The Who - Magic Bus
Live at Leeds University
14th February 1970
This is the same as the orginal on the LP...and you can hear the reversed part as well, and Daltrey's harmonica at the end of the song.
CD2 from The Who Greatest Hits & more....

One of their finest moments without a doubt, and the best performance of Magic Bus on record. Brilliant. And the drumming … Keith makes them sound like they're alive. I've been blown away by this for 42 years and counting …

What I especially love about this performance is Keith. For the first few minutes he clicks on the rims of he drums, and then, man... he goes berserk. And everything else is top notch. A legendary one.

Incredible, a pure assault on the ears.The greatest live band and album of all time. This will never sound jaded.I came across this & had to take a listen yet again to an all time classic. Love Keith when he steams in....the engine of the band. Still sounds as fresh as it did when I aquired the LP in the early 70's.Listened to this a 1000 times and here's to the next 1000. Long live The Who. The greatest rock n'roll band in the world.

I absolutely love this version of Magic bus, it's the best I've ever heard! I got the privilege of working security for a Who concert in Miami, Fl shortly before Keith Moon passed, it was quite an experience, it was easy to see why he was called "Moon the loon", it was something I'll remember for forever... There's only one word to describe seeing the original members of band play....Magnificent!

One of the great live rock concerts of its time and a great live recording. Townsend was on of the very best of his era in rock. And when you listen to a lot of his blues rock stuff you can tell he was listening to some of the great back r&b and blues guys though this piece is pretty much on the rock end.

William, I still have all that stuff, bought the original album the day it was released. Looking down the list of gigs they did on one of the inserts, it was quite amazing to see that they played in my town on 15th May 1965 and were paid £150. It also has a letter from the head honcho at EMI records telling Kit Lambert that they weren't interested in signing the band.

I'm now 40 years old when I was in HighSchool I was lucky enough to have caught TheWho when they did the Quadraphina tour back in 96-97 I was front row, Before that I only had heard there songs on the radio and listened to Who's Next on my dads record player, After the first time I saw them live it made me research them more, I was told that they considered The Live at Leeds album the greatest live album ever recorded so I went out and bought it and as a 19year old kid who appreciates his parents Rock and Roll I was pleasantly suprised. Keith Moon to me showed why he was going to be one of the all time great Rock and Roll drummers John Entwistle was in the grove, Loved the way Pete Townsend played off his own echo and Rogers vocals were spot on and It Gelled together. To me the two greatest live albums are Live at Leeds and Humble Pies Live from the Fillmore West when it comes to Classic Hard Rock and Roll

The best track from the best live rock album ever made in my opinion. I saw all the huge bands in the late 60s/early 70s ( Stones, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, etc, etc) and not one of them was a patch on the Who. They had a raw energy on stage - that plus their huge musical talent ensured they were the best by a country mile. How many bands would have given their right arms for a rhythm section of Moon and Entwistle?

The problem with Led Zep is that there is no good "live" album of them. They produce good studio album, but on stage, J.Page is boring. It's easy to feel that the Who where good friends happy to play together, and everyone wish to be friends with them. Led zep ? It's not obvious that they are happy to play together.

David Jones Thank you for sharing. I used to live in Leeds too, from 2009-2012. Studying music at Leeds college of music. I'm originally from Norway tho. In 2012 me and a band that I was playing with at the time were suppose to play a gig there...but something happened, so we had moved the gig somewhere else. I remember we talked about 'how to fill this room with our sound' because back then we didn't have a proper equipment to make it sound good or even loud enough, without sounding shit. haha good times :-)

One of the greatest of all time live recordings that was ever made. Hey, ya gotta remember, this was 1970. It might have been in late 69. The planet was still forming back then. And no one , and i mean no one, was doing this at that time. Deep Purple? not even close. Stones? no comparison. This was the first wall of sound that blew their hair pieces off. And it lifted a few skirts too.
@Sargebri

This was really when they were really at the peak of their powers and when they really became the best live band in the world. Ironically, they said that this wasn't a great performance. They said the show at Hull a few days before was even better and they were going to release that as the live album, but something happened to the recordings and the tapes were ruined. Still, this was one helluva gig for them.
@grahambrown5013
@grahambrown5013 5 жыл бұрын
The show at Hull the following day does survive and it was put out as an album years ago. In my opinion, the sound/mix wasn't as good as the Leeds show and Keith's drumming was a bit on the sloppy side. The bass was pretty much missing from the first five or six songs due to recording issues but as the set list was almost identical to the Leeds show the previous night, the engineers "lifted" the bass track from that and incorporated it onto the Hull tracks.
@Sargebri
@Sargebri 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I had always heard there was a malfunction and that's why they didn't release it. AsI said, this was when they were really peaking. However my favorite gig of their's from that year was the Isle of Wight. That will always be their greatest performance.

The original vinyl album only had six tracks, but various re-releases over the years have included additional tracks until the full show was released on CD years ago. I have the original vinyl album still in its original "bootleg" sleeve with all the bits of paper and the famous "Maximum R & B " poster that were included inside. Then, the entire show was half speed remastered and released on heavyweight vinyl spread across six sides in 2016.

I noticed there are 40 thumbs down here. I wonder who had the nerve to do the thumbs down. They know this is not today's Corporation, Cookie Cutter Rock and it certainly isn't Crap Rap. This is classic Rock. Back when music was music no matter if you listened to Rock, Soul, Country, it was FAR better than this trash passing for music today. Back when this was on the air, we determined what we liked and what we wanted to hear. Today, the corporations tell society what they want to hear,and what they will listen to. So those who give and gave a thumbs down I say thumbs down to you and leave.

My favorite live tune. Amaxing free-form guitar work by Townsend. Grest dinging. Driving and creative bass work. And of course the usual spectacular drum work by Moon. I think Moon was the greatest hard-rock drummer. I don't even notice the tune is 14 minutes. Incredible. The best.

Riding my bike age 10 with my transistor. Could not believe my ears. Age 15, high, at a party, I was able to release my joy at this brilliant song. (Dancing, don't worry, nothing freaky).
