I was binge-watching a bunch of your older videos last night and it was such a relaxing experience. They're so entertaining and honestly they remind me of my childhood when my cousin and I would spend hours and hours on our grandparents' old Windows 95/98 computer in the downstairs den. Your videos recapture that feeling of just talking and chilling with an old friend. Thanks for the great content, Michael!

Hi!! I’m a professional photographer and i think the reason the original owner had the film in it because we tend to put whatever camera we’re using in the same bag :) My camera bag sometimes has my DSLR, my film camera, and my polaroid all at the same time, with lenses, and film lol, which im sure you’ve figured out or do yourself anyways and probably didnt need it explained haha

I'm so glad you got a good unit! Looks like it could just use a head cleaning. Make sure you're recording in "SP" mode too for the best picture and sound. I've had 4 of these 90's era Panasonic Palmcorders over the last 5 or 6 years. Unfortunately, every unit I bought was littered with dead/stuck pixels in the sensor.

Probably some capacitor replacements necessary. I did it to my two Super Nintendo's as well as all my game cartridges, just to be safe. Took a while to replace those old capacitors, but it was well worth it imo.

Yes another Palmcorder owner ! I own four or five of them myself ; one being of the Quasar branding. I used to do videos on my channel with them when I first started out. You could get some really nice footage with them with the proper capturing methods. Some of them had better microphones than others I noticed. It seemed the older models had a better mic. Mine thankfully only have maybe only one or two dead pixels. They seem to be mreo common with VHS-C camcorders compacted to 8mm. Mini DV I've noticed some dead pixels on too. Anyway, neat to see another Palmcorder user. Ciao !

@@Der_Kleine_Mann Replacing capacitors for no reason is just a way for the average person to damage their PCB. Don't replace capacitors unless they are clearly bulging/leaky or you have a way to actually test them. Recapping just for the sake of recapping is this horrible trend that has taken over. It seems to be like the one thing every amateur video game collector/camera collector/electronics enthusiast repeats like a mantra. "Oh, you just need to replace the caps, that'll fix it." Just awful, awful advice. Especially on good quality printed circuit boards, you're way more likely to damage the pads and/or lift traces trying to replace the caps than just leaving them alone. If you know for a fact a capacitor needs to be replaced, then get the proper equipment to do it (which means getting a hot air gun or hotplate for pre-heating, and then a vacuum desoldering station... you *can* use solder braid but you need a really good quality iron, good quality flux, and you need to actually know how to use braid which it seems about 50% of solderers don't).

I found a complete video kit for just $10 at a Church sale years ago. The sad thing is is that several personal family videos were left behind inside the carry case too. It makes me wonder what happened to the family that were in the videos. There was a man, his wife ,and their young teenage son and daughter in the videos that were made in 1986-87 as well as their home. If only there was a last name given I would have loved to return the videos to them. It makes me somewhat depressed as I hope that they are OK and not dead. That would explain why the videos were left behind and probably gotten at an estate sale somewhere. 🤔😕

Damn we had the earlier version of this growing up (after we had the RCA one that needed to be attached to the VCR to record). B&W Viewfinder, but otherwise very similar. I thought the compact cassettes were so damn cool, and how you put it in the adapter thing and the motors pull the tape in and everything..so cool. Especially coming from the old RCA... you literally needed to put the tape recording section in a backpack or use a shoulder strap with the camera tethered to it. I don't think yours is recording ideally, the line at the bottom and the funky audio isn't quite normal. I mean, it is almost 30 years old so makes sense

I used VHS-C on my channel for a bit. I actually have quite a few Panasonics just like yours. I always hated how bad the audio was on some of them. Yours has better audio compared to the four I own LOL. Using a 500 or 600 pound fishing magnet will erase any tapes you have. So If you don't want to record over a tape, you could completely erase them when you need to. You just rub the magent around all the sides of the tape a few times and it will all be gone. A trick of the trade I learned from having limited tapes for a while starting out. I will say, I like VHS-C for how easy it is to put into a VCR or to capture, but 8mm tapes look better and have double the run time. I'd also recommend cleaning your tape head on that camcorder. It looked like it was struggling a little bit when you played back that recording you made. There's plenty of videos on how to clean heads and you may even already know, so I'll save you the time reading. Anyway, enjoy your next camera ! You can get some really good looking video with them.

May want to give that camera a good head cleaning. For most of the parts you can use cotton swab but for the head drum don't use cotton swab as those can damage the heads. From what I've read you can use a piece of clean paper soaked in iso. Of coarse I suppose you could not clean if if you like that dirty heads VHS look. But perhaps clean the non moving parts which might improve the audio quality at least. (though if it supports Hi-Fi, then audio comes off the video drum too so you'd have to clean it anyways) Taking it apart and replacing the belts might also be something worth considering. Though I own a full size VHS camcorder and mine doesn't use belts and the VHS mech is built like a tank so not something I'll have to worry about. (the trade off is that it's got tons of SMD mounted caps that will need replacing. :( ) So maybe you are lucky and got one that doesn't use SMD caps AND doesn't use belts. If it's a mid 90's camera it might have SMD caps...Hopefully not though since all SMD caps I've seen from that era are starting to leak now. :(

The audio, honestly, sounded like you had recorded in SLP or maybe, since the tracking was also off, that the audio track portion of the tape was damaged? I'd check that adapter, too, to make sure everything is aligning correctly. On the other hand, I've never used VHS-c, only full-sized VHS, but that stereo mic suggests better audio quality than what we are hearing. Maybe that's why they stopped using the camcorder. 🙂

I wonder if the people that you got that from knew it had a tape and what was on the tape. For all we know a family member in that footage had since died and they may appreciate having a copy on a modern platform.
