Zain's World

This 5-minute documentary about whirling dervishes was created by Zain Dada and Jacob McDowell as a final project for a Learning Community (LCRM 200-LC-J) at Augustana College - Rock Island, IL.
The Learning Community consisted of two classes taught side-by-side. Dr. Cyrus Ali Zargar taught a course on "Sufi Literature" (RELG 378-LC) and Dr. Sarah Skrainka taught a course on "The Complete Works" by Michel de Montaigne (WLIT 326-LC2).
The aim of this short video is to provide a basic explanation behind the origin of Sufi whirling and how the ritual (known as a "Sema") is structured.

It is said that Rumi invented whirling after he lost his dearest spirutal friend on earth. He was so grief stricken he had to create a new way to experience unity with the power of God's compassionate love and equanimity. Another story about Rumi tells about a time when he was imprisoned for spreading "heresy." In prison, all the prisoners were profoundly depressed or angry. Rumi taught them to whirl. The jailers soon set Rumi - and the prisoners, now ecstatically happy - free because no punishment is accomplished by prison when people know how to remain spiritually free! I can share a lesson on whirling taught by Reshad Field, a English teacher and author who was a protege of Sheik Suleiman Dede of the Mevlivi order, and taught in Los Angeles in 1975-76. The following, he taught, is a part of the meaning and technique of Sufi whirling (see note at the end on footwork): Do not allow your energy to be centered in your head or left hemisphere brain while whirling as you will become very dizzy. If you try to center your balance in your abdomen or gut, you will develop nausea. If you bring awareness fully into your heart, your compassionate heart, and keep it focused solely on God in your heart, allowing universal energy of God to flow in through your upturned hand, down through your heart, and out through your downturned hand in a gesture to pass God's blessing to all things on earth - without allowing your ego to grasp - a dynamic flow of divine love will oass through you and you will not become dizzy or tired. At the end of 5-30 minutes of whirling you can stop with feet and toes forward, and bow your head and torso low to the ground without dizzyness or falling over. During whirling, the ball of the left foot is the pivot point as the right foot and right leg turns inward in front of the left foot stepping across the body counterclockwise during each pivot of the body.. I took note at the time as a young student of spiritual wisdom and dance. I didn't practice whirling, but I always loved and never forgot the remarkable symbolism. Hopefully you find merit in this explanation. ❤ The technique of the footwork without any spiritual message is explained rather well by a teacher of poi in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbSHjMx00tjReZs.html )

The Abrahamic faiths ( Deen - e - lbrahim , Abraham's religion ) are Judaism , Christianity and lslam , so Jews , Christians and Muslims are brothers in religion. Both Muslims and Jews eat only Halal foods ( halal in Judaism is in more detailed form called " Kosher " food ). Both Jews and Muslims don't eat pork . Both Jews boys and muslim boys perform religious rite called " Circumcision " which prevents from various Sexually transmitted diseases also. Some Christians also perform Circumcision in many countries. Jews , Muslims and some Christians ( like Popes & clergymen) wear caps . Islam allows marriage of muslim boy with Muslim, Christian or Jew girl only as lslam recognizes their religions as holy / divine and considered as "Ahl-e-Kitaab " ( religions of divine holy books ). Islam recognizes all the prophets ( of Islam, Judaism and Christianity). No muslim is a Muslim who rejects Prophet Muhammad or any prophets before him like Abraham ( Ibrahim) , Moses ( Musa ) , David ( Dawood) , Jesus ( Eisa ) etc. Muslims believe in Holy Quran revealed upon Prophet Muhammad ; Torait / Towrat ( Torah ) revealed upon Musa ( Moses ) ; Zabur ( Psalms ) revealed upon Dawood ( David ) and injeel ( Gospel ) revealed upon Eisa son of Mariam ( Jesus son of Mary ).

@@melikegocmen4172 Rumi means THE ROMAN. His family FLED muslim expansion. Historians say in those days he would have been referred to as RUMI (the Roman) because that was the name given to Roman Catholic communities that remained after Islamic takeover of Turkey. Like many people of other faiths he was clearly force-converted into Islam. That's why he quotes both Christianity and Islam in his poems.

@@mmxxivi102 if you search his biography you will learn the truth.by the way rumi not only means roman catholic. Rumi means " of or belongs to the land of rums ( including minor asia)". He was called rumi because he reached his fame and spent almost all his life in minor asia( anatolia). His tomb is there as well. But he and his family is originally from afganistan. His father is a respected islamic scholar as well.by the way islam accepts and respects all the prophets mentioned in the Bible.of course we know prophet joseph's , jacob's and other prophets biograpies.if you read the holly Kuran you can understand this.
