I feel like ped-areas should best be used for shopping centers and should be limited to one large main road and a few smaller branching roads. And they're perfect as a seaside boulevard combined with the new seaside expansion. That's the most veracious in my humble opinion.

Yeah. It's not realistic to have very high occupancy office buildings with no vehicle access. Imagine the IT buildings with consultants and engineers having to park a big way away and then having to schlep it to and fro all day and night. On call, or going to off-site visits to customers. Those nerds are going to be exhausted. 😅 Also, if offices are mostly empty at night, thus with so few people around, workers wouldn't be happy to be in such a large pedestrian area with few 'witnesses' around should anything untoward happen. Having shared retail and residential would mitigate this fact and allow for larger continuous pedestrian zones, as there would be more people around at all hours than offices alone. That makes big pedestrian areas feasible in the real world. You would never see a huge pedestrianised office-only space, especially with no 'back access', like some kind of alley and underground/highrise parking. The offices would just issue permits to limit the number of drivers to disabled people (big problem if there's no car access), the bigwigs, and engineers or travelling workers, also maybe nighttime workers.

I think this video shows how difficult it is to change an already planned zone to a pedestrian area. There are so many things to reconsider. I can imagine it would be easier to plan a new neighborhood with everything in mind regarding a pedestrian zone. It's really cool though. Great video as always!!

@@croozerdog Yeah I was thinking about the game mechanics. But sure, Amsterdam has changed. But to get there, it took waaaaaaaaaaay too long. Keep in mind that you don't have to use pedestrian roads in a pedestrian area. At several points in this video you seemed to be avoiding extending the pedestrian area beyond the small section that you wanted to pedestrianize, but then you had to do so anyhow because of the need to place the service points along a regular road.

One thing i noticed, why keep the old pathways, when all roads are now paths. All the old paths should be changed as well. Plus certain roads you dead-ended instead of making a junction, can now be junctions, because you won't have the traffic issue. Always great to watch you create. 👍

@@BillinhoBamford Old towns with tiny roads benefit from restricted access to cut down overwhelming traffic and resultant congestion, but not fully pedestrianised. You just have to have access for service and delivery vehicles, and disabled drivers. You can stick in pedestrian only streets around the place, just with regular access roads inbetween and around the backs of places. Some places in the UK do it pretty well where I've been, but I suck with names, so can't really suggest any to look at. 🙂

Hey Biffa, when you're not recording would you check out how the wall-to-wall buildings grow in. It seems like you have the same issue as me where zoning a certain block to be that specialization, there seem to be gaps that never grow in. It would be dumb that we would have to manually fill in the gap or take away zoning to make a w2w building grow in a 2x4 block and a 3x3 block (you'll see that in between your buildings as well). It seems like the only sizes available in the new buildings are 2x2 and 3x2, which should force themselves into those spaces, even if it leaves "empty" zoning behind them. Does that make sense, I figured you have better connections to Colossal than I do. These w2w buildings should really grow in when we're using them as intended, vanilla style.

P&P pedestrian zones will only work for a relatively short while. After a period, the garbage collections will cease - both from Service Centres and normal city facilities. The city will die. This doesn't appear to be related to a mod, and it's being reported fairly widely. I had it yesterday and had to remove all pedestrian areas from the map to restart garbage collections. It would appear that the devs need to get a fix out.

But I'm really loving how you're transforming an existing area but preserving as much as you can!
@bladactania
@bladactania Жыл бұрын
When you are converting the roads within your pedestrian area (the IT section), you only replaced existing roads with the new pedestrian streets. However, the roads were designed with cars in mind and minimizing intersections. So you have a lot of dead end streets that terminate just shy of a nearby road. While not having excessive intersections on a normal road is good, for pedestrian streets, it's not. People don't want to have to all around an entire block to get to something that's mere steps away from them. In real life, they'd just cut through the grass or alleyway. So I think you need to connect all these pedestrian roads in as many ways as possible to make walking between two points as efficient as possible.

