I had one of these they’re actually really cool. A few things the guy didn’t mention about the pick up is the endgate actually swings out from the side I’m addition to folding down, and also the Midgate has a window you can roll up so you can have rear exposed while still keeping the climate control inside the cab.

Surprised it still works - most of the mechanisms that operate the top break on this truck.

The commercial for the Envoy was a upper-middle class guy buying a large, flat panel TV (back when that was still a sign of huge wealth) and the store employee saying "woah" as the top retracted. Basically the message was "show off to the plebs in one more way" even though the truck wasn't that expensive.

The Studebaker Wagonaire from 1963 to 1966 could do that as well.

GM had a thing for SUV/Pickup Truck Hybrid things around this point (Chevrolet Avalanche is another example).

One of the few SUVs I've seen that pays any attention to the "U" part of the name.

I remember almost buying one of these when I was in my 20s because dealerships were virtually giving them away. Chevy was putting $12,000 on the hoods of these trucks in 2004. You could get them as low as $19,000. Imagine paying $29,000 today for a 5 person SUV with at least 275HP, that can tow 6500 lbs and converts into a truck with a six foot bed. That's what this was.

I remember when they were first advertising these on TV that one of the selling points was that they could hold a fridge upright in it, which almost had me thinking about buying one at one point back in the day. This was definitely one of Jim’s more unique SUVs and even though I’m sure it comes with its share of electrical problems. It’s still a pretty cool/interesting SUV to me.

We have one. it was a pre production originally for the U.S. government I believe. had to go to court to get the vin. It has a 5.3 that little truck will rip.

My parents had one of these, and a standard GMC Envoy as well. They put about 500,000 miles on each one, for a grand total of just over 1 million miles, or about two round trips to the moon.

Not crazy. Not even unique or first with the idea. Studebaker had the same idea almost 60 years ago. The model was called the Wagonaire. Production ran from 1963 through 66. Those GMC versions are EXPENSIVE to keep working. The roof section tracks have drains that plug. The tracks can also rust. The tailgate and midgate can both suffer breakdown that is difficult and tricky. Check out Watch JR Go to see what it is like to fix one. Also, these things had special shock absorbers that are very expensive.

Don't know how I missed that the envoy does that. The only thing I knew about them was that they were ugly.
