Maui’s d3ath is a great example of the expression, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” He meant well with his actions; he just went about it all wrong. I hope Gunther and Penny are okay after witnessing Maui getting, um, chomped at 6:50.

The animation of the Polynesian Goddess of Death was beautiful! Naughty Maui, brave and cunning Maui fell victim to hubris - which does affect deities and not just humans - and paid the price. I want to see more videos about Polynesian mythology as it has fascinated me now

The Polynesian goddess of death is somewhat similar to Persephone in that Maui turned into a worm and Zeus turned into a snake before violating these goddesses in their sleep.

This one got me in the feelings. I rarely hear a myth where the "hero" of humanity is portrayed as both good and bad. I don't think you're supposed to root for Maui 100% even though he did so much good for humanity. It's difficult to tell if he really did care or if he was just an attention-seeking glory hound. Part of this is illustrated by the depiction of the goddesses he wronged weeping together. Sure, he did a lot of cool things, but gods are people too, and Maui never stopped to think about their feelings. Heck, some gods were willing to help him just because he asked! But he burned those bridges. It's a good "respect the gods" myth, but also a good story in the way its characters are humanized and complicated.

When Taranga gave birth to Maui he was a stillbirth, she mourned for him and after cutting off her top knot wrapped Maui in her hair and tossed his body in the ocean. The magic or Mauri of the ocean, along with the chants from the Gods in the heavens brought life back to the stillborn child. It's said that he was breastfed from a whale and was weaned off breastmilk by eating Karengo (Seaweed) and Ngutungutukākā (Sea cucumbers) He was reared by the seabirds and other animals of the sea until an old man called Hape was said to have found Maui on a beach and raised him until he was older. Eventually he went off and found his mother with her other sons all who were named Maui. They were Maui Mua, Maui Pae, Maui Waho and others I can't remember. The Maui you spoke of was Maui Tikitiki ā Taranga or Maui who was wrapped in Tarangas top knot. Most Maori people in New Zealand (Myself included) are descended from Taranga. Just a side note, Hinenuitepō you only mispronounced the last two syllables, the proper pronunciation is "Teh Paw" the E in Polynesian is pronounced like the E in the word "End" or "Ear" the O is pronounced like the O in Oar or Orphan. If a vowel has a Macron over the top it's stretched out A as in the U sound in "Thud" Ā is pronounced as in the A in the word "Art" etc. Hinenuitepō was born from the first human who was named Hineahuone (Women made from dirt) Tānē Māhuta or the god of the forest had made her from the red dirt at Kurawaka and breathed life through her nostrils. They later married and gave birth to Hinetitama. She grew up not knowing her father and she herself also married Tānē Māhuta and bore him children ( the ancestors of mankind) One day she asked Tānē if he knew who her father was, he spoke using an Idiom saying "Ask the pillars of this house who your father is" pretty much saying well there was only one male around, who do you think you think he is? She grew distraught from the shame and threw herself into a dark hole that descended to the underworld or Rarohenga this sealing mankind's fate and mortality. She told Tānē Māhuta that she would stay there and embrace their descendants when they die. If a certain tribe suffers many deaths at one time one of the orators normally exclaims "Āwhea anō ka ngata tōnā hiakai? Tokohia ka kaingia te whenua I te tangata nā te ruakōiwi?" Which roughly translates to a "Aue, shan't her hunger ever be quenched? When will our ancestor have had her fill? The ground swallows our people in burial yet she remains ever so hungry"

Ahhh, I remember reading Maori myths and legends all the time. Especially Maui stealing the fire one. The one that was my favourite was "I te Timatanga" "In the beginning"

It's the job of the older siblings to provide social stability, it's the job of the youngest to challenge the status quo and break everything (which is why Māui is the youngest). Both stability and innovation are essential for success. The 'fish hook' is actually a jawbone; the upper/lower jaws are metaphors for particular types of knowledge. As the younger son, Māui is entitled to 'lower jaw' knowledge, i.e. terrestrial things (seasons, fire, land, navigation). It's only when he tries to control the spiritual world (which is the domain of eldest child) and does so by violating a woman (life, death and creation being women's domain) that he meets his end.

Maui is what my family would call a Fotknocker(the way they say fart). It’s essentially a mischievous child with good intentions but usually makes a situation worse.

'MAUI" sounds like the character "PROMETHEUS." I always wonder where these tales come from and if given so many similarities it's merely one inspired the other or both are loosely based on something our species has long forgotten the realistic version of. Either way, fun to hear.

Actually one fun tidbit is that (maybe instead of a penguin) one of the birds is a Piwakawaka (New Zealand fantail) The fantail was the first to laugh- and loudly. It's because of their bulbous eyes and erratic flight movements resemble Maui's deadly struggle. In New Zealand today, a Maori superstition is that a fantail flying inside your home is an omen of someone close to you is about to die.

Now, why would he want to do his great aunt like that lol? Great video Jon :).
