Have you read The Way of Kings? Do you plan to?

I first listened to TWOK sitting behind a 7/11 while I was penniless in a foreign country. That might inform how much I love this book. But beyond that there's just so much to chew on in this book. I love that he makes his characters struggle with their moral decisions and think it out to a logical conclusion so he can fit interesting philosophical questions in without it feeling preachy. But above all, watching Kaladin decide not to give up on life and saving himself and the rest of Bridge 4 from their own despair is the single most inspiring thing I've read

I just finished this book and wow how it helped me through a depression swing!(I’m bipolar) “life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination.” Really hit home for me. @@nolanschmidt1065 Honestly I feel like you can read 1-3 without too much supplemental material. @@QuestLegacy And I'm back! How was that only two weeks?? I feel like I lost my entire life into this book. It was even better than I expected (coming straight from Mistborn) and I can't wait to dive into Words of Radiance. I have too many emotions and thoughts and questions. So many questions. I had similar reactions to you on many of the characters and plot points and absolutely loving all the characters at this point. I need to know *everything.* But I just continue to be amazed by the worldbuilding. I didn't mind the slower sections of this book because every line is packed with worldbuilding details. I loved learning about all the animals and plants and societies and religions and just, everything. Like for example, how they worry about washing hands before treating patients and cleaning wounds to avoid attracting rotspren because that means there's an infection. It's such a small detail, but I was fascinated by how they came to similar conclusions as us in science and medicine but by using completely different reasons. It seems like they see rotspren as the actual infection rather than rotspren being attracted to an infection? So interesting. (I also have many questions about spren in general but who doesn't at this point?) I would literally read several encyclopedias about this world and its cultures and history. Can I be Jasnah's new ward pls???

Hi Michael, Your enthusiasm for this series which happens to be my favourite is so infectious. I love the Stormlight archive and the way of Kings is such an amazing introduction to it. There are so amazing scenes and characters. Kal and his brother was so touching. Shallon getting herself in such a tangle, especially considering this was the first time she spent away from her farther's estate. Dalinar feeling like he is going mad but wants to change the culture of the Elethy. Czeth having to follow the instructions given to him because of his oath stone. The Shattered plains, Spren, Parshendy, magic system, Bridge 4, and the book The way of kings itself. All so many interesting facets to such an amazing book.

This book saved my sanity in the pandemic. Before The Stormlight Archive, I had only read LotR and A Song of Ice and Fire several years ago, but Sanderson has single-handedly convinced me to dive back into the fantasy genre. Without the perspective of reading many other fantasy authors, I feel like I’m not able to fully appreciate how masterful The Way of Kings truly is. But my gut tells me The Stormlight Archive will go down as one the greatest fantasy series of all time when it’s finished. Words of Radiance was equally awesome. Just starting Oathbringer now, but I can’t wait to finally read more about Dalinar’s past. Btw love the review, and I just subscribed!

Sanderson is my favorite author by a fairly significant margin. I fell in love with Mistborn first, and then read everything else he ever published. Will watch the rest of the video after I've read the book. As for the multiple beginnings - as a seasoned reader of fantasy and SF I really don't mind that. Actually I don't see what the problem is. Multiple POV, timelines, and/or locations have always been a struggle for me. I spend more mental energy trying to keep track of who's talking, when/where we are, and it distracts me from the story. I know a lot of people with that struggle. It is something I tend to enjoy, but I can see the frustration! I agree about this book though. The Alethi are actually wrong about a lot of stuff. I don't want to spoil anything, but if want to know what actually happens in the afterlife, you have to read Mistborn: Secret History. After you've read Mistborn, of course. Most people say you have to read through Bands of Mourning first, but I am of the opinion that it is better to read it after the original trilogy but before the second. But I can't explain why I don't think Secret History spoils BoM without spoiling the whole thing anyway, so it's hard to make my case on that one.

