Truly soulful, Mike is fabulous and a great live act. Probably don't want them as big and commercial as U2, keep them truly golden.

Think after This is the Sea, they could have gone big stadium with their next album style choice. Luckily for us, they ended up in Galway doing Fisherman’s Blues .

Prince's version of "Whole of the moon" , has in a way ; increased their profile here . It is a shame that lesser bands may have better recognition, but if I was an artist I would feel very proud too read these remarks

@@toriidawdy8456 I hate what Prince did to that song. I guess I'm glad if it helped raise the Waterboys'/Scott's profile. But Prince robbed the song of it's meaning and magic. This from a Prince fan. It's like he didn't understand what the song was about. So he made it all about himself. Rant over.

@@kokokellitn1 I think that may have been Prince’s intention - to see how far he could remove the song of its original qualities and still carry it, displaying just how well written the song is. The song was partly inspired by Prince after Mike Scott saw him in New York and his faith in “80’s music was found”. He already had the line “I saw the crescent, you saw the whole of the moon” which he came up with on the same trip to NY when his girlfriend asked him how hard it was to write a song, to which he looked up at the night sky and said those words to her. The piano “heartbeat” of the song he had been sitting on for years, and after seeing Prince live he returned to his hotel room where he had a piano delivered and put the two together. It’s a piano/keyboard/synth driven song of admiration for another, and Prince removed all of those elements, stripping it down to a self-indulgent funk number which I think showcases just how good a songwriter Scott is. Prince stripped it of everything that’s loved about the original and didn’t rob anything, he simply borrowed the amazing songwriting of Scott (I like to hope) to pay tribute to him.

Saw the same tour but in Birmingham. Yep, they blew U2 away to the point where U2 were boring in comparison.

Absolute gold, this is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. And yes, Pan Within, Trumpets, Fishermans Blues, Winter Winter, Glastonbury, Return of Pan, Man is in Love .... on and on. Go see them if it's the last thing you do. Fills my soul.

The current line up is pretty awesome, I saw them on Saturday. True brilliance. No strings or brass but the keyboardist more than makes up for that. Mike Scott is in top form. 2022

Dear Serge, International politics are a messy place. Russia and the EU and US are not getting along that well right now. But it is important to look back sometimes - 70 years ago we stood together against a great enemy. Much of the freedom of western Europe has been paid for by Russian blood. Very sad that some forget this. My granddad was taken to Germany as slave labour while my grandmom and her children (with my dad) were left to face famine in Holland in 1944-5. My mom's family were a little better of but suffered too. None of that compares to being a teenage storm trooper but maybe there is a common threat. The average working man and woman usually pays the most in games played by the powerful. Many thanks to your granddad - I am sure I would have liked to have a meal and a drink with him - God bless him.

By the way - my granddad never talked about his slavery during the war. But it was clear he HATED Germans until the day he died.

Wanted to see them for years and finally they were the last band i saw before COVID hit, at the Majestic in Detroit. Best live music i have ever seen. Hands down.

They're still out there. I've been listening to them since the early 80s and never got a chance to see them until 2015. Thought it was never going to happen - but it was worth the wait and a 900 mile trip to Atlanta. Keep a good thought!

Great band, they were a bit before time but I'm gettin into them more and more. I also had no clue they were from edinburgh, my home city until about 3 months ago.

That's mad as i was born in Scotland in Ayr but came to England as a young child but my son's mum came from Glasgow she lived in cambas lang.but the Waterboys are a great band i also like a girl called Jonny and the Pan within and many more best regards 🤗

Paul Weller stands out as the best singer,songwriter but Mike Scott comes a close second especially singing "spirit' and "The whole of the moon".

I agree with you the sax is on another level you just don't get music like this anymore so sad but I'm so glad that i was brought up through the 70s and 80s when music was real

songhunter1966 That's correct. You can see the sticker from German broadcaster ZDF on the camera at 2:22. They played these 4 songs: www.concertarchiv.net/Rockpop-1984-3.htm#WATERBOYS. I got a maxi record of those 4 songs which they sold under the counter at my local record shop at the time, and played it all day long. Never forget.
