Watch brands spend mountains of money every year on celebrity ambassadors and influencer marketing. This is money that could be going into making better watches or into substantive collaborations that outlive marketing campaigns.
This is Grand Complications, our new series tackling the watch world's stickier subjects. Today's topic: Are the people who wear the watches more important than the people who design them?

I am extremely product centric as the product is everything but next, the people who create the products are the most important ☝🏽

Great topic. I personally hate when a brand invests in influencers and "celebrities" to promote their product. Its a huge turn off for me.

Pharrell has had his own clothing line since the early 00’s (Ice Cream and Billionaire Boys Club) which is why he got the Louis Vuitton role. I think it’s a combination of influencers, liking the design and features of a watch. It’s not necessarily the reason you’d buy but maybe the icing on the cake that a celeb wears your watch or endorses it.

I appreciate some of them, I need them to show me how a watch looks in the flesh rather than on photos. And buying online rather than at the shop does save a little overheads etc.

I totally agree. I don´t care about any celebrity in general. When I see ambassadors I always think that I pay this nonsense when I buy a watch.

When an historic brand like AP has reached out to Nico Leonard (at least according to him) and want to do a collab, are setting off a time-bomb on their brand. And suppose this actually works out and they sell a few more watches, what happens next? The brand has "endorsed" Nico as an "expert", their watches will over time be subject to his liking(accompanied with the right fee) or not.

What's laughable is when the social media influencer tells you that the freebie watch or the review fee will have no influence on what they say. Even worse there are paid shills out there who claim they never accept inducements. OK Ciao!! 😂😂😂

I think Lewis Hamilton has been a great ambassador for IWC. Because you don’t see him out wearing a bunch of other brands, and they seem to be a partnership rather than a paid spokesperson.

Lewis CAN'T wear other watch brands: it's a sponsorship. IWC is Mercedes AMG's sponsor and everyone in the team has to wear IWC. Next year you'll see him wearing Richard Mille, since it's one of Ferrari's sponsors...

I don't think you can make a comparison between the car industry and the watch industry. A car is (usually) a necessity, a watch is an accessory. I love watches but nobody actually needs one.

@@watchfan1655But he is right. These two guys are also influencers. Maybe they don't get paid by watch brands, maybe they do this out of love, but since they are part of the social media system, which imposes on you certain format, they are influencers. If they talked about books, about the history of watches, about the relationship between watches and history, in short, if they did something intellectual, beyond watches as luxury objects, then they would be something different than mere influencers.

Asking watch brands not to utilize a new form of marketing is naive. By now, they clearly have evidence that influencer marketing positively impacts sales.
@patrickjean-philippe7679
@patrickjean-philippe7679 Ай бұрын
Yes, they follow whatever trend will maximise sales. Since we live in a world where people have extremely malleable personalities and will run after the latest hip trends from whatever celebrities they follow then it works… It’s sad but that’s how it is. I however am more interested in the creative process of the designer.

How about youtube reviewers, like The Time Teller or Peter Kotsa or Nico. They are also influencers because they influence the consumer's buying experience, and many of them may be paid or get gifts. I never follow these people because I find their channels hollow, closer to advertising than to serious comment on watchmaking. Renecca Struthers just published a great book about the history of watchmaking, but no one talks about it; these influencers don't read; their knowledge about watches is limited to technical specs, things that a person who really loves watches doesn't care about.