@@QuestLegacy Mistborn is awesome; although, Sanderson's writing has improved since the series came out (you should still like it, though). It was written before he even worked on The Wheel of Time--a job that *really* improved his skills. If you don't know that whole story, you might be interested to know that The Stormlight Archive would never have happened (the way it did, anyway) without The Wheel of Time. Most publishers (SFF/fantasy publishers, anyway) rely on their big names to carry the entire company--sometimes, a single author is the source of most of their income. WoT was Tor's big series, and they were in a real panic when Robert Jordan died. When Sanderson took over, and The Gathering Storm sold really well, Tor was overjoyed and ready to give him anything he wanted. So he said, "Well, I've got this massively ambitious 10-book series that I've been planning for 20 years..." and that's how we got 1,000+ page volumes with full-color endpapers, internal art, and covers painted by Michael Whelan. All of that is very expensive. Michael Whelan doesn't even do sci-fi and fantasy novel covers anymore, except for very special occasions (like the final WoT book because the cover artist also died before he could complete the series). It was that special moment that made Stormlight possible. By the time Sanderson was on the 2nd or 3rd of the WoT books he worked on, Tor was over their panic. Someone would have stood in the way of all the expensive goodies we get in Stormlight books. But because the series started up at that perfect time, we got the great product that we have.

This is a good review. You missed a major side character, The King's Wit, he has some of the best dialogues in the whole Stormlight Archives (probably best). I hope he meets dalinar again, in RoW, cause that would be a moment, i can tell you. The reason this book is mind blowing, is not only does it sets the tone, introduces the world and characters and has an amazing plot, it as a complete and absolutly contained story of a group of slaves caught between rock and a hard place and the only way they survive is to go head first against all odds. I'd say, you could read TWoK, leave it there don't touch any of the other SA books and you'd be happy with it. That's something i don't see often, the complete package. That's why this books is long, but that's just a number, it doesn't matter. And the moment Kaladin decides to go back and help Dalinar is the pay day for us fantasy fans. And Sanderson is a master when it comes to delivering such moments. You'll see there are at least 3 more moments like that one by the end of the Oathbringer. I guess, people have made good living for delivering one such moment in their writing. Cant wait for you to read WoR and Oathbringer, i'd like to see how your feellings for the series evolve.

After reading this book back in 2016 I spent like two days being all giddy and giggly. I could not contain my joy that I had managed to read a book so ambitious. It was my favorite book for two years until I managed to read The Words of Radiance too, but Words of Radiance not only is a better constructed book in my opinion than Way of Kings, but it also holds an emotional value for me as it was the book that managed to drag me out of my own depression. Unlike the time I finished the Way of Kings, when I finished Words of Radiance, because I was depressed I felt nothing. And when I realized that I started bawling my eyes out that a story that I enjoyed coming back to did not have me giddy and excited anymore. A month after finishing the book I was visiting my older sister and I had a dream about the Stormlight Archive (mainly figuring out where the world of Warbreaker would fit if it was part of Roshar) and it was actually the first impulse that fully got me out of my depression because it was the first dream I remembered in MONTHS! I owe this series a lot, not just for giving me an immersive story and world to explore, but also because it saved me.

@@QuestLegacy I'm not referring to any specific event, but the reading experience as a whole. I enjoyed reading WoR it was a much needed break from my depression and I did genuinely feel, for instance, the epicness of the clash between Szeth and Kaladin. But once the book was over and I knew that my depression will keep me from feeling anything afterwards (like, say, the joy I felt after reading WoK) I started to bawl so hard that it took my twin sis half an hour to convince me to go to work that day, I was crying my heart out because I was feeling nothing, except my usual depressed apathy. That slowly changed, because I think somewhere subconsciously WoR triggered my will to fight for myself again and managed in the end to help me overcome months of sadness and apathy. It still hurts me thinking about it, but I'm glad I read WoR else I probably would have been depressed to this very day (that happened in 2018).

