00:00 No Spoilers
11:05 SPOILERS BEWARE
This is my rave review, both no spoilers and spoilers for The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu, book two in the Dandelion Dynasty! Ken Liu The Wall of Storms is book 2 in The Dandelion Dynasty series which is an epic fantasy that I think holds its own against decades worth of amazing works.. The Wall of Storms is an EXCELLENT second entry to a series and I have to say that Ken Liu is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

Ok I love this video times a million. You’re so good at articulating why this book is so amazing. My favorite parts: “The sense of dread I had…” “Jia was starting to piss me off” “It wasn’t. Kuni is dead. And it sucks” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I loved the parallels between Gin/Luan and Zomi/Thera. It made it so impactful. I bet we could talk hours about Jia. She’s such a complicated character and I always wonder how she goes from one of my favs in GoK to just someone I hate in WoS. Finally nobody gives Timu the love he deserves. I know he’s sort of annoying but what happens to him is sooo dark. You have all this stuff about men not being “able” to be abused and then he gets gaslit into thinking everything is his fault and it’s just soooo sad 😭😭😭

So glad the book landed with you- I'm only six minutes in but I agree so much already. You definitely have a way of hyping/explaining what makes Liu's series so damn good and I'm really stoked that so many people are responding to your enthusiasm. Wall of Storms is one of the best books I've ever read and in particular that ending sequence is one of the best ending battles I've ever come across. Really pumped you included a spoiler section because I don't feel like I ever see spoiler reviews for this book! I'll check it out later today.

The step up from Grace of Kings to Wall of Storms was so cool to see. I love the way Liu established in the shorter first book what became the mythic backdrop of what seems to be the story he originally meant to focus on. I've never really seen it done like that before. I just finished Veiled Throne a few days ago and could not believe he managed to hold the level of Wall of Storms. Can't wait for Speaking Bones to come out.

@@thefantasynuttwork Yup. By the way, I felt like Erikson and his focus on compassion as a theme really helped me not just hate Jia but try to understand her to an extent as well. I still massively dislike her but I think I can appreciate that she is trying to help "the people of Dara" and believes that the Grace of Kings means being a horrible person doing horrible stuff is okay as long as you don't enjoy it and delude yourself into not doing it for your own pleasure. Liu explores that further in the next book. Without Erikson and his morally nuanced characters, I might just have written her off as another schemestress in Fantasy. That is not to say I don't hope she dies a violent death :D

@@thefantasynuttwork Okay so I just wanted to pop back in here and let you know that I ended up adoring this book!! I 100% aree with everthing you said in the spoiler section. Ugh, why was this SO good?! I really admire Ken Liu for some of his creative choices, because this book ended up feeling so different from everything else I've ever read and that can honestly be a big risk to take as an author. It worked out wonderfully imo, but I think it really helped that I just let myself sit back and enjoy this wild ride, wherever Ken Liu wanted to take it. I love your enthusiasm and I do agree, in Wall of Storms you follow the characters much closer than in the Grace of Kings. More than anything I loved the characters. I loved the scholar perspective of Zomi, I love how Liu tells the story with having a complete 'short story' about the characters' past. Jia was great in Grace of Kings but she is absolutely amazing in the second book. I think Ken Liu is one of the best authors at this point in terms of writing realistic (female) characters. SPOILERSSS (more or less) Even though Jia did things that frustrated me SO MUCH, it was believable. Same for Timu. Damn I was annoyed by his decisions but when you think about it, this is true to his character and how he grew up, and Kuni might be to blame for at least some of that. Thera becoming the heir is something I didn't see coming. It's great to see how, even though most of the scheming is known to us as the reader before it actually happens, getting to know the scheme is just as intense.

It is interesting, I absolutely loved the book, part 3 and after is just mindblowing, I couldn't put the book down. At the same time I feel because of the narrative no one is a main hero and I find myself not caring about almost anyone, in a sense that I care about people let's say in ASOIAF, but just rooting for everyone who's on page right now and thinking "Well, I hope this turns out great". This book also had so many secondary characters that I didn't even know who they are and what is they purpose, and yet still because of the narrative it worked to have battles with them and I did care about the battles themselves... Am I even making sense? Idk. I feel like characters are hidden behind the narrative choice and I cannot care about them the way I do in character-driven books, but I do care about the world and the story a lot and am willing to read whatever names Ken throws on the page because I am lost in his generals and nobles anyway, lol. Something like that. That second half of the book though, man, what a blast

@@thefantasynuttwork listening to your spoiler section now. Indeed, all those moments are amazing. SOME SPOILERS BELOW: That twist at the end of first negotiations with barbarians was so OMG, but also Zato was a total bafoon in that scene, have no idea how he did not see that coming. All those other character moments you discuss are amazing indeed. Does that mean that I am actually connected with the characters? I don't know, I am confused by the choice of narrative in this book. I almost wish that the first book was a trilogy of books written in the style of ASOIAF, and the second book could be 2 books written in that style - meaning without third person omniscient, so that we follow all the characters closely and everything is fleshed out. At the same time, this series is over in July, and I am still waiting for ASOIAF, so maybe there's some merit in third person omniscient. However it might be, this book was absolutely glorious (though I did not like part 2 with SPOILER fake rebellion - that part got on my nerves, it was too much of third person omniscient with very uninteresting storyline that felt like a recycling of first book ideas. Fortunately those barbarians arrived....)

