It is used to assess the appearance change due to foot traffic. The result determines the carpet use class (domestic or commercial) and the use intensity within each class.
The test is conducted in the Vetterman drum. The inside of the drum is lined with carpet samples. The drum rotates, allowing a steel ball with 14 rubber caps to freely roll over the carpet. After 5000 rotations - simulating the actual use over several months - and 20000 rotations - corresponding to the use over several years - the carpet samples are visually assessed by at least three people. They score the wear and color change on a scale of 1 to 5. A score of 1 is considered negative, corresponding to a very strong appearance change. A score of 5 is positive, meaning the appearance hasn’t changed in comparison to the original sample.
