Hey, love this, the attorney at the end was spitting straight facts! :D I especially appreciate this take on the "unnecessary feelings" line, because I agree with it. It's fun to meme this line, but ultimately the romantic context isn't really there. Personally I do ship Wrightworth, but throughout the first game it was always about their reunion and them becoming close friends again. They have a close bond for sure, but it's about friendship. It could evolve into something more but it also doesn't have to, which is what makes it fun in my opinion. Also fandoms can get incredibly toxic over ships and it's important to remember to respect other fans, well said, attorney. :)

It's frustrating to me that the fact people show off their ship because it has a lot evidence to back it up but it could easily be interpreted in another way. I personally ship wrightworth and this video just made me gain a lot of respect for you, i have stumbled to alot of instsancies of people arguing back and fourth and going nowhere just because of a ship... But most of those same arguments end quite well. (Ending it 'respectfully' -like, but the disagreement is still there). Usually i always stay quiet during debates like these because I'm not really good at explaining 😂 especially trying to back up my opinion because I personally 'go with the flow' or "i just ship it because I think it's cute and it's also fun :)" . Just as you know, these things happen to ALOT of fandoms..they become toxic or biased and not open to more interpretation (aka creativity) and just.. looked down upon. "OMy gAwSH hOW daRé yøU bAsH oñ mAH sHIp!1!1! It'S SOoOoooO cANon LikE LoOK aT iT!1!1!!1!!!1" of course that's my exaggerated expression of what they say but sometimes they also have some really good points about their ship having more of a chance becoming canon because of those points but not necessarily be official yet. That's one of the reasons I don't like argue because they could hit me with alot of good evidence that im totally at a loss of words. The ship itself is not the problem, but the people shipping it is (not all tho. THAT I've agreed with) This is one of my many problems. people being toxic about it cause it's more likely to be canon or has alot of scenes or evidence of them actually tying the knot and that all ships are unvalid except for them. (I have a lot to add to this but I'm gonna end it here. for now..)

With all due respect, you raise several very good points, but I cannot help but disagree with some of the things you say. For example, let's take a look at your interpretation of the line "unnecessary feelings". Yes, your interpretation makes sense, but that doesn't mean that other interpretations don't make sense. Considering the way Edgeworth was raised by Manfred von Karma, it's not that hard to see Edgeworth being taught that most emotions, especially love, to be unnecessary. And, considering Manfred von Karma, it's also not hard to imagine loving another man to be especially unnecessary. Your second point I disagree with is your point about Edgeworth coming to help Phoenix. Let's assume that you are correct in your assumption that Edgeworth thought that Phoenix had simply been arrested. We know that lawyers can represent themselves in court in this world, as seen in Turnabout Sisters. We also know that Phoenix is fully capable of defending himself in court, once again, as seen in Turnabout Sisters. We also know that Edgeworth knows about this, as he is the prosecutor in Turnabout Sisters. As such, it doesn't make sense in that regard that Edgeworth would find it necessary to defend Phoenix, unless he had other reasons for wanting to help Phoenix. Finally, I object to the idea that a ship, by necessity, requires grounding in canon to be good, and that it needs to generate actual content, and can't just be a simple headcanon that is shared by several people. Sometimes, a ship is between two characters that have never interacted, shipped together only because they'd be cute together. A good example of this is any ship focused around the characters of the mobile game Cookie Run. There really isn't precedent for many of the fanon ships surrounding that game, but plenty of them are rather adorable and wholesome. However, Cookie Run is also a good example of why not to ship characters, as some Cookie Run shippers do ship ships that are somewhat problematic. Overall, if the characters are not related and are of similar age, then shipping them is just fine. Granted, there is one more rule, that being that a ship should avoid glorifying an abusive relationship, though that can be thought of as simply good writing. Wrightworth fits all the bills, and though there are some that may say that it has no grounding in canon, I say that that does not necessarily mean that it's a bad ship. However, your final point in the video about how some people get incredibly toxic about Wrightworth is, regrettably, very true. This is why I am ending this by simply saying that those who disagree with Wrightworth may as well be equal to those who do ship Wrightworth, because at the end of the day, we're debating about a video game series that hasn't gotten a new installment for a couple of years. Frankly, the only importance Wrightworth holds is whether or not shipping it makes you happy.