A lot of people really don't like flashbacks. I generally don't mind them but in this book I loved them. Every single one was straight to the purpose and directly relating to what was going on. I also loved them because I love Kaladin of course :D SPOILERS The reveal that God is dead was the most unexpected moment for me. And it opens up so many questions and could lead in so many directions. I need to get my hands on Words of Radiance. Wait... Shallan has a shardblade? How the hell did I miss that? That last battle in the book was so awesome and satisfying to read. And Kaladin meeting Dalinar and Adolin... just great! I also loved how Dalinar went to Elhokar and just told him how it's going to be.
@QuestLegacy
@QuestLegacy 3 жыл бұрын
Yessss! The god is dead part was so shocking for me as well! As far as the shardblade goes - It definitely feels subtle because there is so much information being thrown at you at once, but upon reread it is actually hinted at a few times. In one instance there is a quote about Shallan's greatest sin being "ten heartbeats away" and another scene where she is frightened and holds out her hand to summon it. An early chapter also has her in a panicky moment have the memory "It still felt odd to her that she been the one to take charge after… After the incident… After… Memories attacked her. Nan Balat bruised, his coat torn. A long, silvery sword in her hand, sharp enough to cut stone as if they were water."

But as a cycle of Desolation approaches to destroy humanity, four people will play key roles in the outcome: Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar, assassinates King Gavilar and begins a cycle of vengeance-the “Vengeance Pact”-between two races. He weeps as he is forced to kill for his masters. Kaladin Stormblessed, an apprentice surgeon, is forced to become a soldier in the armies fighting for vengeance. After suffering the betrayal of a “light-eyed" noble, this dark-eyed soldier fights for his life and that of his dark-eyed crew. Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands an army like the one that employs Kaladin. But as he is drawn to an ancient text of law, The Way of Kings, he finds himself questioning the purpose of this war. Young Shallan Davar, Brightness of a small, struggling estate, risks everything to plan a daring theft. The first step of her plan is to train as a scholar with the heretic Jasnah Kholin, Brightlord Dalinar Kholin’s niece; but as she gains Jasnah’s trust, she realizes that the woman studies much more than obscure academia: she studies the secrets of the fabled order of the Knights Radiant, their shards and the Desolations they fought so long ago. Adult High Fantasy Published August 31st 2010 by Tor Books. My Thoughts: Wow. 1,000 pages of wow. Just let me fangirl for a moment, here. Don’t let the size of this tome fool you: The Way of Kings is a compulsively readable, highly character-driven high fantasy. The characters always let you know what they want; but you never know what twists lay in store for them. And there are so many twists! They start coming early on. It’s almost funny how I continue to guess and theorize because I’m always totally wrong. Everything is sailing along as the characters expect, and then BAM! You weren’t getting comfortable, were you? Because this guy’s being sold into slavery and this gal’s not the naïve young bookworm you thought. You think you know what’s going on? Trust me, you don’t. I can’t talk overmuch about the plot without spoilers, but: I dare you to get bored during a Kaladin scene. Seriously. I bet you can’t do it. Early on in the novel, he’s drafted into a hellish portion of the army known as “bridge duty” (wherein generals force crews of unarmed men to rush first into battle, set bridges across chasms and draw enemy fire away from the “real” soldiers) and his goal becomes one thing and one thing only: keep his bridge crew alive. He constantly schemes up crazy ideas to meet that goal, and I promise, it’s worth your time to read The Way of Kings just for this one innovative soldier’s arc. But Dalinar Kholin’s arc is a close second favorite. Uncle to the king and brother of the slain King Gavilar, Dalinar dominates the battlefield. Known as the Blackthorn, he fiercely wields a weapon called a “Shardblade,” a giant sword with unimaginably destructive power. As the book’s description says, wars are fought for and won by these ancient, mysterious weapons that appear from mist and kill souls as easily as they kill bodies. Dalinar is a cultural hero among his war-obsessed countrymen-but he has lately been troubled by Highstorm visions that may or may not be the onset of madness. As everyone including his sons and the king begin to question him, Dalinar has to navigate the visions, public opinion and private family business. A complex man with a complex path. I’m totally obsessed with Dalinar. I think Shallan’s arc qualifies as the most complex among the four main narrators. She possesses the potential and desire to become a great scholar, but family secrets close that option to her. While innovation and leadership concerns characterize the narratives of Kaladin and Dalinar, Shallan’s narrative blossoms more slowly, and it feels almost self-contained until we find out more about Jasnah's research. Nevertheless, I love Shallan's scenes. Her intelligence and ambition make her arc tense and painful, at times, but always twisty and keenly satisfying. Szeth the assassin is the most mysterious of the four narrators, but I suspect that he holds the secret to the coming Desolations. We shall see. The worldbuilding itself is like a fabulous character. It’s so BIG! And it feels that way, paradoxically, by detailing the small stuff. “Kaladin stared out over those grasses blowing in the mild breeze. Whenever the wind picked up, the more sensitive of the grass stalks shrank down into their burrows, leaving the landscape patchy, like the coat of a sickly horse.” Although we expect large amounts of setup and worldbuilding in a novel like this, Sanderson incorporates it all smoothly into the secretive and engrossing characters arcs. The swords, the storms, the mysterious “stormlight” that connects everything together…and don't even get me started on the countries, social prejudices and religions! One society lives on an endless, shallow lake, and citizens just...stay wet. All the time. And Alethi men and women must eat gender-specified foods! It's craziness. The smooth writing let me slip easily into the world of Roshar, never drawing attention to itself. I got lost in this engrossing giant of a novel. When plot twists pay off-when the action starts-it's explosive. This is totally cliché, but the battle scenes really are heart-rending and pulse-pounding. Very “visually” effective (better than Mistborn’s action scenes, I would say). The tactics and strategy are extremely well drawn. I switched back and forth between the audiobook and the hardcover copy, so I can confirm that the story reads easily in both. Hearing all the unique names pronounced with such assurance made the audio version a favorite with me; but the easy writing makes the hard copy equally as engrossing-and the illustrations! They’re gorgeous! Overall: Combines the intrigue of Elantris with the action and themes of Mistborn X1000. It’s definitely my favorite thing by Sanderson, as yet. As I was reading, I kept wishing the book could last forever. Thankfully, 9,000 is a conservative estimate of pages remaining in the series, right? Recommended To: It sometimes feels like I was the last person to this Stormlight Archives partaaay, but I know that’s not true! If you like character-driven fantasy, I highly recommend trying TWOK. You might be surprised how the pages fly by, once you start to get to know the characters.

