Targeted towards the whisky enthusiast, this video covers the four main aspects of discovering the attitude of a Scotch Single Malt Whisky producer when offering a bottle to the market, and can help determine the target market - whiskey enthusiasts or a more general buyer. It looks at non-age statement (NAS), bottling strength, ABV, chill-filtration and added E150a spirit caramel colouring. It also looks at three of my recommended NAS whiskies from Glen Scotia, Deanston and Tomatin, which I feel offer a decent whisky experience and value at a reasonable price point. These are opinions only and are no more valid than your own - please share them with the growing #whiskytube community and be a part of it. It's awesome #whiskyfabric
I am an enthusiast - not an expert.
This video is intended as a guide and for entertainment. It is is a completely subjective creation and review and is wholly self-funded. The whisky is purchased by me, even the t-shirt is purchased by me (although it's by Urban Pirate and cool enough to warrant a link below - please tell them I sent you; neither of us will enjoy a discount but, you know, they're a Scottish independent company and deserve our support for creative genius). I did get something for free - and that's the awesome soundtrack by the even-more-awesome DJ Quads, you can discover more of his genius here: / aka-dj-quads

Have to agree about the Tomatin Legacy. It was given to me as a birthday present recently and my wife (who did not drink whisky previously) helped me finish it in a very shorty period of time! Thanks Rog!

Coming back to watch prior to the 2022 revisit vPub. I must say, I miss these Aqvavitae "shorts" as I call them. The pre-recorded topical videos. The vPub is essential and much beloved but you absolutely nail these topical shorts of which many go on to become whisky canon like your pronunciation videos and this one.

I'm just going through your back-catalogue of videos. I'm glad to see that your ABCDE pretty much matches the Checklist I use in my review videos. My approach to buying whisky is very much a product of scarcity, rarity and the freedom of movement that I comes with being in a band that plays a Celtic festival 4500 km from my home every summer. Because both selection and supply in my home province of Quebec are so thin, I get what I can here, but buy a lot more from a store in Alberta, which is where my fiddler lives. After doing our Western shows, I come home with a half-dozen new bottles to explore. But it means that I have almost never tried a whisky out before plonking down my dollars on it. My fiddler knows my palate, and where he can push me into new territory without everything going pear-shaped, so it's worked out well so far. These days, I buy my bottles specifically with an eye towards creating content, so I'm trying to stay within the zone I like best: Single Malt Age statement Non chill-filtered No damned colouring 45% or higher. Okay, so that was a long-winded way to say I liked this episode pretty well. Thanks for your great content.

Enjoyed the video, just like the rest of them. You mentioned being disappointed when you learned that colorant is added to whisky. I felt that way, too, when I learned that cognac is allowed to be both "enhanced" visually and also sweetened (with boise). They tell us that E150a is "natural". It's made by heating sugar (most likely corn syrup, whatever is the cheapest commodity sugar) in the presence of strong acid or alkali. So think sulphuric acid or lye. To the point that it produces a bitter ink-like tincture that is soluble in ethanol (or other things for other variations of E150 additive). Very natural, right? :)

Horst Luening from whisky.com, apart from reviewing whisky, also happens to have a PhD. He conducted the experiment you mentioned, did his own chill filtration on unfiltered whiskys and was unable to taste the difference. Obviously, while he followed a scientific approach, it just represents one study and the results should be reproduced by others to be taken as established, but things seem to point in that direction. For me it is a matter of economics. When I pay for a bottle of whisky I am paying for a number of activities that went into producing it, presenting it, distributing it, marketing it, and the profit and wages of everyone involved. I speak with my wallet and I don't want them to spend resources on chill filtering, just as I don't want them to spend on a lot of traditional advertising, so without being too radical about it, I favour distilleries that don't do these things. Also, with features of a moral or philosophical dimension it is not just about result. I cannot taste the difference between an apple that was grown locally using organic methods, compared to one that traveled across the world, was grown by child labourers, and has been irradiated to increase shelf life, but I certainly have an opinion on which one I want to buy.
@alexk3088
@alexk3088 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great point (and frankly it didn't take a PhD to think of that, Mr. Luening just liked to drop that title on us). But that only proved that HE couldn't taste the difference (or he and his son or a few more participants). And I have nothing against the gentlemen (both Luenings, father and son), they are clearly passionate and sincere about whisky. But they are in the business of selling whisky. And their perceptions represent just that - two men's opinions, which are worth about the same as anyone else. I would just say that it's been discovered more recently that along with tasting salty, sweet, bitter and sour, also astringent and savory (umami), our tongues can also taste fats and oils. If we can taste the difference between fat-free and full fat yogurt, sour cream, milk, etc. If we think something is "unctuous" or "rich", we are tasting lipids (fats and oils). And it works in tandem with other flavors, of course (i.e. a full-fat natural yogurt has the same flavoring components as fat-free, but it tastes better). And then there's the "texture" or "mouthfeel", viscosity. I'll give a strong argument that it matters. Pick up a commercial soft drink, such as iced tea, something fruit-flavored, i.e. Snapple, etc. It's reasonable to assume that it would contain brewed tea, sugar/sweetener and flavoring. But very often it also contains pectin or guar gum or a number of other similar "mouthfeel" additives (thickening agents). This is not jelly, not a thickened beverage, why would it need gelling agents (which are flavorless)? To improve mouthfeel - and it took a bunch of food scientists to come up with that. Now, I wouldn't argue in favor of adding something that wasn't there naturally. But I would certainly argue that removing something that was there naturally will detract from the experience, even if subtly. That's why I also agree with the rest of your points. I think that natural presentation communicates integrity in other production steps, while contrived presentation communicates that producer is manipulating my perception.

