Life was so great when we could hear music like this on the radio and it was an everyday occurrence. We just didn't know how good we had it back then. Thank you for spotlighting where Jay holds the sustaining note and then follows it up with more singing. I always thought that was one of the defining moments of rock and roll. To me it was even more impressive then the high notes he was hitting.

@Mark Ehrlich Cool that you went to those Fox shows-I was a little too young for Murray The K shows but I do have a few airchecks.Yep I know Jay was on those Mystics tunes Sad that he passed my friend Kurt took his place.I actually had some Slim airchecks that had songs it took years to figure out what they were.I got the tapes from John Greco another good guy.I'm familiar with Downstairs Records but only in the 70's I would go there occasionally.I was a member of UGHA for years sadly Ronnie I passed.Of all the great jocks I think Jocko was the coolest. It was pretty great growing up on N.Y.radio.In the 70's I'd occasionally go to Cape Records my friend Steve worked there and oh geez I forget the name I think Stein Brothers in Brighton Beach. Also some of the oldies stores in the Village.BTW love The Timetones record and yes I'm familiar with the Earth Angels.

He cuts off on the line ending in “time” before the original recording , which is fine as he was older. But that shows how great he was when he was younger. He used to flow the High Notes straight into the regular notes. He was the best at that. He didn’t need a break like he did in this video.

I was hoping you'd do a bit on Jay, such a strong contributor to the cantor chorus as a youth and a major artist in the 60's. As you mentioned, classically trained, and also fluent in Yiddish. I did sound in the 60's, I witnessed him giving very memorable live performances that sometimes turned a routine 1-hour show into 2-2.5 hours, the audiences simply couldn't get enough. Handling logistics when shows were extended became a serious challenge, but few complained because of the quality of the performances. A pleasure to work with, and knowing him was a gift. RIP David ...

I’ve always loved Jay Black 😄♥️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ so sorry to hear of his passing. Thank you for doing this analysis of his singing. I was watching you as Jay was singing and it was so precious to see you so intently listening and smiling and appreciating him, from musician to musician, that camaraderie and that attention, I was just mesmerized by your gracious listening to Mr. black, when you yourself are such a tremendous musician. It just shows what a beautiful person you are and such an excellent musician as well. Thank you very much for being you!! My best to you this day and every day forward 👍🤗⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎵🎶🎶🎵🎶

I saw Jay and the Americans play with a little known band (Huey Lewis and the News) back in 1982. Jay commanded the stage while Huey kept trying to get people to come closer to the stage…Jay was amazing.

He had a God given talent that few singers have. Roy Orbison is one. His voice and personality will be missed. He is certainly in "Rock and Roll Heaven"!!

Hi Fil. Another great and complete vocal analysis by you. Jay certainly was a powerful singer who had a lengthy career with many delightful hit songs. We will always have the music he left for future generations to enjoy, cheers.

Great voice, great number , RIP , Jay , you just had to be alive back then , the music , the cars , America was still reeling from the greatness of the 1950's , people had higher moral standards .

Oh my word!! I compared this rendition to the 1960s version and I agree with you. Fil, I believe more recent one was better. Bravo! .

Well,I didn't see this one coming...A very under-rated vocalist,Jay provided so many great vocal performances with Jay and The Americans, and "Cara Mia" certainly didn't disappoint. He should always be thought of in the same light as Bobby Hatfield and Lou Christie, even Paul Da Vinci, who could all produce these impressive vocal histrionics - a great upload dude, and so sad to hear about Jays passing.

This has always been my favorite song by Jay and the Americans. I have seen some other videos here, one shows past and present and one where he is around 70. His voice just got better and better. RIP Jay you will not be forgotten
