The biggest problem with the free market is the idiocy of the particpants who continue to reward bad companies for bad practices and bad games.
@Jormungrandrserpent
@Jormungrandrserpent 2 ай бұрын
free market is not a thing because of Capitalism, its a product of basic economics. Capitalism actually works against the notion of competition and the free market, forming Monopolies and Trusts like Microsoft. It takes institutions like the FCC and government regulation to prevent monopolies from dominating the market. Capitalist ideals reward wealth at all costs, which is why you see big corporations doing crappy business practices; They payout from Stockholders is huge.
@Tommylop1982
@Tommylop1982 2 ай бұрын
Actually the op opposite, under a capitalist system I can start a game company and start producing games as long as I have the capital. Those institutions you just listed, make it harder for new competition to come in and keep those big guys in business.
@theogonia1983
@theogonia1983 2 ай бұрын
@@Tommylop1982 and those companies and the monopolies/trusts they inevitably form are prime examples of the problem of capitalism. Markets are themselves creations of government, regulations, rules and laws form a marketplace and have done so since ancient times. Look up how an oligopoly works, which is technically what we have with the handful of gaming giants. There dominate the marketplace - if you start up a company and start seeing success you’ll either get offered a buyout deal, or be utterly crushed via means that are outside the principles of a free marketplace. When government isn’t captured by capitalists and works as intended, it is sufficient to keep this problem at bay
@Tommylop1982
@Tommylop1982 2 ай бұрын
@@theogonia1983 all there needs to be a market place is two people willing to trade. Big government rules and relegations often times stifle the market and create the monopolies. If you want less big corporations then you need smaller government.

Low budget and indie games are now better than most AAA-games today, bigger companies' game budgets had swollen to ridicilous sizes and yet they launch games mostly totally broken. Futhermore they tried to milk more and more money from people's pockets with several ways by doing less work. People just got fed of it and voted with their wallets. This is the results! And I am happy! This could finally be the start of change for better.

Fortnite is free to play. The other devs want to charge $50-$70 and then skins and battle passes on top. If they’re going to go games as a service, drop the holding charge and put the time into the limited time events within the game to draw attention to the game and sell skins with licensing deals. The upfront charge on a games as a service title deters consumers like me from purchasing titles. I’m sure I’m not the only one, but they see the cod success and they decide to still charge for the game. These new IP’s don’t come with a solid fan base out of the gate. It’s earned over time.

It just goes to show how much personality was showcased in gaming up to the eighth generation. Some of my favourite video games Super Metroid and Jet Force Gemini were developed by passionate teams that truly loved what they did to deliver a product not just to make a profit by copying others and charging micro-transactions but to tell a great story and deliver unique gameplay experiences. Both of these games had average sales but I can’t stress enough the development of these games have so much love put into them that it upsets me seeing the gaming industry is now turning towards another crash over 40 years later. It’s nothing but money money money! Layoffs, micro-transactions, photorealistic graphics that will just age in a few years and absurd price tags that will also eventually fall.

The answer is sticking to a budget on game development. AA games are being more successful than some AAA games, and there's ways to make games with art styles that will still look good without needing them to look hyper-realistic. Look at Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild. Those games will still look beautiful 10 years from now. I think it's part of the reason why Fortnite is so successful. I wouldn't describe our economy as capitalist. I don't know what you'd call it, but it's not capitalism when everything is owned by 4 or 5 companies. You could argue this is the end result of capitalism, but really it's just failure to properly maintain the system without letting too much wealth gather in 1 place. This is where inflation and calls for communism originate from in America, failure to properly maintain capitalism and letting it deteriorate into what we have now

Capitalism literally started out with a bunch of monopolies in the 19th century. Monopolies that had to be broken up by GOVERNMENT. And guess what? Over time big money interests have been hacking away at these policies designed to keep them in check, by buying politicians and rigging the game against the common people.
@lllULTIMATEMASTERlll
@lllULTIMATEMASTERlll 2 ай бұрын
But “properly maintaining” capitalism is regulation, which is antithetical to pure capitalism. We live in a mixed economy. We have government interfere in situations when we don’t like the results. If you let companies do whatever they want besides violate rights (they still do this), you will inevitably get monopolies. It’s capitalism with government intervention, which is a mixed economy. But it absolutely makes sense to call it capitalism. Otherwise, the word doesn’t really mean anything because then NO country would be capitalist if your definition is that it must be 100% pure free market. The US is a capitalist country for all intents and purposes.
@IsmailofeRegime
@IsmailofeRegime 2 ай бұрын
Why isn't "letting too much wealth gather in 1 place" capitalism? You still have people being obliged to work for wages on behalf of owners of the means of production, producing commodities for the market. Whether these wage-workers are hired by a small business or a multinational corporation doesn't change that. You can argue that capital accumulation resulting in the creation of monopolies is terrible for the quality of products and whatnot (not to speak of humanity), but it would still be the result of capitalist production.

