Y'all nailed it with luffy not necessarily "needing" to know whats wrong to do something about it. The end of ep 37 is literally him asking who arlong is because Luffy hasn't even met Arlong yet in this arc! idk its funny and somehow a solid story point at the same time

Just to clarify one small thing because you wondered how long they were in the Grand Line but it's not like Krieg where he went and got bodied. The Fishmen we're born and raised in the Grand Line, it's more of a matter of when they decided to leave than how long they survived. They're right at home in the GL.

Nami's breakdown, luffy stopping her ,her trying to push him away,him just standing there waiting for the word,her finally late her absolute lowest finally asking "luffy help me". Him giving her the straw hat ,and her realizing why that's a big deal,the gang posted up waiting for the word,the walk,the speech from those two of all people. This entire sequence just hooked me . One of the greatest moments in anime history in my opinion. Nothing has reached this level of emotion,Scale ,tension and hype in this series before or after this moment so far from where I'm at ,just wow. I am just in love with Nami from this arc like I already liked her but after this she just became one of my favorite female characters in all fiction. Just wow man But more importantly You gotta feel sorry for momoo my man did nothing wrong .

Episode 37 the walk to arlong park for me has always been the true start of the straw hat pirates, for the first time they're not just a ragtag bunch of people, for the first time they are truly a pirate crew.

The music during walk to arlong park is called 'Overtaken'. It is one of the best tracks along with 'to the grandline' and 'very very strongest'. When this plays, you knows shit is about to go down.

Yup Luffy is a unique shonan anime protag. Usually the hero would just charge in no questions asked but Luffy won't get involved until he's asked too get involved

Love your reactions like usual. To me the series really picks up at the start of the next saga, but yeah the Walk to Arlong episode is still 1 of the series top iconic scenes even to this day

@@tomw4955I mean I wouldn't really call this a retcon, spoilers for around the timeskip . Arlong and Jimbei were both crewmates on Fisher Tiger's crew so as far as a random civilian is concerned being crewmates on such a great crew means you should be equal, we know there's a massive gap but how is anyone else supposed to know? This is just an unreliable source of information as I highly doubt even way back then Oda planned on making Jimbei Arlong's equal

The stakes and scope of Arlong Park are much lower than they become later on in the series, but I think it is such a beloved arc because it is the first real showing of how emotionally poignant and resonant One Piece can be when you strip away the silliness and light-hearted tone. One Piece is probably the single most emotional series I've ever read, which seems strange when you consider it's not a traditional drama anime or a particularly dark and adult one. But Oda has a knack for making you really feel in a way few authors do. Nami's breakdown in this episode is heartbreaking in a way very very very few shounens ever manage to be.

It’s all part of the full experience isn’t it? Remember you’re talking from the perspective of someone who’s seen 100’s of episodes. We don’t hate the character we just have a laugh out of him but when he gets his moment later on (I’m assuming) that’s when it pays off

I always ask my friends who have watched one piece for the first time, and they always say that the episode that got them hooked to One Piece was episode 37, basically if you still don't like One Piece after Arlong Park then you ain't gonna like it at all, but who cares about those people anyway, ONE PIECE FOR LIFE!!!!

Your point about the marines being useless and self-interested is a common theme throughout the series. However, don't feel they're all weak - there are some very strong ones later on, and some very good and moral ones. Including one you'll meet next arc.
