Derek Bieri from Vice Grip Garage bought a 1928 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan and drove it home. But he had nothing but trouble along the way. Derek couldn’t have found a better person to help him with his car on that long journey. The quality of replacement parts these days is appalling, which is ironic considering the simplicity of design. Ignition parts such as condensers, points and spark plugs are some of the really well known offenders. I love that care pack you put together for him at the end. Talk about a great gift!!
@ModelA

Thanks! Yep, you're right. There's a reason for that care pack, but I'm not allowed to say anything yet.

Paul, another great video. Great explanation on on the condensers. ~60+ years ago in high school auto shop we learned how to test condensers. Another quick way the teacher showed us using a cheapy ohm meter is to connect the meter leads one way (+, -) and then switch them (-, +) and watch the needle move. If no movement, bad condenser. Of course, as young degens we quickly found out how much fun it was to "charge" a condenser, then hand it to someone. Haha. Have a great day and stay cool.

Nicely done Sir. My first car at 16 was a '28 Tudor. Matchbook cover to set points. Spare belt Water Pump to crank when the Generator turned red hot due to Cut Out defects. Rubber smell was first indication. We used to leave charged condensers on the Garage office countertop for Fiddlers!

I bought a Model A distributor off of eBay not to long ago. Seller said there were some new parts. In any case just something to tinker with. One thing I did notice was the opening for the oil in the body behind the oiler cavity was plugged. Pulled the oiler and shoved a paper clip end in. Kept poking at the crud until a glop of old crusty crud came out. Hardened oil. Lower plate wire was stiff wire. Need to get some of the good copper wire you talked about.

@ModelA

It wouldn't make any difference. The spark would still be exactly the same because for 12 volts, you have to run a resistor in series with the coil primary.

Paul,I already have a car in mind to save. Been sitting in a dry California garage for 30+ years. 90% intact. Was bought as a street rod project(*shudder*)that never got off the ground. If it was just a body and some frame rails it wouldn't bother me. But when something has made it this long and is almost completely intact I believe it should be restored,not cut up. I'll be seeing the owner this weekend and going to discuss its possible sale.
