The gun-wielder I'm most curious about is May. Most operators seem to treat her as somewhat of a joke, but she's able to wield a pistol without the backing of a major corporation. Her profile also states she doesn't have much combat experience (0.5 years). This makes her somewhat of an outlier.

I'd like to note more things in this comment - Franka's rapier was initially mentioned to have been made by Raythean in a stream, but this was voided and overall a short-lived idea. - Savage's hammer is actually considered to be a weird staff cosplaying as a hammer. Even Savage herself does not understand this. Even so, when we look at many of the Arts-boosted weapons, we could apply a similar logic? - Chainsaws are often thought of in media to act as a really dangerous weapon, but they're super impractical for such purpose in real use. If Terra successfully made chainsaws work to the point where even someone like Popukar can use them, then it's no wonder that the apex of rippers happen to be physically outstanding. - Crossbows. The staple of every ranged guy in Arknights. As you have mentioned, they come in varied shapes and sizes so the real determining factor of a good crossbow is how you use it. The crossbows used by the likes of Schwarz and Faust are built around brute strength (this also includes the big ones from the Sarkaz mercenaries, which may as well be ballistas at this point), while others may be noted for their rapid-fire, quick reloading or split-shooting (firing two or more bolts at the same time). According to a future event in Arknights (Vigilo), Columbia specializes around automatic crossbows (with the criminal background of Siracusan gangs, it's no wonder that they can get their hands on these). The premise around an automatic crossbow is simple: full-auto mechanisms and usually a big mag, unless the user can magically reload bolts fast enough (I imagine it must be very tiring depending on the rate). Furthermore, Columbia employs the same full-auto crossbows (if not bigger) onto armored vehicles and if something like a ballista turret can be made by someone with the military background of an insurgent movement, then a professional force can achieve so much more. Meteorite might be using something closely resembling a bowgun, but it is easy to imagine that bolts can be customized to feature a plethora of ammunition types, such as explosive or poisonous. - Firearms. Arguably the most difficult type to talk about, everyone should know they're not guns as we know guns. They're staves firing smaller staves, as both the guns and the bullets have casting units. While their individual requirement of affinity is small, the mental fortitude and focus required to properly handle a gun without any backfires is something that only the Sankta or individuals with the respective Arts training can provide. Grenade launchers, I suppose they do not tax so much on Arts affinity like guns do. We see people like Catapult and Sesa use them, the latter case actually managing to modify his weapon in order to make it even less taxing on his affinity. The renegade Sarkaz, W, can be seen with two weapons in her art (if we look at her bedroom set, she deposits multiple), but she exclusively uses explosives. As W is a Sarkaz, it's natural for her to have a pretty good affinity. Sadly, her level does not allow her to use guns so we cannot have Miss 6th AR. Oh yeah, if you were to bring a gun from Earth and compare it with a Terran parallel, Earth guns are individually stronger, but still weaker than bows and crossbows. * To attach something else in this paragraph, Sarkaz were particularly noted for their high affinity to Arts. We also learn that the Sankta are born with genius-level Arts. Could this be another connecting point to the ARSE theory where it's these species who have a generally high affinity towards Arts? - Honorable mentions: Absinthe, Jackie, and a couple more weapons that look like guns. Absinthe's case is simple - it's a revolver shaped staff with a casting unit. Why does it look like a revolver? I'd rather let you read her story. Jackie, the Perro brawler with a knack for punching - in her Operator profile, she is given a gun-shaped casting unit. It's useless for her beyond decoration, she just wants to punch people. Emperor's Li'l Homie (obviously based on the Desert Eagle) is in fact a cardboard slingshot customized to fire rubber bullets at a very high velocity. Andreana's "sniper rifle" (based on the Arctic Warfare) is in fact a crossbow firing inkballs (? or bolts with modified ammunition?) made to cosplay as a Laterano firearm. Why? Iberia's religion fanaticism. It might just be the Iberian step-up of Laterano's religion, but religious statues in such churches feature guns. Does that make guns a religious icon in this parallel portrayal of Catholicism? Yeah. Less exaggerated in the eyes of Laterano, I imagine. Overall, this video has done a great job in informing lore enthusiasts and casual players alike how your individual Terran uses weapons, and I'm looking forward to see your video regarding warfare as a whole. Stay awesome.

