Your parchment paper tip literally changed my life. I opened my pallletttetee and MY PAINTS WERE STILL WET. Although the humidity here in the desert has gone up from 10% to 30% this week so I cannot be sure, but its a world of difference so far and I'm ecstatic. Thanks for making my life that much more moist.

I happened to get the masterson palette before I saw this video, but ironically I was actually considering starting to use parchment paper rather than the special paper included with the palette. The palette paper is okay, but because I'm putting such small amounts of paint onto it, I felt like the paint was being absorbed somewhat into the paper, so I'm going to try out parchment paper today instead. Thanks for the tips!

Just got back into modeling and I was looking at various things that were released throughout the years I was absent. This is when I started to see the wet palette thing and didn't know what the hell was going on. At first, I thought it was just a fancy new fad that was just something that is a temporary thing but lets look into it. Now I might have to get one because while I am not a penny pincher when it comes trying to get every little bit of paint out of the bottle but dealing with eye droppers I hate having a clump of paint drying on me while I was trying to paint an army.

I've just started with a wet palette, and this is happening to me as well. I start out with a regular paint and end up with a glaze in about 10 mins of it being sat on my palette, even though the paper is dry on top and my sponge is just damp. I'd love to know what's going wrong.

I made a wet palette with an old tupperware, I could keep my paint ready to use for like 6 months without adding water to the sponge ( at least I rarely did). The tupperware lead prevent the water to evaporate outside the box (or something along those lines).

Having some pretty good results using a plate, 2 x tissues and bond paper from an old notebook. Seems the lads across at Warhammer community use dry pallet and a little water. I know this was a while ago but would be interested in a comparison of all 3. (Probably will level up to baking paper just keep forgetting it when I’m at the grocer).

@Miniac
@Miniac 6 жыл бұрын
if you're going to paint again soon there's no point in taking the sponge out. But if you're not going to paint for like a week or a month taking it out and ringing and dry will prevent mold from growing.

Thanks for this video! I bought this palette a few years ago, I recall using it once and then put it away when I moved. I've set it up again but I seem to have a little difficulty getting the right saturation. When I used it the first time, paint stayed nice and... moist.... but now it doesn't seem to stay as thin - both during use and when sealed properly overnight. I'm just having trouble with that fine line between "paper dries out too fast" and "paint is too runny".
@Miniac
@Miniac 7 жыл бұрын
HeadHunter is your sponge wet? how often do you add water?
@HeadHunterSix
@HeadHunterSix 7 жыл бұрын
I'm still fine-tuning the saturation. I get the sponge pretty wet - a little more than it can hold - and add some water when the parchment surface isn't moist. But it seems that there's like one drop difference between "too wet" and "too dry".

I’m struggling with the wet palette. I picked this up and got the parchment paper but no matter what I do the paint separates and breaks up into little beads. I’m trying to find parchment paper that isn’t non stick because I think it’s the non stick thing that’s causing the paint to split and bead up. Hi Im new to the hobby. I've had a battle of Macragge starter set for the longest time and i finally decided to ppick it and have a go. I'm absolutely obsessed with this hobby but having a hard time getting my painting game on par with where I'd like it. I have a ton of questions but I'll just try to keep it focused on the wet palette and the base coat. Also, love the videos by the way. Very helpful. Do i need to let my paint sit on the wet palette for a certain amount of time before usiing it? does this make the paint diluted like its supposed to be for a base coat or do i still need to come at it with some extra water to make it the proper consistency and play it by ear? I'm trying to get my base coat to look smooth and i want to get good at with a brush before moving on to base coating with an airbrush. I know that the base coat should be melted ice cream consistency or skim milk and you should do it in layers and not paint over it until dry but its still coming out splotchy. Should i prime with white when i do a lighter base coat like you've experimented with in other videos or, if i primed with black, should i just layer the base coat until it looks the way I want it? Do you have any suggestions of experiments or ways i can practice finding the right consistency? ...alright i guess I failed at keeping the questions to a minimum... i guess for now I'll keep practicing and trying to figure out what works. Love the videos though they've been a great reference and tool!!!

The dark pigment vanish when i mix the paint with the brush, returning to it's natural color. Maybe it's becouse the sponge is too thin and contain few water in it? It's like the paint separate itself?

Great video - as always. Quick question; do you then add water to your paint once it's on the palette? Or do you consider that once the paint is put on the palette, it's basically ready to be used as is?
@Miniac
@Miniac 8 жыл бұрын
Depends on a few things: 1. What am I trying to do? Basecoat, glaze, layer, etc. If I'm doing anything but basecoating, I made add some water. 2. How thick is the paint? If it's an old, GW foundation paint, I have to add water. If it's a new vallejo paint, I shouldn't need any water (to basecoat).
@dambt
@dambt 8 жыл бұрын
Awesome - makes so much sense! I mostly use 'new Vallejo' paints. Would the following 'adaptable' set of rules be good for me to follow? - If basecoating, don't add water - If layering, add a little bit of water (2-3:1 paint to water ratio?) - If glazing, make it rain (1:4-5 paint to thinner ratio?) I understand these are not exact and should always vary!

Great video! Does the wet palette have any advantages over adding drying retarder to the paint?
@Miniac
@Miniac 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it keeps the paint usable for longer than drying retarder would, and it also doesn't effect how the paint dries once you apply it on a miniature. Thanks for watching!

Depends on the paint but usually yes you do. It'll keep for much longer and you'll use a ton less paint.

Two very important things when you start using a wet palette. Do not use metallic paints and do not use washes. All professional wet palettes come with a mixing palette in addition to them. Use that instead. This is coming from a noob that ruined his sponge not knowing the above tips.

Hey so I have been trying to use mine i just got and its seems to water down my paint to almost a glaze. Got any advice to stop this or idea why it is happening?
@Miniac
@Miniac 6 жыл бұрын
two reason: 1. there are water globules on top of the paper and you're mixing your paint with them thinning it more than you want 2. you're putting the lid on, and over night due to no water evaporation, it thins your paint w/o moderation. Put your lid on upside down to allow for some evaporation.
