In this video we're checking out The Waterboys. We did a tribute to Karl Wallinger the other day, and you guys insisted that we check this song out. We know, nothing about this band, save Karl, but if you guys think it's worthy of our attention, how can we say no? Let's give it a listen. Enjoy!

I remember this being played on the radio, in 1889, when I was 16. Waiting for it to be played and the batteries on my walkman, running out!

Great reaction! Karl Wallinger was a multi instrumentalist, he could play anything. But in the Waterboys he played “the keys” and sang a bit. All the World Party albums are pure gold. Pop euphoria, gorgeous melodies, stunningly produced and performed. He even incorporated a bit of the philosopher Bertrand Russells writing in the song “Is It Like Today?” from the BANG album. RIP Karl, you are sorely missed. Cheers 🍺

In a 2020 interview, Scott specifically rejected claims that it was about Nikki Sudden or Prince: he said that he wrote a message "on the record's label saying, 'For Prince, U saw the whole of the moon'" as a reference to discussions between himself and Karl Wallinger about creating a Prince-inspired sound when they were recording the song.

First time I heard this song was watching Countdown back in 1985. The usual pop music clips and popstar interviews was filling up the show, when suddenly like a comet, this song came blazing its trail on the tele; consequently, climbing on the ladder of the Australian charts to number 12. The same story applies to World Party's ''Ship Of Fools''. It was nice to have something popular that was not heavily driven by synths and electronic drums.

This has long been a go to song for me when I need a blast of life-affirming music. By no means where you stop with The Waterboys though; their album Fisherman's Blues is my favorite with the title song, "We Will Not be Lovers", and a song called "World Party" just to name a few as must hears. Great upload.

That’s the late Karl Wallinger from world party on keyboards - he left not longer after this to go on his own , Mike Scott is the lead singer and main man in the Waterboys - really good song this 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Deserving of its legendary status. Saw them do this in concert at the Porstmouth Guildall in the UK. Maybe 1989. Very special gig ❤❤ Overall a song to my youth. 😊

It’s a great song! I think part of its success was it stood out , being released in a time with a lot new wavy synth driven pop.

Initially only a modest hit in 1985 this was re-released in 1991 & reached # 3 in the UK 🇬🇧 charts. The video is from 1985. It's on the excellent This Is The Sea album & is a feel good anthem to this day. Be hearing this in the pubs on Sunday 🍀 !

It was quite a big hit in Australia in 1985. I think this and ''Ship Of Fools'' were the last two songs that the Countdown kids put a considerable amount of effort in backing before they all called it a day, and just left their organisation to die. Both songs might have been just moderate hits in Australia if those kids didn't use their disintegrating muscle.

Sorry guys I don’t get the Prince thing at all , they were leaning more to a Celtic folk vibe in general, but that will become obvious if you dive into other hits they had - like Fisherman’s Blues 😅- the members changed frequently , with Mike Scott being the constant 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Love the Waterboys....you really should check out their "Dream Harder" album.....seriously good,with diverse styles of songs ranging from rockers to the more folky sound people expect.....heavily influenced by a pagan/ spiritual theme.....also Mike Scotts solo opus " "bring em all in"....is an acoustic masterpiece. 👏👏....as far as underrated albums go....Dream Harder is the of the best....its worth checking for the track " The return of Pan" on its own!!

Fantastic reaction. At a time when UK was going in Balearic rave / and aceed. / so bit off. Huge in Ireland. Dublin at that time Fat lady sings / arc light Emotional Fish - celebrate Aslan - crazy world Golden Horde/maria mckee / friends in time. Last one with lone star Maria a good intro in hippy Dublin 1989.

This is a strange (to me) mix - distinctly different to the album version. The opening song on the album this comes from, Don't Bang The Drum, starts with a magnificent trumpet fanfare, tempting you to turn it up, only to be deafened when the song proper crashes in. It's quite a trip!

I much prefer the earlier version personally, it doesnt have the fiddle part or the girl doing the high harmony iirc. But, great song, interesting band. And A Bang On The Ear, is recommended! I used to know a girl who went out with The Waterboys sax player! Irrelevant fact for you!

Unfortunately, Iva Davies/Icehouse tried to ride on the ''Whole Of The Moon'' wave with a song called ''Miss Divine''. Very derivative of this number.

this version is slightly different to the album/radio version and as much as i enjoy this track, it is my least favourite from the album - probably because it is the single and 40 years on it still gets radio play here in New Zealand. their track 'The Pan Within' is a great track and possibly the best off the album but really it's a The Whole Of The Album experience. it's in my top 10 albums of all time.
