The Wall of Storage: a Backlit Hardware Store at Home

I have a lot of hardware in organizer boxes. Yes, I know I don't need to be a hardware store unto myself; McMaster-Carr ships almost overnight. But when you need 5 of some speciality fastener that comes in a box of 100, what are you going to do? Throw the rest away? Of course not.
Watch as I hang those organizers on the wall, using a custom aluminum frame equipped with LED backlighting! Inspired by / @maxmakerchannel .

Now you just need to make one with addressable zones so you can light up just the area with the parts you are looking for. 😊

Light up the zones of the stuff you have not touched in years. It’d be fun for sure. But the rot scares me. My one or two units have the rot really bad.

@@FearsomeWarrior LOL, I don't need THAT much accountability! As far as the rot goes, yeah, these are pretty cheaply made, but ubiquitous also, so possibly they can be replaced? It's also possible to fix or reinforce them. I've glued some of the seams back together already.

FYI: Those rubber bumpers will most likely leave a black residue mark on the paint. You may want to put something like packing tape as a buffer.

Thank you for the tip! After I take this down I'll have to patch the screw holes and touch up the paint anyway, so I think it's okay.

Good idea but I think I need an intern to maintain the database in that case! Getting this done already triggered a reorganization and consolidation effort. Lots of overlap and inefficiency at the moment. Thank you for your comment!

Nice job. I often use extrusion as a hanging rail similar to a cleat by making a 6mm wedge for the slot, then the frame can sit on the hanging rail

Beautiful, but since you went to so much trouble, you also should have painted them all the same color.
@EikiMartinson
@EikiMartinson Ай бұрын
Thank you but that's a step too far! I acquired them over years of course, but if I were building out a new system I'd get them all at once at the same place and they'd be the same color. By the way, one of them glows significantly warmer than the others because it's the oldest one and the bins are yellowing!

That looks awesome. Maybe the use of a light dispersion layer behind the sorting boxes might help getting even more light through. Now a lot of the light are just illuminating the lights on the other side.

Great video!! Do you happen to have a de-interlacing filter or some sort of motion smoothing on by chance? The motion seems a bit off, and if you slow it down about every other frame has interlacing artifacts

Thank you for your comment, this is just the sort of feedback I need. I shoot everything with my Pixel phone. I import it into a Davinci Resolve project set to 30 fps. But looking at my source files in windows they're reported as 30.08 fps, 30.09 fps, etc. What to do?

Interesting project. Does the lighting actually help you see whats in the boxes, or is it purely decorative ?
@EikiMartinson

I've been reorganizing everything between the three types of organizers you see in the video, and actually it really does help. For instance: some of those drawers can be subdivided once (with a little sliding plastic piece) and other can be subdivided three times; these latter are useful in situations like "4-40 x 1/4" machine screws, of which I may have 4 different types that could all live in one drawer. The lighting helped me quickly scan through the stack looking for that type of drawer so I could allocate them most usefully.

Great ideas! Who makes the dividers that are on the French cleats for the removable plastic trays with lids? Been trying to find something for my stack of those forever.
@EikiMartinson
@EikiMartinson 13 күн бұрын
The steel cases with removable plastic organizers have dividers molded in; those can't be adjusted. They came from McMaster-Carr. Check out my short video about the crimp terminal organizer for an alternative way of increasing the resolution though. For that one I 3D printed some cups to subdivide the spaces in a fixed tackle box. Thanks for the comment!

They ARE neat, aren't they? @SteveRobillard and I were discussing those in the comments here. Unfortunately neither of us could find more of them. I can say that the black and orange ones are Black & Decker, and the gray ones are "WorkForce" branded, but molded into the back it says "Rimax" and "Made in Columbia". Good luck and post a comment if you find them anywhere!

I also got those from Home Depot but I think possibly from another store as well. They're obviously all made by the same company but they're branded differently; the black and orange ones are Black and Decker for instance. It's been a long time since I bought one though. Good luck!
