On a clear, sunny Sunday afternoon in May 1944, Pearl Harbor once again erupted into fire, chaos and destruction, only this time, it wasn’t from an enemy attack. Instead, an accident inside the West Loch of the harbor would lead to the 2nd greatest loss of life witnessed on Hawaiian shores during the 2nd World War.

I lived in Ewa Beach, which is near West Loch, in the 1960s. I always wondered what that shipwreck was from. You just answered my 60 year-old question! Thank you!

Glad I subscribed, never knew about this, & I agree with what you said at the end...makes me wonder WTF we're they thinking...yeah, lets have a smoke on a floating ammo dump, what could go wrong??!!!🤷‍♂️ I understand why it was kept hush-hush but it took the navy too long to come clean; the saddest part wasn't the deaths...is that it could have been avoided! LEST WE FORGET ⚓️🇺🇸

It is unfortunate, but all too often the lessons that are the foundation of safety policies, procedures, and best practices come at the cost of lives. This is true in the maritime industry (military or civilian) as well as the mining, building, transportation, and life safety/fire suppressions industries, just to name a few.

A terrible tragedy that shouldn’t have happened it’s understandable this was an event suppressed at the time on grounds of moral. One can only hope lessons were learned as the war reached it’s climax
