My parents built a ranch house with a full basement. They had a wood stove in the basement and didn’t insulate the floor so the heat just came up through the floor.

My chimney guy taught me a trick when starting a woodstove: point your torch up the chimney to displace the falling cold air with rising hot air, just a few seconds, then light your wood/paper/cardboard. It works, no more smoke coming back. Long time subscriber, watch every episode (from SW MO).

We also have a fire wood cart to bring in wood. We secured a piece of plywood to the bottom area. Ours also came with a strap that goes from the upper rail to the lower rail so more wood can be put in right up to the top rail. On occasion, we put recycling bins on the bottom and the hump and add the wood to those. Makes for fewer trips into the house. I have also wheeled the wood cart right into the house to bring the wood over to the wood stove. The wood cart is a very useful tool. I have a wood rack inside for a least a days worth of wood. I'm so glad we got it. I also collect twigs for starting the fire. Great video! Thanks for letting us know how you prep for bad weather. I'm also a bottom up fire builder. We had registered Holsteins. Our cows always came to us if we were out around the pasture. They loved to be scratched behind their ears and around their neck. Thanks again for a great video!

That wood stove makes for a very great humidifier - with a pressure cooker/canner and water placed on top. The stove heats up the pressure cooker which then spews out pressurized steam. Steam has a very high heat-retention - keeping the house warmer with less energy expended. Also steam in the house for those very dry and cold blustery winters - humidifies the dry house air, but also the sinus and lungs - preventing dry nose, dry eyes, colds, influenza, and pneumonia. Any addition of any desirable essential oils - apple/cinnamon, peppermint, mint, orange also provides healing and healthy humidified air - and the atomized essential oils also keep down any airborne dust (soil blight virus and hay dust, dandruff, ...) and other bacterial/germ/viral/mold/mildew/fungal diseases wafting around - and is also a good ridder of small critters that might want to take up winter residency in the warm house - spiders, mites, cockroaches, silverfish, ants, termites, earwigs, flies, lice, louse (hopefully not ticks) ... (just saying !!).

I make my own fire starters, too. I take old wax from candles melt them down, pour the wax into a big muffin tin that I got at the thrift store and place pinecones on top of each one. Sometimes when I have a lot of wax, I will dip the pinecones in wax first. cheap, cost-effective, recycled. I have also placed these pieces in baskets and use them as hostess gifts to friends that have woodburning fireplaces.

ha ha, me too! I often Make muffin cases with wood shavings in one colour and dip pine cones in another. lovely gift when placed in a tin with pretty matches.

I would love to have a wood stove. We have a fireplace, and two propane gas stoves. I always think it is good to have the option of wood burning stoves for the “in case” power outage. Gas is going up too, so the savings would be nice too. 😁😁🙌🙌

Good morning from Maine! We are now getting the snow / rain that you got yesterday. We burn wood as well. I like getting the small limbs cut for kindling. Also the stump left from cutting the tree is what we cut and use as chunk wood. Love and hugs

Great video. My Grandson and I look forward to watching your videos together b4 he goes to school Wednesday mornings. Its so good to have something GOOD to watch. Also, educational. I grew up in this manner but love having him see good home living! We live in Upstate Ny, had about 7 onches of snow over this past weekend. Last night some high winds and quite a bit of rain. Kevin and Sarah, we have a wood burning stove also. I thought you might be interested in what we use to clean the windows while the fire is still burning. Our stove is about 40 yrs old so I doubt if it burns as clean as yours! But we use my mothers old fox tail brush. (It's actually horsehair!) Each time we feed the fire we reach in and rub the windows with the brush. It takes a bit of elbow grease but not bad! We've used it for this purpose for about ten years with little or no wear and tear. We do have to use leather gloves and a clear face protector.

That wood stove is quite the beast! I have a smaller one, but it does well in my smaller house. I like all the adjustments you have on that one. As far as schools shutting down, I had to chuckle a bit. They hardly ever close schools here in the north. We'd have to get a couple feet, and even then, they might just open a couple hours late to wait for the plows to clear the bus routes. 😅 As usual, awesome informative video. Stay warm!