A nice comment with wonderful analysis there! Well here's my answer to your analysis in general- 1)Your point about Edgeworth tbh isn't exactly right as Edgeworth himself clarified that the feelings were of uncertainty and unease due to him destroying many lives in 1-4 and 1-5 .Therefore the possibility of love a unnecessary feeling doesn't make sense. 2nd- Yea in 1-2 Phoenix defended himself but that's because that case was too easy which even Edgeworth knows. Besides which, Edgeworth was sleeping. When anyone would be startled they wouldn't sit to think that they can defend himself(not mocking you at all, just saying.). Plus Larry worded it in a frightening way so that explains it. 3) Your point is absolutely spot on but I was replying to ones who were saying "No, this ship is completely concrete! No possibility exists that this ship doesn't exist!" Even when as you can see that there are some pretty solid arguments in favour of Non- Wrightworth shippers as well. So yeah you are right on that aspect. And yes ig the ship technically isn't completely nulled, but then the truth also remains that in game, till now the Ship isn't CONCLUSIVE, not that it cant exist, just isn't conclusive. While I respectfully disagree I gotta admit your comment/analysis is fantastic! This is how people should put their ideas and disagreements instead of just going "who asked" or "ratio+bozo" etc. Feel free to correct me if i am wrong:) I hope you have a nice day!

@@theaceattorneyslasher5165 This is something I've noticed in this video before, though I opted not to comment the first time around because I felt like you were probably tired of the arguments. The thing is Unnecessary Feelings is case 1-3, not 1-2. Case 1-2 doesn't really say anything about Edgeworth, he just leaves. So it's was his second loss that Edgeworth comes out to talk to Phoenix, and unnecessary feelings is in direct response to the fact that Edgeworth's long standing moral dilemma and Objecting to his own witness, Dee Vasquez. His dilemma seems to have been happening ever since he first became a prosecutor, with the disastrous Terry Fawles trial, in which while he was disturbed and unsettled. He started to wonder if he was really doing the right thing, but he doubled down because he felt he couldn't take the risk that any criminal might go free. In essence, as you say, his dilemma is very much about whether he is his father's son - honest, cares about justice - or Von Karma's student - ruthless, grandstanding, arrogant. This is then why 1-4 brings up the class trial, the part of Edgeworth that is his father's son is the part that earned him a life-long friend, and is what makes Edgeworth actually redeemable. However, because Phoenix also represents the memories Edgeworth's lost childhood and innocence, a time before the tragedy, Phoenix's reappearance is incredibly painful for Edgeworth, and so some of those unnecessary feelings actually kind of ARE about Phoenix. I was translating an officially approved magazine article with interviews from the devs and anime production team from Japanese recently, specifically centered about 1-3 and the Steel Samurai case. There was a blurb talking about how Edgeworth's motivations is basically that he wishes to avoid unnecessary acquaintances. The specific wording in the Japanese version of the game isn't unnecessary feelings, but rather more like "rising feelings," however, saying that some of what is bothering Edgeworth in 1-3 is unnecessary acquaintances does suggest that some of those rising or unnecessary feelings were about Phoenix as well. Obviously this does not immediately imply love, and so anything one way or another all comes down to headcanon, however so long as interpretations are not contradicted neither interpretation is wrong. They're simply just that, interpretations. Personally I feel like Edgeworth actually has unreciprocated feelings towards Phoenix because there's an easy to miss conversation in 3-5 that Edgeworth and Iris have, where Iris says that she knows that Edgeworth has a secret he's keeping from Phoenix, that it's the same secret as hers, and Edgeworth doesn't deny it. Even if he has these feelings, though, he may still be aroace because of what he says in 6-DLC, or, he may be saying he doesn't plan to get married simply because he knows or believes that Phoenix isn't interested. There are times in canon and semi-canon material where Edgeworth talks about and even seems to care about romance. For example, he thinks the wedding chapel in that same case would be a romantic wedding venue, he supports the idea of the characters in that case renewing their wedding vows, and there's an audio drama where he and Phoenix help the daughter of one of Edgeworth's superiors sneak off and elope with a son of a yakuza family, and Edgeworth is punished with a pay cut for it. So the truth mostly just seems to be complicated, and it's unlikely we'll ever get a confirmation of anything out of Capcom.