My take on why Terra hasn't developed gunpowder weapons isn't because Terra is technologically challenged in that area, but because of environmental and cultural reasons. 1. Terrans are physically stronger than humans, So they can make more powerful crossbows with pull weights that would not be practical on Earth, making guns less significant of a technological leap. 2. Most of Terran development is centered around mobile cities. Rural, agricultural communities are generally less developed, and as a result, do not have the industrial farming infrastructure we have. What does farming have to do with guns? Nitrate primers. Production of nitrate primers on Earth got a big boost when the Haber-Bosch process to fix atmospheric nitrogen was developed, a process that was invented to mass produce industrial fertilizer. 3. Originium poisoning. "Gunpowder" on Earth is mainly divided into black powder (older) and nitrocellulose formulations. Black powder wouldn't have the energy to cycle Rainbow 6's automatic weapons, but even disregarding that, the saltpeter on Terra is probably contaminated with Originium. As for nitrocellulose, barring chemical production of nitrogenated compounds (see point 2), one of the main sources for nitrocellulose on Earth in older days was guncotton. Just as with the rest of Terra, the plants in Arknights probably have a baseline level of Originium contamination. In both black powder and guncotton cases, concentrating and refining the raw ingredients and them igniting them as a fine powder would probably release a lot of Originium dust that would be dangerous to the user, essentially giving them Originium poisoning with prolonged use.

Snipers that use gun in Arknights are just casters that deal physical damage.

The crossbows and bows used in Arknights was known to have much stronger bowstrings. R6S event did mention that Tachanka barely fully pull Ranger's bow's string. It makes sense that most crossbows and bows used in Arknights are exceedingly more powerful due to the increased bowstring strength that can generate more force. As for the reason why gunpowder is never invented, chemical difference is the indeed the biggest key to whether it can be achieved or not. Still, the "gunpowder" we normally associated with are actually smokeless powder. While black powder is used since 11th or 13th century, smokeless powder is only discovered in 1847 and then perfected in 1884. Roughly 700 to 500 years later. I would say even if they discovered black powder, they will still use Arts-based explosive since they are already in use and much stronger or just use crossbows and bows since they deliver the same result. Unless they manage to jump right into smokeless powder, the chance of black powder finding interests will be low. Or, Laterano had put on a gag order on any research on firearm-related field. Probably the latter. A footnote for the guns we see used by operators we recruited (or at least based on weapons we know in real life) excluding R6S operators: Ambriel = Lee-Enfield No. Mk. 1 rifle as basic with M1917 Enfield and L42A1 parts and a modified magazine. Catapult = M320 grenade launcher Executor = Winchester Model 1887 shotgun Exusiai = KRISS Vector SMG (.45ACP or 9mm? IDK), pimped M4A1 with a Daniel Defense handguard (probably) in E2 Jessica = Berretta M9 pistol, Glock 17 SAI pistol (very gucci) Liskarm = Glock 17(?) pistol (no way knowing exact Glock model) Franka = Glock 19(?) pistol (no way knowing exact Glock model) W = MK18 carbine, grenade launcher based off from RG-6 grenade launcher Andreana = Crossbow based off from Accuracy International AW Jackie = Unknown due to hidden in holster but probably based off from C96 pistol Tell me if I miss anything. Curious about what guns that based off in real life appeared in Arknights.

Oh firearms, once again HG is just teasing its players by not giving us a story about what Laterano is and how its society and governance works.

Anything sharp and stabby is straightforward they cut and stab sometimes with arts. Bows and Crossbows are Bows and Crossbows depending on the race the draw weight can vary to have more power. Guns are built different to accommodate their ammo. Ammo for these guns are essentially miniature wands or staves which takes arts and a lot of practice to get it to discharge. The R6 team's guns which are regular earth guns now use specialized munitions with originium dust as a substitute for modern smokeless powder used in modern cartridges although it has less power don't be mistaken it can still blow a hole into someone's head. At least the r6 gang has a supply of munitions now for their journey around Terra.