Awesome idea on the fire starters. We use our lint from the dryer and old candle wax for fire starters. I’ll put the lint in paper egg cartons then pour the wax over it. Cut a section of the carton and lite the carton or lint. 😊

My husband and myself cut our own logs for the fire same as your fire Bruce always say you get three heat from the logs one cutting it and one splitting it and the third burning it I love cutting and logging and it keeps the heating bill here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 down

I grew up helping cut, split, and stack firewood for the wood stove. My dad said the same thing about firewood. It heats you 3 times. Truth!❤

Always remember to check yourself after you’ve been around the Cedar trees, perhaps even the pine trees because ticks like to climb on the branches… At least, in Montana, they do! they can rub off on you extremely easily.

Great video and tips. Recent tip we learned for starting a fire is using tortilla chips. Just 5 or so under your kindling works great!! Also great to have while your camping :) Also, if you run your house furnace fan, it will spread the heat throughout the house better, avoiding hot spots. Fan alone uses very little electricity.

I grew up with wood heat, no furnace of any kind, no fan, no problem. Put in my own wood stove as an adult was told the same thing, run your HVAC fan. Well that only works when you have a central return. My house has returns in every room, so that meant the coldest rooms had the cold air sucked out of them and blown throughout the house. I only did that one winter and realized I was wasting electricity and compromising the work of my wood stove. Ever since, I just have two pedestal fans set up, one in the foyer to suck the heat from the living room and the other at the end of the hall to keep the heat moving through the house. It works much better and my entire house is more than comfortable. Couple that with a ceiling fan or two and we wouldn't trade our wood stove for any other source of heat.

We got 4'' of snow overnight. It's still coming down..my pantry is stocked, our "wood" monster is keeping us nice & warm. We are 50 miles from the big city where we have to go to shop. We had quail in our yard around the perimeter and I loved seeing them (and hearing them) but I didn't know about habitat and we cleaned up some of the shrubs and they went away. I have left the shrubs alone last season and we heard a few this fall....hoping they come back strong, now that I know better! Not allowed to keep them as pets (HOA) but I can encourage them to live here naturally.

My rescue French BullDog just loves sitting on the end of my recliner and watches all the animals.. He specially loves your new calf.. I have pictures of him episode after episode... Sitting with his ears up and at full attention.. Would love to send you a picture or 2.. You have a fan by the name of "Gus".. He was a God send.. someone set him on our back porch last March 1st. We live in South Lake County in Indiana. We heated our home with our earth stove that runs off of wood. Its in our basement. Heat rises so it has kept us toasty for years. It can get below zero here in the winter. We load the wood through the basement window into A metal bin. We then load it on a cart and wheel it over to our rack by the stove. We like to heat with mostly oak. It burns long and hot. We now have a gas furnace and we have electric baseboards as back ups. Wood heat is the best in my opinion.

Love our wood stove. The heat that comes from it is so different than our propane heater. And I like the fact that it heats up the bricks and they stay warm. We restart in the morning also.

We use a small Rubbermaid tote to bring the wood into the house. It works so much better than the canvas tote with open sides which dropped dirt and wood chips onto the floor.

My friends have a big stove. All flat on top. They put a stock pot on it at bedtime with water and beans. He fills the stove, closes the drafts completely and then turns them back 1/4 turn. In the morning breakfast is ready. Hot beans and bread. Oh they cover the stock pot with another stock upside down. Which acts like an oven.

We had a wood boiler - outdoors - for 35 years. When we moved to the family farm, no wood boiler. We retired. Less work all around!

When we had our wood stove we saved our dryer lint to help start fires. If I were ever able to have a small farm/homestead, all the animals would be pets.

Cows can be like puppies . In fact my sis called 1puppy. Trouble when her son told the teacher he had "puppy burger" for supper. Lol, they investigated because they thought he had been fed dog food . My husband had actually rode a calf like a horse.

There’s nothing like wood heat. My husband and I live in Wisconsin and wood heat is our only source of heat. I have a cookstove in my kitchen for the days that are not too cold. I love cooking on it. We get a smaller one in the living room for temps below 30° to keep both ends of the house warm and a big one in the basement for when it gets colder than 5°. so the pipes don’t freeze. Which we probably will be using this weekend.

Play music for them. Cows love music-especially deep tones. Play a tuba or French horn concerto or a Russian male chorus recording. They will congregate immediately.