Christy Luis - Dostoevsky in Space love and totally agree with your review! I feel the same way. Totally fanning out even though I just found it. It seems so premature, but it isn’t lessening with time. I’m so looking forward to book 2 now!!

I've wanted to be a writer since I was very, very young. Unfortunately I drifted away from writing, but I would love to get back to it. I'm so nervous about starting though so I haven't really taken the leap yet!

Michael Knipp NaNoWriMo might be a good time to try it out (it’s a blast!), but it sounds like you’re doing a lot of other creative awesomeness + you know Family! I need to check out this “Wack Matters” thing you’ve mentioned a couple of times. Will do so ASAP!

One of us! One of us! SPOILERS: I teared up like hell when Bridge 4 decided to go back for Dalinar. What a powerful moment. And then him upholding his promise, giving up Oathbringer to save them... It felt so earned too! To see that loyalty and will to fight for others from bridgemen, after all they had gone through. To see Dalinar staying truthful to the Codes. Sanderson is the true master of the third act.

I am planning to read The Stormlight Archive once I finish Wheel of Time which won't be until next year. But the hype surrounding this book is massive which makes me nervous but also very curious to see how it goes. I am currently reading The original Mistborn trilogy (book 2 currently) so I can get a sense of Brandon Sanderson in his early writing to when he wrote Stromlight.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on Stormlight when you get to it! But also, no pressure. Sometimes there can be so much hype or pressure for something that it can strongly effect your thoughts going in. If you love it, that's awesome! And if you don't, its not for everyone and that's cool too!

@@QuestLegacy I'm still very excited because so far I do like Mistborn, but I think I'll like Stormlight so much more. I cannot wait to read it and chat about Stormlight with people.