Did everyone remember how a late teenager Kuranta like Catapult can use real grenade launcher despite neither a Sankta nor a member of Blacksteel? I think since she got infection, she got arts focus training and she realized her arts are powerful enough that she able to launch grenade launcher.

"Guns are Staves with extra steps" has the same energy as Destiny's "A sword is a wand that casts two spells; parry and cut." I remember thinking about the idea of weapons that are designed to inflict oripathy, like a blade coated in originium powder (similar to a sharpening steel coated in diamond dust) so you'd be liable to contract acute oripathy if you got cut but managed to escape alive, since infected tend to be cast out by their peers so it'd be an effective way to break a person's social/ political standing as a plan b for a failed assassination, but apparently a very sizable number of weapons already are made of originium so I wonder if that's already a common thing in Terra.

I know how Rosa's weapon works. It works occasionally. ;-)

If guns work like a casting unit, then it's not too far off for Columbia (America) in alliance with Laterano to make railguns out of Originium Arts, and it technically is a magical railgun once you learn the basics of the crystal For all I know, if there's a Sankta that is physically buffed and is good with Arts, some things like the railgun or heavier machine guns like the ones Heavy has from TF2 is not too far off, and it would be one of the most overpowered units in lore

This is the thing that drives me crazy about the world building... how do the guns work? Like sure they use originium arts yadda yadda, but how do automatic guns cycle? Is there a detonation that propels the bullet and provides the gas/recoil that operates it, or do they actually have an arts based mechanism to operate the bolt? How do the triggers work?

My guess why they haven't invented gunpowder is quite simple. They can't. In the rainbow six event, someone said terra has different chemistry so arknights' universe maybe missing an essential element for gunpowder(how that works I have no idea, it's literally sulphur, potassium, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen and carbon, all of which normal humans aka. team rainbow needs to survive), or those elements don't react in a way that would form gunpowder (only way to find out is if we know that element A reacts with element B on earth in a specific way, we bring those elements to Terra and try that reaction again)(but we do know that those elements react the same way as on Earth to form gunpowder because team rainbow was able to fire their guns; if Terra's laws don't allow the formation of gunpowder, team rainbow's guns wouldn't be able to fire those bullets because as soon as they crossed over from Earth to Terra, the bullets are now unreactive chemicals encased in brass.) I hope the devs come up with good lore about this and not just wave their hand and say "It's magic (or arts)". To anyone who read this, sorry you had to read my ramblings lol.

Laterano and Iberia are not the only ones that give weapons spiritual meaning. The sarkaz of Kazdel, being a warrior race, seem to have a culture sorrounding weapons and names as seen in Darknights Memoir and Flamebringer in his short story. In Sarkaz culture, to take another Sarkaz's weapon after their death is to take their name and their place. W's rifle, which she never uses, belonged to the previous W and at the end of Darknights Memoir, she sees a kid with a sarkaz sword and asks him if he knows what that means. In a sense, low class sarkaz of kazdel have no name but that of their weapon (side effects of growing up in a war torn country). I seem to recall W and Theresa talking about that when Theresa asks her name. Mudrock squad can also be seen using hammers similar to that of their leader's but the reason is mostly up in the air. Even Columbia sarkaz like Vigna take pride in mastering complicated weaponry and techniques. Also, you'll notice many sarkaz mercenaries use nicknames to talk to one another. One of Mudrock's squad was literally called Chef. Apparently, saying your name outloud to another sarkaz can be interpreted as a challenge. Lastly sarkaz mercenaries often take the guns of laterano people they kill (mostly sankta) as trophies even if they can't use them. I imagine, to them, its almost as insulting as taking an enemy's dog tag would be to us. You know that weapons rack of W's room? Each one of those belonged to someone she's killed...

i have a arknights theory: What if terra is just a future version of earth after Humanity destroyed it's self earth recovered and a new era began consisting of different humanoid species like our operators where some surviving humans evolved to survive the environment which is why we have cat girls, drug doggo girls and some even dragon girls. And thats why the countries in terra looks similar to ours, after earth got detroyed, the tectonic plates sperated once again.