@@rebellemuria Hmmm.. not bad analysis. Truth is complicated. And again in the end nothing is conclusive...so that's the thing. One thing about DLC case of SOJ. The dialogue itself may support your point but Edgeworth's facial expressions are like mad, which makes me think he really just isnt interested. But yeah i get your point. @@theaceattorneyslasher5165 Yeah, though the context of him being really angry is Phoenix making up a really out there argument about the Power of Love letting someone climb the side of zeppelin while extremely injured, so he goes off on a rant about Phoenix being a pop culture junkie (because the Power of Love thing is 80s references all the way down) and when the Judge tries to calm him down with "well, someday you might get married and understand it's okay" Edgeworth is like "I'LL NEVER GET MARRIED!" And Phoenix is like "Oh boy, you really set him off." There's a lot of context is all I'm saying, and I think it can honestly go either way in terms of whether workaholic Edgeworth absolutely wants no relationship except with his job, or if he's just kind of a sad and still PTSD riddled person falling back on the habits his abuser taught him to avoid putting his emotions out there.

I am a Wrightworth enjoyer. And may I just say, I actually agree with Godot, in the sense that “Unnecessary feelings” is not romantic at all. There are several instances with more solid evidence to back up this ship, but I’m afraid “unnecessary feelings” is NOT one of them. Sorry. Just my take.

Is the scene with Iris and Edgeworth a valid base for shipping Wrightworth? It happens in 'Bridge to the Turnabout' when you present the wrong profile to Iris with the Psyche Locks. She asks if Edgeworth if he had a deep dark secret of his own. Edgeworth says yes, although he is surprised she knew, and when he asks how, she tells him "takes one to know one" ... At that point, Miles has already gotten over his dilemma as a prosecutor, and the DL-6 case had already been resolved. Plus, the context for that interaction was Iris' feelings for Phoenix. Would it be a stretch to suggest Edgeworth has romantic feelings for Phoenix the same way Iris does?

Well then again, we have the scene of Soj DLC case. And also perhaps the dilemma here is the suspicion of knowing Iris to be Dahlia as he still didn't believe in the spirit channeling stuff. Besides which, even though Iris has the secret of hiding her identity, all she said is that both of them hid a secret. Not that Edgeworth hid his feelings for Phoenix. You can see that when Phoenix talked to Edgeworth about DL6 still haunting him, he confessed to that and that he doesn't believe in Spirit Chanelling with Phoenix monologuing that he will show Edgeworth one day that Spirit Channeling exists. Therefore it isn't conclusive. Still I respect your opinion

OBJECTION! You must remember that the DLC case was originally released in Japan, where same sex marriage isn't legalized. Therefore, Edgeworth's dismissal of marriage in the original translation would *have* to have been referring to straight marriage, which means he isn't interested in women (or at least in marrying one, although there's more evidence to prove his lack of interest butthat'sawholeothercanofworms). One could argue on what he means in the English translation, but since the game is originally in Japan, I believe the original translation has more weight anyway (side eyes the "aibou" line *hard* /hj) As for your rebuttal of my previous points, you make a good point. That's not how I saw it, but I respect your interpretation nonetheless.