Entertaining AND educational, as always... As you're looking into making your cities more realistic, you may want to look into "sky water management" policies and regulations. Because currently the ratio of paved vs unpaved is way too high in your new district. If the game would be realistic on weather, you would be getting a bunch of sewage floods every time a cloud rolls by... Modern city planners take into account rainfall when deciding on new paved surfaces, and compensate either with water features that would be fed with the excess water (like fountains or ponds) or with unpaved surfaces that would not only allow rain to soak in rather than run off to a sewer, but would also be carrying water thirsty trees in order to make those areas act like a sponge for rain water. Such types of trees also have the beneficial effect of cooling the air and regulating the air humidity in the area, which also reduces the penetration of fine dust originating from other parts of the city where cars are still roaming the streets tossing up all sorts of particles in the dry air. So placing large lush trees densely near the edges of a pedestrian zone would create a natural air filtering barrier that would make the pedestrian zone much nicer. Placing them scattered across the pedestrian zone will in turn provide a stable atmosphere for your pedestrians, protect them from hot weather and keep them outdoors longer, making them produce more vitamin D and thus be happier... City planning is a matter of public health nowadays :-) Of course, non of this is required in the game, but if you want to go realistic, then there you go :)

It would’ve been nice if the developer did it. I understand the reason behind no integrated tram/pedestrian path is because trams were not included in the main game and not everyone has the Snowfall DLC which introduced trams. Maybe they could’ve added trams to the main game prior to releasing the Plazas and Promenades DLC so everyone had trams and then a tram/ped path would’ve been possible to add. I’m building a new city with two large pedestrian areas and I had to use the tram roads available to go through my pedestrian area.

@@teddynielsen Snowfall was arguable one of the weakest DLCs and Trams were definitely the best part of it. Just annoying there isn't more compatibility between the DLCs for transport links. Fair point that the tram roads work, though having them running through the new pedestrian areas would look far, far better. They're my go-tos for transport in my cities, with monorail for high-traffic areas to take the pressure away from the roads themselves

I think a simple way for these walkways to be more realistic is to instead of the over powered service area, they should implement a back door for commercial and industrial so you can have a service road on the back side building and the pedestrian walk up front. Or maybe a rule that cims could enter a building from the back if it's connected to a pathway. I think I get the idea of it, to make a mall type area where garbage services are in a particular part. Maybe animate janitors that go around like garbage trucks in the pedestrian areas and maybe require players to place enough trash receptacles to handle the foot traffic in the area.

I ran into the "type of road" thing with bridges as well. I think it is trying to put the connection node ON the bridge, and the road doesn't support that or something to that effect. I was able to fix it by moving the intersection slightly.

Hey Biffa, Mississipatea is such a great name. But.....i really miss some more area related things in your city as long it´s not just that brilliant name. I mentioned Steam river Boats with that large wheel on the back cause you got so many rivers there on your map and as you´re planting trees on your new pedestrian roads, I miss those typical trees from the Mississippi area... love and light Cheech

I haven't bought this DLC, but this pedestrian only roads is one of the main things I was missing in the game, since IRL many cities have some central streets converted to pedestrian areas with plazas and service vehicle access. Not sure when I'm going to be able to buy and play with it, but I'll have to limit myself since the mechanics behind teleporting goods and trash are kinda broken.

The Lilac pedestrian are should just be renamed the "Riverside business district" or for a NYC style flavor just call it the "central business district"

I loved when you made commercial with "walking" roads and there were normal roads in that district as well l. It just seemed realistic.

"Wall to wall" but you could probably fit a 1u road between a lot of the buildings. I am very ambivalent with this plazas and promenades dlc, there's a lot that I love of and a lot that I hate

Weird that the peds walk on the Ped roads through the trees rather than walking down the middle of the road like you would in real life. Its like they they're treating it like a normal road.