I miss the 360 era so much. It was peak gaming. Gaming needs a revolution. Games utilized gameplay mechanics that have proven to be timeless. Devs were like, It's a game, will get right to the point & focus on doing what u want really well. Modern Console libraries are lacking selection & quality so much. Devs should never stop taking inspiration from previous game gens. Timeless games don't need hyper realistic graphics. Some of the best games have unique art styles. Anytime i say this someone in the comments always says: "umm well we have indie games" but my point is we need these kind of game selection on CONSOLES as well. PC's have steam & tons of access to a unique library of creative projects. Look at the Game Library of the most recent game consoles? Now look at previous generation consoles? There's no competition. It's not even close to the PS2, N64, PS1, Xbox, GameCube, Dreamcast, 360, PS3, etc. If game devs & game companies realize they are wasting such insane amounts of $ & time to make a game that still runs so terribly (no matter if u have the best PC possible. Which proves it's how these games were made. Not the tech hardware needing a upgrade. I bet we haven't even come close to pushing modern hardware to it's limits yet) *So if devs & companies can see the benefit of them taking inspiration from previous game generation designs, they might realize it wouldn't take so long to make a game, it wouldn't cost so much money to make EACH GAME. Give these things a chance to prove they are capable of being timeless. Hopefully we see a resurgence of pure nerdy passion & focus from devs if they are allowed to just focus on smaller passion projects. Especially with today's technological advancements. Previous games should still inspire newer games no matter how far into the future we go. We shouldn't leave those unique aspects of gaming universe in the past. Hopefully the struggles of the modern day triple AAA games will organically shift change back towards a better direction. I just worry about the gaming industry being at a certain point where people who are severely out of touch with the core gaming community are the ones that are making the most decisions and forcing devs to do things they completely don't want to do because they know it's a bad idea.. I wish we didn't have so many game companies get bought out. I miss when a game was a project worked on by a group of passionate people who decided they wanted to create this passion project.. Now it's like a popular underground band getting bought out by a mega Corp and now they have full say in the way they play music and when they play music and what they say in their music.. I hope gaming snaps out of this dark chapter and they find their roots they left in the wake of the Y2K era..

Also when they buy a game studio everyone gets laid-off for the ceos, that is such a bad business modal, especially for game studios. Also they keep hiring people who dont have a clue in what they are doingl. Also they hate their own consumer base.

I've been saying for a long time Rich if either employees or customers don't like the way a company is behaving, start buying shares. Remember when retail investors stuck it to pros with GameStop? Maybe do the same thing to SONY or Microsoft; sure they have a lot more shares, but it certainly would put the bean counters on notice.

I think developers are afraid AI will take over game development. So publishers and developers are laying people off to cut costs. Also, modders are getting better at cracking into giving them better graphics and assets.

I'm a software engineer, and a lot of experienced developers aren't worried about AI taking over their jobs in the near future. ChatGPT and other AI tools are basically used as a quicker Stackoverflow (a website where people ask questions on how to code things). AI seems to have slightly reduced the demand for junior devs I will say.

With this Industry it is really weird ,especially when the economy isn't the best for a lot of people who buy their games .I know that I watch to see what kind of B.S. is going on with it always online, micro transactions, 155555 GB patches , not getting the full game then they have 500 dlcs 6 months later.I have a Steam account and get some really good deals on entire game serries , free weekends, ect I have enough games that I really do not need to buy anything , that isn't a great game experience . Even with all these newer games coming out with the best graphics ect . I still find myself going back to some older games with great levell design and replay ability . Greed with everyone trying to chase the same pot of gold doesn't help either.

The more game creators (publishers mostly) chase the live service dragon, the more they facilitate the live service model furthering Fortnite's dominance which uses a greedy FOMO live service model that overall hurts the industry and it's killing creativity, fun, originality. I think we're getting there with people choosing INDIE over triple A. But just like with tech. You start getting crazy ideas that are great, being bought up by Microsoft and Sony. Cool Microsoft now owns like 70% of the Major Studios now, Sony owns 20% and then 10% is still in control of those major studios like Ubisoft. I think Ubisoft might legitimately be the last standing AAA studio that hasn't been consumed yet. OH, I'm sorry, all the Japanese ones as well like Bandai Namco, Sega Sammy, Konami, and I'm not including Nintendo since they're also a console manufacturer.