You're implying that Edgeworth's secret is his feelings about _spirit channeling,_ but he doesn't hide his disdain for it, as seen from all the times he talks about it with Wright. From Iris' wording, it seems like his secret would be something worth 5 Psyche Locks, like hers, so it couldn't be that. And yes, he could still shaken by the events of DL-6 despite the retrial, but again, he's rather open about this, so it couldn't count as a secret (the extent of how much it affects him could be argued, but even then it would probably count as 1 or 2 Psyche Locks). P.S. I'd like to clarify that, as a Wrightworth shipper, I'm not trying to change your mind. You could ignore all of this if you wish. But this ship is something that brings me a lot of joy and I like talking about it, so think of this as a 'playful argument' ^^

Well, the thing about the first game is that it wasn't meant to be interpreted as romantic... But after Takumi and the team saw how the fandom reacted they decided to study yaoi in order to add more fuel to the ship in the sequels. But it was never explicit because of 2 reasons: 1. Campcom didn't like the idea of getting the game banned in like 2/3 of the world. 2. the actual bl author (who left the team at that time, but she was still kind of like a consultant) told Takumi that he wasn't good at it and that it was better when he accidentally make it sound gay. So the ship became implicit only. To the point that Nintendo's magazine said it was one of the 25 best couples of gaming (ranked like 16), and Campcom sold matching wedding rings based on both characters. This actually expanded to other forms of media/products related to the franchise, that may or may not be canon. Such as how in the oficial manga Edgeworth thinks of Wright everytime he is stress out, or how Phoenix asks Edgeworth if he loves him (before being interrupted by this tsundere of a man). Also, there's the whole keychain and "rainbow samurais" in the anime (too on the nose, tbh); not to mention, Edgeworth really thought that Wright was dead, not arrested. Is it queerbaithing? Maybe, but they are very aware of the ship. Is it ok to not ship it? Yes, what you said it's absolutely (w)right... Unless if you are doing it because you are just being a homophobe, I guess... Shipping is not about hate, it's about love.

I completely agree with your points! Knowing that I have also seen some of the "evidences" mentioned, it's a rather exquisite argument! Not only does this "queerbaiting" occur within the confines of AA, but a lot of other films have also resorted to casual teasing among the fans, as they are well aware of the shipping that occurs within the fandom. I ABSOLUTELY AGREE with the presence of mutual respect between shippers and non-shippers to keep the fandom from being toxic and uncomfortable. As one relatively new to Ace Attorney, I love WrightWorth, whether or not they are romantic, because of their dynamic and their relationship as a whole, without putting any labels.

Thank you for making this video I literally thought I was the only one in the fandom who thought that basing this whole ship on Edgeworth's line of """unnecessary feelings""" was taking things out of context by a long mile. I take for granted it is extremely easy to take out of context though XD, but unironically shipping Phoenix and Edgeworth because of that is, imho, a bit too much. Special mention goes for those people who ship them because of this, even when they know the context of what Edgeworth was going through at that time as well. I even think that shipping Edgeworth and Rhoda Teneiro makes much more sense lol

Honestly, i just thought theyre gay cause of the fact on one of the 3d AA games, wright responsed edgeworth on one of his arguments with "yes, daddy..." or something Unnecessary feelings are just poor arguments. As in court, there are a lot of feelings that really are not needed.

Finally! I was waiting for something like this. I admit, there often feels like romantic undertones that add to the tension/mystique. But it would be wildly out of character for both (especially edgeworth) to actually act on that. It's just there for fan service and that explains the rings. After all, merch is done with the intention of appeasing fans, if they wanted to make it canon there would be smth in the game/anime.

I guess they never make things canon but if they were just queer baiting they could’ve easily done it. I guess it’s not very weird because Phoenix x Edgeworth isn’t confirmed canon but what confuses me is the fact they activity put down the maya x Phoenix ship. They didn’t have to yet they did.