Great video! I just finished it myself and dang was that good WoS Spoilers below . . Jia is absolutely an amazing villain. The whole scheme in the end with Jia trying to make Risanna kill herself was horrible and amazing writing. It solidified the dislike I have for Jia completely. I am really looking forward to seeing how she evolves in the next book. Kuni's death was so sad, him being one of my favorite characters of all time. I did have some gripes with his death that are kinda echoed throughout the book to a certain extent. I feel like there's more and more conveniences/contrivances as the series goes on. For instance, with Kuni's death, Kuni, a near invalid due to a festering wound in his leg, manages to lunge for a speaking tube and give a five minute speech motivating his people and declaring Thera Empress. I feel like he should've been cut off by guards at some point. And this happens a lot, like with the whale that gave the Dandelion Dynasty the garafin eggs, and Luan and Oga being the *only* survivors of that giant wreck. IT's just enough to give me pause at random moments. At the same time, Ken Liu leans into this with the gods, which is why its not as annoying or frustrating as it is in other books (looking at you, Terry Goodkind). I also love the god's dialogue throughout all this. Once I figured out that there were other lands, my first question was about the nature of the gods, and if they exist on other continents. I suspect that the Turtle god's journey (the one who became a mortal) will tell us more next book.

YEEESSSS. Grace of Kings was great, but Wall of Storms is on a whole nother level, and I CANNOT wait for you to read The Veiled Throne because imo it's even better. The innovation in Wall of Storms was definitely one of my favorite things. It was there in Grace of Kings, but I think we see it even more in book 2. Every time they're faced with a problem, I am just so, so excited to see how they solve it. Whether it's a new invention or just a creative use of things already in play or even simply outwitting someone else.... it's all so good! To the point where it even excited me when it was the "bad guys" getting one over on the heroes. Okay, WoS spoilers below.... > > > The Liukio (no idea on the spelling...) are just so, sooooo good. When I say I sometimes root for the bad guys in these books, they're exactly what I mean. Like, when you see how the Darans interact with them and the assumptions they make about them being "barbarians" and stupid. There's a part of me that kind of cheers whenever they win. At least, when they aren't murdering innocents.... Zomi is so perfect. She has a level of almost naivety to her? Or rather idealism. And it's great seeing her grow and become grounded while not quite giving up her ideals. She's one of my favorite characters I've read this year, although I MIGHT like Thera more just because there's something more relatable about her to me. Timu 😖 You didn't get to her much outside asides, but I'm really curious about your thoughts on Jia. I felt like she was really out of character in this book, but it's very possible that I was misremembering her from GoK because it had been so long between the books. Did you find that her character made sense for her? I mean, her actions make sense and things, but I specifically mean does it connect for you that the Jia in Grace of Kings would become this Jia?

Agreed with all of the above! I think Jia had such a different tone in this book than GoK but I then thought more about it and came to the conclusion her character arc makes a lot of sense. She was always duty before all else, and now in WoS she is in power (or at least some what in power). She was willing to be a hostage for Dara and Kuni so it's not too surprising she's willing to also put others through terrible stuff for the "good of Dara". She's definitely vile imo but I think she's probably one of the more complex characters I've read. Loved your comment btw

@@thefantasynuttwork Yeah, when you put it like that, it makes sense. She was always very practical. In fact, her pushing Kuni to take a second wife is a perfect example of the kind of duty-bound actions that happen in WoS. And definitely such a complex character! I hate her, but I also understand why she does what she does. And in a way, I respect her.

@@AnotherTurning yeah and I still have empathy for her character because she's been through a lot. Risana and her though made me firmly in the camp of anti Jia 😭

The veiled throne being better is quite a take, don't think I've seen that one yet haha! I mean I still loved it but the half a book thing really affected it for me. I thought Jia's actions made perfect sense to the character she was in the first book but you have to really try to see her perspective to get where she's coming from haha. She's certainly very jarring though, and upset me so much haha. Also great thoughts! I also really love Thera.

@@readbykyle3082 I just really, really loved the balance of tone Liu got in The Veiled Throne. Wall of Storms is great, but it got a little overly bleak for me at times. I felt very worn down. I think he lightens it up a little in TVT without sacreficing the impact. And some of the new characters were so endearing and delightful for me.

I think this might be my book of the year. Wall of Storms outdid Grace of Kings in every conceivable way for me and GoK was one of my favourite reads of the year until now, despite my lukewarm stance on 3rd person omniscient. I'm gutted because Liu killed off 3 of my favourite characters in the series in 1 book. Gin Mazoti. Luan Zya. Kuni Garu. Especially Gin. Jia is a fantastically written character but she terrifies me and I hate her as a person. She's a utilitarian that's actually in charge... 💀 Tenryo might be the best villain I've read all year. Which isn't saying much cuz the only other villains I remember from this year are Anton Chigurh and The Judge.

@@thefantasynuttwork y'know how it is, I finally got my currently reading Fantasy list done to one and i love being able to laser focus and binge. After Dresden Files it'll be Memory Sorrow & Thorn then Dark Tower and finally my long awaited ASOIAF re-read. After that it's a free for all but Ken Liu and Robin Hobb are at the very top of that list.

Not enough people talk about this series. I honestly think it stands as the best fantasy published in the last 10 years. Related Question, Which big name epic fantasy series have actually concluded in the past 10 years?