And finally, I always add water to my whisky anyway, to bring it down to about 36%, so I do not really care about bottling strength. In fact, if I bought a bottle at 59% I would be worried about changing the flavour too much by adding almost 50% water! I am happy to have the distiller do most of that for me. But if you enjoy your whisky at greater than 40% ABV, fair play to you. Cheers!

Following up on this great video and your recommendations: I had the opportunity to purchase the Glen Scotia Double Cask at a local retailer for $32-easily worth a punt based on price point. I was not disappointed! The PX and active American oak do put it on the sweeter side with a distinct bourbon-y/sawdusty aspect that's not always my thing, but the tannins are under control on the finish (my usual difficulty with drams like this). It scratches the same itch as Auchentoshan 12yo with 6-pct-points higher ABV and costing $10 less. We'll see what air does to the open bottle after a couple weeks. Great for setting out at a party, as a transitional dram for friends coming over from bourbon or American rye, or for just pouring a glass and not thinking too much. Thanks for the tip!

There is another reason for the appearance and strong presence of NAS Whisky and that is the explosion of new up and coming Distilleries around the World. In parts of the New World where warmer temperatures dominate, NAS Whiskies are a legitimate local presentation due to the faster rates of maturation and the use of smaller Casks. We are less prone to suffer from the shortcomings of young NAS bottlings in the New World than those coming from colder climes due to the advantage our weather provides in maturation. While traditional long term maturation in Scotch remains a benchmark, in other parts of the world a different approach to Whisky is becoming ubiquitous, appreciated and award winning - that of shorter term maturation cycles. Whether due to necessity or simply environment, NAS down here, is no barrier to the pursuit of producing exceptional spirit. Educating the public to that fact in broad commercial markets however is a glacial proposition but I feel the thaw will come sooner rather than later .... in the meantime, that crevasse is filled with stunning expressions I'm still waiting to try! ( Sitting here with a dram of Edradour 10 ... next in flight, the original Ardmore NAS Traditional double cask, 100% Peated, 46% Non Chill Filtered )

I had an "awakening" as a consumer as I got deeper and deeper into whisk(e)y. I have learned exactly what you are describing, both with bourbon first then scotch. Interesting times with demand skyrocketing and producers trying to capitalize on the market increase. I can be a sucker for a great label or bottle style, ie; Old Pulteney has one of the best bottle designs ever... and well it tastes awesome too. but there are some out there that are not good regardless of the packaging. I still get burnt every once in a while when I haven't quite done the research but that is on me at that point. I see it so often on facebook chats where someone is new and trying to figure out what to purchase. Reading labels, or listening the store clerk (who usually knows less than them) is pushing their mediocre brands. Videos like yours and others really do help us the general public take home a nice bottle to enjoy and experience. once again, keep up the great work and no worries on how often they are released. Slainte'

Just discovered your channel, and I'm really enjoying your videos, especially this one. Thanks for all your thoughts, and also being informative without being doctrinaire. I look for natural presentation whenever I can, but if you make it a strict rule, you can shut yourself off from fantastic experiences and value for money. Lagavulin 16 and Talisker 10 are reliable, available, and excellent, and chill-filtered and colored and bottled below 46%...and the list doesn't stop there. That being said, if I'm taking a punt on a bottle, seeing A/B/C/D makes me much more confident. Cheers!

Very good ! PS : To answer one of your questions about chill filtering, one day Fred Laing (yes the one from Douglas Laing & co) told me, while assessing one of my home blends experiments that he felt that some of the whiskies were chill filtered & he was a bit put off by it, despite the decent balance he founded in the whole thing, so he pushed me to try to do one only with non chill filtered whiskies. On the other hand, John Glaser (the main moral sponsor of my website) stated he wasn't distracted by that ,despite he prefers to have his whiskies non chill filtered. So divided opinions on this...but I agree it is hard to spot the difference sometimes.

