Great Big Story

Great Big Story

8 жыл бұрын

Shifu Shi Yan Ming was the first to bring Shaolin kung fu to the United States. Trained as a Shaolin Temple Warrior Monk in China, he was on a tour of the U. S. in 1992 when he defected. By 1994, he had moved to New York City where he opened USA Shaolin Temple and began training students in kung fu and other martial arts, including Wu-Tang Clan. The rest is history.

Shoaling had a sort of physical training called iron head, it greatly increase the human's head's resistance to attacks, even attack via blunt weapons. the New York police should hire him to train officers in this skill. Police officer injury most commonly occur when they get sucker punched in the head, sometime a single sucker punch and you are down and they can start kicking and punching you, while you are down. If they are trained in Shoaling Iron Head, getting sucker punch in the head, nothing happen, to the cop and the cops just grab the thug and arrest him. (I saw Shoaling monks putting it in practice in competition in the US, in the middle of the match, he suddenly lower is defense and let the opponent keep punching him for number of time and nothing happen, even the anchor was shock how he is able to stand there and take so many punches of this sort like this and then the Shoaling monk just in three moves KO the other guy)

there were many hollywood stars to come to the temple - most for private lessons. Very few joined the class the rest of the students attended. That said, though, many notable folks were in the temple well before RZA. But, it's great they built the partnership.

In 1998 I was there training with him when he was on Broadway. My first class Rosie Perez was there. She’s tiny! Athletic. And sexy. After class we would all go to a nearby Cajun restaurant to eat and drink beer. It was fun. I felt out of place because there were sooo many rich people there. I used to attend the Writers Room nearby afterwards to write and recover. It was fun. But I left because I couldn’t afford it. And Sufi’s then wife, Sofia, called to offer me free lessons when he found out I couldn’t pay. Awesome dude.

Actually, the person who brought kung fu to America was Grand Master Ark Y. Wong. Born around 1898 and 1902 (he always added a couple of years to his age when asked). He died in 1987. He was made Master about the age of 17 and Grand Master around the age of 31. He studied under several renowned Masters from the age of 7. His first kung fu school was opened up to Chinese only in the 1920s or 30s. It wasn't until the late 1950s he opened kung fu up to non-Chinese. For this he was threatened. But was unconcerned. He had many well-known martial artists who were influenced by him including Shihan Robert Trias (Shorei Karate), Jimmy H. Woo (San Soo), David Caradine (actor), Bruce Lee (JKD), Ed Parker (American Kenpo) and Dan Inosanto (Escrima). Grand Master Ark Yuey Wong is the true father of kung fu in America.

The one thing about the martial arts is that the art of Kung-fu is for everyone any age any size as Shi Yan Ming Mentions in the video, I have been Practicing another Discipline and brought in Kung-fu into my school over the past 30 years, and it has been a blessing. the Movements are so flowing, because its Less Stress on the human body especially when you get a little older.. but it works.. Be inspired by Kung-FU!!!!! Be Inspired by Life and and Reach for your Dream!!! Be You!!! 1st!!! after that everything will Fall into Place....

My martial arts teacher was a Shaolin monk for quite some time. He's younger than Ming here in the video, but he's trained for about a decade in the Shaolin Temple since age 10. He's no joke, that's for sure. I've spent several years learning under him, and though it's not a "practical" art per se, man the physical capability that you develop doing jumps, kicks, stretches, some acrobatics, and handling weapons really make you feel more comfortable in your body. A little gripe I have though is that unlike Shifu Ming, my teacher, who's named Shifu Xing Xue, is rather lax. There are times when I feel I'm not actually pulling off my forms properly, but he glosses over it. In this video, what the people are doing aren't necessarily as complex, but they maintain decent form. I'd want my teacher to be a little like Ming: progress slower but perfect what you know.

I had a seminar with Shi Yan Ming enjoyed it he's a good teacher, but not the first to bring Shaolin Kung Fu to america, considering Shaolin or styles that trace there origin to Shaolin are some of the more popular styles in China and Chinese have been coming to this country since at least 1849 in my opinion it's unrealistic to think that none of them knew any Shaolin Kung Fu, there also have been many Americans who have studied Kung Fu including Shaolin in places like Hong Kong and Taiwan and than came back to America, myself I started studying Kung Fu in 1989 (in America) from teachers that had learned it in the 1960s and 1970s and this included some Shaolin forms and other styles that claim to have originated in Shaolin,
@mikewinburn
@mikewinburn Жыл бұрын
while i understand what you mean, in fact, Yan Ming was in fact the first to establish here in USA an authentic Shaolin Temple martial training center / Buddhist worship center as mirrors the temple in Henan. Yes, traditional shaolin techniques have been taught in USA long before Yan Ming arrived - Hung Gar, Hung Fat.. etc. But the teachers in the schools are not, and were not from 'the actual shaolin temple'. It's one thing to learn from a someone who teaches techniques that originated in the Shaolin Temple, and another thing to learn from someone directly from shaolin temple. You may likely be aware of the fact that there are very few actual fighting monks in Shaolin. Those few monks teach at the shaolin training center which is near the temple (but is not the actual shaolin temple). Many people leave the training center and open schools around the world today. Again, its one thing to be a disciple from the training center in Henan who has opened a school, and another thing to be an actual fighting monk from the actual temple :) but hey, i get your point.
@minnesotakungfucom
@minnesotakungfucom Жыл бұрын
@@mikewinburn So I don't want to say anything negative about modern shaolin as I've trained with a few of the monks in seminars & enjoyed training with each. But as I'm sure you know shaolin was burned in 1928 & in the 1960s was disbanded during the cultural revolution forcing most of the monks into secular life. It's modern resurgence came primarily after Jet Li's movie Shaolin temple came out sparking increased tourism more money coming in and more potential students flocking to the temple. Many instructors have criticized that what is mostly taught there at least to the general public and used in demos is primarily modern wushu (the sport created by the Chinese government in an attempt to get into the Olympics based on traditional martial arts but with more tumbling and acrobatics added & an emphasis on form over application since that is the only thing judged in competition) I have copies of many hours of the national survey the Chinese government did going around the country in the 80s and videotaping old masters in an attempt to preserve the martial arts heritage (they sent out over 4,000 workers to collect this information) and I can say very little of the current martial arts footage I see coming from China in general (not just shaolin) looks anything like what the old masters were demoing. Anyways I rarely go on my martial arts account anymore as my main channel is now on guitar instruction 🙂something I've done for 35 years

What! This makes no sense at all? Who trained David Carradine in 1972?

***** Bruce was Wing Chun, as taught by Ip Man who escaped in the 1940s. I would say most Kung Fu went to Hong Kong or elsewhere. Whatever Shaolin is in the mainland can't be original.

***** Yes, I know. But Ip Man is responsible for most of the Wing Chun that is taught in present day. He was is Fushun, then left around 1949 or so. And don't believe anything in those movies about him. Since David Carradine was a Shaolin Monk in 1972 American TV, it seems odd that this guy would claim to be the source of American Shaolin teachings? There were also many other forms of Kung Fu being taught in the US in the 1960s, some of which challenged Bruce Lee because he taught non-Chinese. Bruce even mentioned Kung Fu in his audition tape, and in an episode of Green Hornet. Is this just another case of some dumbass millennial thinking all history started at their birth?
