I actually thought he knew he was there when he glanced to his left before and after his little best friend speech. I think he was telling Leo how he felt without actually telling him. I feel that is even more powerful than if he truly did not know Leo was there. Imagine being able to sing your best friend's praises under the guise of invisibility?

Bartlett may not have seen Leo...but he did see the red light that let him know the camera was on when he let something slip out he wasn't supposed to say, but wanted it out there. so who knows....I've had big bosses who pretended to not be aware of what was going on, but could hear from across the room things workers were dumb enough to say out loud. Its how they became the big boss.

Wonderful the way he takes the time to make the guy understand that though he has been asked a really simple and boring thing, i.e. stay away from a party, he's performing a well-defined and potentially crucial function for the lawful running of the country. Recently on a lark, I decided to read the transcript for the Pilot of the West Wing. I read all the characters, making my own interpretations at certain points, sticking to the originals at others, and despite juggling multiple characters and the breakneck pace of the dialogue, I think I did a pretty good job the my attempt at a performance. Until I got to Bartlet. I could not, absolutely could not come close to replicating the... the everything that made Bartlet Bartlet. His wisdom, his kindness, his love for his friends and family, his righteous fury, his faith in his God and his fellow man, I tried and fell so, so far short of imitating Martin Sheen's performance. Seriously, this guy had the best performance in the history of television, over the likes of Kelsey Grammer, Bryan Cranston, James Gandolfini, Peter Dinklage.

This is also one of my favourite scenes, but there are many. Just as with the magnificent pre-credits scene in 17 people, the tone of the orchestra beuatifully accompanies Leo's reaction. And, as always, the writing is breathtaking. Bartlett does not ask him 'Who would be your Chief of Staff?', he just asks him, 'You gotta best friend?' - the synthesis of emotive language and politics-speak that Sorkin incorporates is majestical. As you say, Jed, people have phenomenal capacity.

You shall, from time to time, find a closest friend. A confidant. One who knows your likes, your passions, so well, their selection of gifts is never off the shelf. But searched for with care. Hand picked to brighten your day. Keep them close. These friends know who you really are.

Was there or has there been anything better on TV than this? This show got me through the first half of this decade. I was watching it Sydney Australia the night of 9/11. A priceless piece of television.

The designated survivor isn't even supposed to be in DC, let alone in the White House. Any potential attack would take them out as well.

Lee McKay: Post 9/11 yes. This was shot pre-9/11. One designated survivor, then-Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, met his daughter in New York City for dinner. When they went to the restaurant, it was in a full presidential-style motorcade, lights, shrieking police sirens, specialist officers with close quarter battle weapons, and with a military officer that had a duplicate set of the nuclear codes. The speech ended in the middle of dinner. When he got out on the street, it had begun raining and the motorcade, the military officers, all of it was gone. And he was just some guy standing on a NY street in the rain. Donna Shala, the then-H.H.S. Secretary (now a member of the House from south Florida) stayed at the White House and had her staff from H.H.S. over for pizza. She briefly went alone into the Oval Office and sat behind the Resolute Desk for a moment, getting a feel for what it was like to be there. Nowadays, it's far more security conscious. Now it's even pretty well moot since the House and Senate designate survivors who could form a mini-quorum and allow that person to become Acting Speaker of the House or President Pro Tempore of the Senate and then "bump" whatever Cabinet official was designated, making the congressional official the new Acting POTUS. It's all untested legal waters since it's never happened before. It is entirely likely however, that they may be in the D.C. area; an undisclosed location means simply that. When Cheney was often at a "secure, undisclosed location," it was the Vice President's official residence in D.C., where you might expect he would be, or at Camp David, hardly a secret. On 9/11, Cheney refused to evacuate to a more secure location, staying at the PEOC under the White House; Robert Byrd, the then-President Pro Tempore insisted on going home (He was 84 at the time) and Donald Rumsfield refused to go to Site R, the backup Pentagon, sending his deputy instead. Colin Powell was in Latin America at the time. The only one who did follow the protocols, Speaker Dennis Hasert, ended up being out of touch with the rest of the government for the day by going to his secure location.

Nor did it have the same humor, heart, suspense, etc. I felt the show really went downhill once Sorkin left.

I once stole his quote for a scene between a Starfleet Captain and his Chief Engineer. He was leaving on an away mission with his first officer (a Vulcan naturally) and Chief Medical Officer, and he was giving his Chief Engineer command. Captain Abel MacKenzie: “If anything happens you gather all of your department heads in the conference room, alert Starfleet Command, raise the shields and arm weapons... You got a best friend on this ship?” Lt. Commander Nadia Tokarev: “Yes sir.” Captain Abel MacKenzie: “Are they smarter than you?” Lt. Commander Nadia: (chuckling) “Yes sir.” Captain Abel MacKenzie: “Would you trust them with your life?” Lt. Commander Nadia: “Yes sir.” Captain Abel MacKenzie: “That’s your First Officer.” Not much but better than the Abrams films or Discovery.

The framing of the portrait of Washington behind the Secretary seems so important here. He's never in focus, but his status as America's Cincinnatus - the man who took the reins of power when it seemed no one could, and relinquished them when the time was right rather than becoming a monarch - reflects the expectation of every American president.

What a radical idea: a president with a genuinely kind, generous, unselfish human heart. And, incidentally, an educated man who studied Latin.

@Z7TomC7Z Bartlett is on his way to deliver the State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress. With almost every official of the US govt. in one place, someone in the line of succession has to stay behind just in case, say, the building burned down with everyone in it. The other character is that someone--the Secretary of Agriculture, IIRC. I like the "That's your Chief of Staff" line--as I recall, Leo was facing a rough ride over the revelation of his substance abuse at the time.

*In the Rome of antiquity, 'Public Speaking' was considered an art form due to the complexities of forming proper nouns and verb-tenses and the declension of Latin verbs...it was possible for a week or so of the year for even a slave to 'Orate' to persons of high office and be granted a 'Citizen of Rome' status simply by speaking a retort to another, or even addressing an audience of listeners* _________ *"I would have about me fat men...contented men, and yon Cassius looks lean and hungry"* ( *Good advice for a President, to have about you 'contented men'* )
