Neal barely had more than four minutes with Duggan, so we're not sure of chemistry there. However the chemistry with Richard Thomas was motion picture grade. She also did a very convincing interaction with Ellen Corby. Grandma ranting on about one thing or another, judging the family or Livvy....but Livvy just ignores her, doesn't engage and just keeps on doing her tasks. That sold the role for me.

I think Patricia Neal portrays a more accurate depression era mother with a large family. Mothers of that era probably needed to be stern and no nonsense. I agree that on a weekly series Olivia needed to be more warm and caring, which Michael played perfectly.

So beautifully put and so true! It's so wonderful to see that they're as close in real life as they were on the show. They really did pick out the perfect cast for each role. I watch The Waltons everyday at noon. With the way the world is today, it's so nice to get away and go to a simpler time to a family that had so much love for each for each other! It's my nice little escape each day! 🤗💞

When Richard was talking about filming his last episode from Season 5 and then going back to New York and getting really sick, and he said it was from "the trauma of leaving the family" that got me really teary eyed and emotional. He brought such an irreplaceable light to the show and it was so hard to see him go. But I'm glad the two of you talked about it here Judy. And I am so glad that he came back for a few guest stars in Season 6. I respect him a lot for coming back and making sure the audience didn't have the wrong impression. Richard hit the nail on the head with selecting Will Geer for the series. Michael and Ellen were equally fabulous, adding their own touch to the show. The series touched on so many emotions, life experiences, the lessons we learn along the journey. I don't believe I have ever experienced that type of feeling in any other tv series..... Hi Judy. Thank you again for part 3 of the family reunion. It just touched my heart when Richard spoke about how hard it was for him to "leave the family." I really believe everything worked out just as it should have. All actors who were a part of the show as well as the homecoming and Spencers mountain were a part of history. Fulfilling a life long dream of the great Earl Hamner, who was so proud of his family, community and humble background. All that molded him, built his character and provided him with such great memories. He was gracious enough to share all of that and more through his storytelling and all these gifted actors. For that I thank all of the cast members. Thank you Earl Hamner and family. 💜 💛 💚 🧡

Felicia, that is beautifully expressed and so important to include what you have about Mr. Hamner. I was thinking the same during this interview as I do with every Walton reminder. Thank you! I also think it was brave of Richard Thomas & of Robert Wightman to take on all of the artistic, professional and life challenges they did with John Boy, throughout coming & going! Ultimately, all of Mr. Hamner’s spirit, fortitude and love shine through and create ongoing community

I believe Ralph Waite was an awesome pick for the father of the show Im glad they made the changes from the Homecoming. I can't imagine anyone else playing the roles of the Walton family. You were all amazing. There was so much chemistry between the actors and actresses. The cast made it seem believable that all of you were truly a family which made it easy for people to relate to your lives. The powers that be made perfect choices when casting each role. I remember feeling so sad and disappointed when Richard Thomas left the series. And while I liked the actor that took on the part of John Boy, he still just wasn't John Boy in my eyes. Richard Thomas brought so much to the role that there was just no replacement for him. These interviews between you and Richard Thomas have been so enjoyable. And your willingness to include what might be seen as sensitive topics for public consumption (handled with masterful aplomb!) is more evidence of the original show's "courage of its own convictions" that continues to make it such a timeless benchmark. It’s so sad family life like this seems to be a thing of the past !😢 I grew up on this show never missed a episode was a great cast Ellen Corby and Will Geer were perfect grandparents reminds me of my own who have long since passed they were old school lived through the depression era! Family is so important and wish more people were like this these days! Families do not even sit around the dinner table together these days it seems! :(

Seeing Richard in these interviews you can definitely see what a talented actor he is because he seems nothing like John Boy who was so laid back and natural. Richard seems more refined and cultured. Bless you for your memories of "The Homecoming." It's a must see every Christmas season. I had the honor (really was) of meeting native Kentuckian Patricia Neal a couple of times in the '90's. Once was at a special showing of "Hud" at The Capitol Theater in Frankfort, Kentucky. Like any good Southern Baptist I took a seat in the back row. Midway through the film I noticed someone was ushered in and seated slightly across from me at a small table. When the film was over and the lights came back on, I saw that Patricia Neal was my seatmate! At the end of the film she remained seated but entertained a long session of questions & answers. I was too much of a coward to ask anything. However I also had the pleasure of seeing her once again at an annual bookfair in Frankfort shortly after her autobiography had been published. I found my tongue and we talked for a few minutes. I told her how much I appreciated her work and how special "The Homecoming" was as an annual tradition. Curiosity got the best of me and I asked why she didn't reprise her role on the TV series. As with Michael Learned, she told me pretty much pointblank, "Because I wasn't asked." She didn't say it in a bitter tone... but more like someone that felt they'd not been shown consideration. Her mind and memory were sharp, but she obviously was physically frail... but dressed to the 9's. Both she and Michael Learned brought their own qualities to the role. However, as someone that'd grown up in the southern Appalachian region and had experienced the Great Depression years, Ms. Neal's portrayal reminded me so much of the folks of my grandparents generation. They knew firsthand the hardships of the depression years in the rural south. Also, both my parents were born in 1923 (Momma one of 13; Daddy one of six). They'd sometimes watch "The Waltons" and recall their memories of growing up during those difficult times... that in turn developed their character into the Greatest Generation. Please forgive my winded rambling... it's a case where I got started and couldn't stop. But again, thanks to you and Richard Thomas for sharing your recollections.

Thank you for sharing your story and about your family. I thought Patricia was perfect for the stand alone TV movie - and I understand going into a series there may have needed a new angle - a woman who didn’t seem to have gone through so much already, but could grow with the seasons of the show - Michael fit that perfectly.

Ah Richard, you did “own” the part of John boy. I always thought that replacing the adults was a wise decision. Michael was mamma, Ralph was daddy and will was grandpa. Such a fabulous time.