Cheers Dylan. Kid gloves though with newbies - it's all too easy for me to forget how over the moon I was with a new bottle of Balvenie 12 Doublewood, thinking it was the cream of the crop. All of these little steps are valid epiphanies - even if they don't meet these criteria. Thanks Dylan.

Ardbeg’s entire NAS line is tip top, but they use their older stocks to make them and throw in a splash of the younger scotch to give it some unique qualities. The Uigeadail just might be the best malt they make.

Great video. Enjoy the Tomatin and will try the Deanston in the future. A big thank you for organizing the World Whiskey Day all day streaming. I had no idea of the holiday but that morning set out from the country where I live to the big city to visit many liquor stores to find rare bottles. Returned home victorious with Elijah Craig Barrel Proof and Stagg Jr. sat down to have a dram and watch "It's bourbon night" Saturday live and ended up watching all day and night.

Many thanks for your reply. Never try to drown out anything Scottish. The whole world loves everything Scottish, from the breath taking, stunning and varied lands and islands to the warmth and charisma of its people to the food, and of course , the whisky, renowned and revered world wide above all other spirits. Your video was very inspiring. I worked at Selfridges wines and spirits department during my holidays in the 70s/80s where I was first introduced to single malts and bought my very first bottle; Glenmorangie 10 yr old. I thought it was absolute heaven and I always kept a bottle since. I've become a Scotch enthusiast and growing my collection. The taste of scotch is unique and from the finest SMs to the cheep supermarkets own value brands someone with a blindfold would be able to tell it's scotch. (I use the latter to experiment with creativity e.g. I fill them into jars and add such things as chunks of 80% plain chocolate, acacia bark, dried peel and store them for months. I won't waffle on any more but just to finish off by saying that the Scotch industry deserves credit in producing a wide variety of whiskies, boldly embracing innovation and variation in methods without compromising the core properties and quality as well as tradition of what distinguishes a spirits revered the world over.

@Aqvavitae
@Aqvavitae 5 жыл бұрын
I think that's a pretty fair shout. I like that Laphroaig put them out at 48% too, it helps a lot. It's a pretty pricey prospect though (at least in the UK c.£80) to make the recommended list, but it's a good one.
@lippy22

Nice video - I was hoping C was for casks - i have only been drinking whisky for a few years but i have found doing your research on cask maturation helps to avoid bottles i wont like. High abv is usually a good idea / if its smokey then young is better and if it is sherry matured i like high abv and full sherry maturation. Best thing about whisky is we all like different things

Fantastic video - just wish I’d seen it sooner: I was just making a purchase today and thought about trying Glen Scotia, but I chickened out (thanks to not understanding the implications of “no age statement”) and tried Caol Ila instead. I’m genuinely loving the Islay product, but will go younger next time. I also agree with you about putting it on the label: printing “Aged 6 Years” right across the front just reaffirms two endearing qualities of Scotland and her people...honesty and chutzpah. Strong work.

Great video Roy! To take the conversation a bit further on the "C"... I've not really paid close enough attention, but the higher ABV whiskies do not require chill filtering as this high alcohol level prevents the whisky from clouding or hazing. Now I do challenge myself moving forward to pay more attention to the bottles that I notice are "non-chill" filtered and their ABVs. I can't hardly think that chill filtering doesn't change the palate in some way, but I really have no proof of that (no pun intended).I enjoyed the information and really liked that in spite of your ABCDs you still ended with some whisky that you find very good that don't score many points on your scale. Which to me drives the point home that it really is a journey and subjective. Those finds are always fun, although I would recommend folks stick to your scale to be a bit more safe until they have enough experience themselves to take some chances....I know I've been bitten by rolling the dice, but I've also been very fortunate to find some gems that wouldn't score well. Here's a follow up vid idea....IBs vs Major labels.... There's a skill to picking those IBs too and I for one have been learning from you on that... :-) Thanks again for another awesome video!

The fist few seconds, I recognise the bottles. GIVE THE LONGMORN SOME TIME! It's it's own thing. It's creamy and a little orange sherbet with a touch of honey, heather, and light oak. It's a matter of taste, of coarse, and yes I initially agreed fully. It wasn't my thing initially. I grew to like it. YES, I know that you were just using examples. You know your stuff. I have very similar thoughts on NAS. I think overall we are getting expressions that require a lot of faith that there is a artisan creativity going on by the blenders for our benefit. Unfortunately it's mostly to make the most of young stock to maximize profit. It's a cash grab!
