The Waltons is an American drama television series about a family in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II. It was created by Earl Hamner Jr., based on his 1961 book Spencer's Mountain and the 1963 film of the same name.
The television movie The Homecoming: A Christmas Story was broadcast on December 19, 1971. Based on its success, the CBS television network ordered one season of episodes based on the same characters and that became the television series The Waltons. Beginning in September 1972, the series subsequently aired on CBS for nine seasons. After the series was canceled by CBS in 1981, NBC aired three television film sequels in 1982, with three more in the 1990s on CBS. The Waltons was produced by Lorimar Productions and distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution in syndication.
EDIT: Richard Thomas, Ellen Corby, & the other child cast members
were carried over to the cast of the series,
the other characters were recast. This was one of, if not the first videos I made and there were a few errors including mispronouncing a few names.

Life was difficult and challenging for this family and many across the nation. Difference between then and now... families taught humility, respect, loyalty, hard work, honesty, value of life and understanding. This is a generation that while it had it's issues it worked together to overcome ... God bless those who held and hold those strengths and the faith that wove it together into a beautiful quilt of life ...

The Waltons was a wholesome show that portrayed honesty and family values. While the episodes took place 80-90 years ago, the message is timeless. Sure, anyone can find some factual errors, but what program does not have a few? Many people today could sure learn a lot from The Walton Family.

Every Thursday night at 8:00 pm, my mom, dad and I would watch. And I would ask questions and my parents would answer. My parents were of the Greatest generation and lived though that time. I was learning about the Great Depression and the show The Waltons was set in the Great Depression so I enjoyed watching the show and asking my parents questions about that time. It was a good time. I still watch the show when I get the chance and remember back, nice memories.

I have always enjoyed watching The Waltons growing up and I have grown to really love watching reruns in the mid 80's when I was in High School. My parents were divorced and my Daddy moved to Waynesboro Virginia when he got transfered to the Dupont Plant there. What made me excited is that alot of places mentioned, I have been. Charlottesville, Stanton (that's where the Statler Brothers are from and would put on a big carnival and free concert every 4th of July) Richmond. I never went by the Hamner home back then, I never asked about going but Daddy said Mrs Hamner would come out alot of times if people were in front looking at their house and at times bring out cookies and something to drink

When I was 10 years old back in 1976, I flew to LA from Denver to visit my Aunt and Uncle in Altadena. Well, I flew out there on a Continental Airlines DC-10 in first class, and wouldn't you know grandpa Walton was sitting right across from me. The whole flight I kept looking over and wanting to say hello but didn't. The last time I saw him was in the terminal carrying a guitar case heading to an escalator.

I grew up with the Walton’s being on a television every week. I went to camp when I was twelve and one night in our bunk house in the dark someone said “Good night, Daddy”, which of course started a long series of good nights, not to the Walton kids, but to all of us in the cabin. Finally, our camp councilor told us that we had said enough good nights and told us to go to sleep. The Walton’s was a big part of my growing up as a young boy along with Little House on the Prairie, and so many other great tv shows. I miss those lovely days of television long ago when it was still fresh and new and the ideas where original. I have cable now but I rarely ever turn on the television anymore. It’s just not worth it.

The Waltons, as depicted in the series, were not all that poor, even though we were supposed to think they were. They apparently owned their farm. It was of considerable size, and had significant development: barns, shops, a good house. They had ELECTRICITY, unusual for rural America in the 1930s. The electricity allowed them to have running water and indoor plumbing (the electricity was needed to pump the water). All in all, they were doing well for the depression era 1930s. I notice these details because my own father was raised in rural America in the 1930s. His dad, my grandfather, did not own a farm. Their rented house had neither running water or electricity. Oh, by the way, no running water means that the toilet is out back in a little shack. Do you know what a 'outhouse' is? I know...The Waltons is a fictional broadcast television show. It is meant to portray family values. It is a charming, well made show.

I remember the Thursday nights at 8:00pm on CBS when this TV series aired in the 1970's. To me The Waltons had its golden years from 1972-1976. I think a coupla of the cast members started to leave and left permanently. Then Will Geer died. To me that's when things changed. 🕯⚘ Oh, well.

All of the Walton children from The Homecoming remained for the TV series. Three of the four adult Waltons were played by different actors, but the kids were all the same.

Watched every ep new, loved it. I was 11 when it began, and was 21 or 22 when it ended. I read the book Spencer's Mountain, and watched the movie when new. I also watched the reunion movies of the show after the show ended.Mary Ellen and Ralph Waite were my faves. Waite was cute, and I watched his show when he was a lawyer on a paddlewheel boat, in modern times. It was good, and should have been on 5 seasons at least.

None of the kids were recast when the show was picked up for a series. The only two characters who were recast from the pilot series the homecoming, were Patricia Neal and the actor who portrayed the Grandfather. Everyone else was cast in the series. All of the kids who played on the pilot show, were all the original cast members. Who went on to star in the series.

If the Waltons had existed in the same era and area (the Great Depression, rural VA), the family would be well to do: electricity, plumbing (a toilet especially), a phone, a car, and a truck. All the kids finished school, and inferred they all went to college for at least 2 years.

My dad also pointed that out. In Illinois, most people didn't get electricity in rural areas until after FDR was president. My grandparents got electricity in 1940. The REA "Rural Electrification Administration" was put on hold because the resources were needed to fight WW2. My sister and I were born in the 1960s and were the first generation to go to Kindergarten and not attend a one-room schoolhouse. We didn't have private phone lines until the 1970s. My mom was a telephone operator until she got married. My aunt her older sister had to work her way through high school. My aunt lived 9 miles from the high school. There were no school busses that went into the country. She got a job as a waitress and found a room in town. During her senior year of high school, she worked as a telephone operator. That is how she worked her way through high school. Until the 1950s a high school education was not always an entitlement.

They survived because of a plant that moved into their town in the 1920s that provided them free electricity and more. They were considered a poor town by the state of Virginia. Find this very interesting detail that is provided in this link kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zrh3gNJmyNTek4k.html

The Actress who played Verdie would later be part of the First Fully Integrated Soap Opera Generations that also starred Kristoff St. John (RIP). She also played Cousin Georgia in Roots The Next Generations whose Father may have either been Virgil or Louis who along with Grandma Cindy and Aunt Liz (Alex's Relatives) would sit out on The Front Porch and talk out the Old Stories including how the Old African Went into the Woods and got Caught and was sold in Annapolis, MD. Many folks who guest starred would go on to be successful in his own right. Melody Thomas Scott who played one of John Boy's Many Girlfriends now has a 42 Year Tenure as Nikki Reed Newman On The Young & The Restless. John Ritter (RIP) played a Minister before playing Jack Tripper on Three's Company based on the UK Sitcom Man About The House, Todd Bridges was on the Show as well as Little House On The Prairie who would later play Willis on Diff'Rent Strokes and had problems with Drugs & Alcohol who would do time in Prison who admitted he was sexually abused. He along with Ralph Waite and Richard Thomas was in Roots based Shows. He played "Bud" Chicken George's Grandson. Michael Learned insisted her name have a Miss because she didn't want people to think she was a Man and was a recovering Alcoholic. Ellen Corby who played Esther, was a Lesbian in Real Life who also was in a Prison Movie. Eric Scott who played Ben, guest starred on Bewitched as did Will Geer. Judy Norton Taylor tried a comeback by posing for Playboy but it didn't work out and Mary McDonough who played Erin admitted that she and alot of TV Actresses in teh 1970's and 1980's battled Anorexia.
