Stars: Buster Keaton, Anita Louise, Richard Cromwell
Director: Edward F. Cline
In this comedic send-up to classic stage melodramas, a villain by the name of Cribs has set his eyes on the beautiful Mary Wilson. To win her heart, he devises an ingenious, foil-proof plan to bring ruin to the reputation of our hero, Mary's husband, Edward! Watch for the prize scenes with Buster Keaton in the sizable role of the hero's best friend; Also stars Margaret Hamilton, the Wicked Witch from THE WIZARD OF OZ.

This was excellent Alan Mowbray played the villain to perfection it's a shame no one got tied to the railroad tracks. The rest of the cast performed brilliantly nice to see Buster Keaton in a talking role will be recommending this to friends thanks for posting.

Critics got this movie wrong. It's wildly overacted on purpose by a veteran cast. Keaton of course comes off best. Thanks PizzaFlix for posting this rare gem.

This is the kind of satire of outmoded theatrical styles of melodrama that Buster broke into movies with in the early 1920's. That may explain his attraction to it but it doesn't explain why anybody felt it needed to be done in 1940.

@@mickarran4683 Perhaps, it reflected Keaton's feelings about the end of the prohibition of alcohol in 1933, or maybe he just loved the play "The Drunkard" and wanted to put it on film. I think this is a great movie. There are way more idiotic movies and remakes today that deserve negative criticism than this.

There are messages in this film. I’ve never seen a movie like this, melodrama on screen. I’ve heard of Buster Keaton but have never seen him. This is a very witty, funny movie. Very difficult lines to memorize.

OMG, what a great satirical movie. Wouldn't be surprised if Mel Brooks developed a few screen plot schematics after watching this...by halfway through, it's classic for later Mel Brooks style, and a bit further, classic for The Three Stooges (specifically 'pie throwing' scene). The subtle-to-obtuse comedic ploys, including slapstick and old-style live theatrical, works (more than) well, integrating vaudeville with (1940s) more current film techniques. All around great movie.

And GREAT to see Margaret Hamilton in a role that allowed her to show actual (although sarcastic/comedic parody of the 'saintly mother') acting chops outside of her usual typecasting of a nasty protagonist. Who knew - Margaret Hamilton had a lovely singing voice!?

This is a melodrama... designed to be overacted and overplayed. If anyone remembers a Samuel French play called "Saving The Old Homestead", that too was designed to be played melodramatically and with lots of character. I played the hero "Rodger" in our HS version of this. "I'll save you little Nell"!!!

Richard Cromwell in this one, reminds me of the "actors" in the Gerry Anderson Supermarionation sci-fi kiddie shows of the 1960's, like Captain Scarlet. He's doing it on purpose, of course, in the spirit of the film.

Fourth billing for Buster? Hollywood sure knows how to screw with people's lives!!! Oddly enough is was very amusing but there is more of a message than one might think. Knowing that Buster got very depressed after Hollywood would not let Buster make the kind of movies he wanted to make , and a wife gold digger he had two sons with that took his sons away from him and changed their last names, he would only have to take 2 drinks and be completely drunk. They put him in a sanatorium for a little while but he did get better and got out. In the sanatorium they would give you more to drink like in this movie and many people died because of this. Boy did they get that one wrong. Buster was one of the lucky ones.

Silly thing. Couldn't even watch it all. I wonder how/why the great Buster Keaton ever was compelled to do this. And down on the cast list, no less. He was right up there with and I believe better than Chaplin.
