Few Rock guitarists can simultaneously play rhythm and lead as coherently as Pete can, or used to. His age is a real part of what that judgement would be, but this man led many to what we now know as Rock and Roll, or Maximum R&B. Keep the Roll remaining in this art form, kids!

+1ericamat Agreed. This past go around, it seems like Pete can no longer (or no longer wants to) sing, either back ups or leads. On The Who Hits 50 tour, the most singing he did (after they stopped playing A Quick One - A real shame), only Eminence Front was full on Pete. I wonder if he has throat issues.

He was the lead guitarist for The Who and whilst I hear what you're saying, people really underestimate his talent as a lead guitarist. He introduced many innovations like feedback and others ( :) I'm not a guitar player, but I'm sure others can add what his skills were). I'm a big fan of David Gilmore, Jimmy Paige etc, but in my humble opinion, Pete was up there with them.
@rocknrog52
@rocknrog52 2 жыл бұрын
@@robthornton6288 I have been a fan since 1964 (I Can't Explain). Yes, Pete was a great lead, and mostly rhythm guitar player. His songwriting was second to none. No band can claim to be a better iteration of maximum R&B and no rock band defined their era as well as The Who. Tommy and Quadrophenia are iconic and brilliant. And they are still killing it live with incredible energy. Live At Leeds and Who's Next got me through a lot of youthful angst. Who Came First mellowed me out when I was going nuts. All respect.

I dig how Zak makes himself totally mod with the haircut and cool suit. I think Zak is the only drummer I could really accept in the shadow of Keith. I like Kenny Jones but Roger was right, he just wasn't a good fit. Just sayin'.
@PAULLONDEN
@PAULLONDEN 8 жыл бұрын
+steviea427 Ok ...These pensioners were bloody lucky to get Ringo Starr junior behind their kit..but are they in about 2 year also moaning .."Zak also wasn't able to fill Moon's place"...? It seemed a somewhat stab in the back to say that about Jones.....they themselves were the ones that hired him somewhat opportunistic because of Small Faces credentials and as such a crowd puller..... No one is able to replace the ''Patent British Exploding Drummer''..... Zak looks bloody good ....but he's not more than an able drummer, and most likely also chosen because of his background... Just like The Stones, there's something pathetic about old men desperately clinging on to old glory... what have these classic bands done the last 30 years to make them seem valid ? They have it easy ,because they haven't got credible opposition.... I remember Jagger 30 years ago mumbling ''I don't like nostalgia, It's too comfy''.......not if it rakes in the millions ofcourse......
@steviea427
@steviea427 8 жыл бұрын
+PAULLONDEN I can't argue with you. When you're right you're right. Moonie was a unique phenomenon and impossible to replace. It was a crappy move to hire and fire Kenny Jones like that. Zak has the pedigree and does his job. You are definitely correct about the dinosaur bands that have no competition. They are baby-boomer bands and baby-boomers will always buy tickets and go to see them (as long as they can get home by 11:00, they are getting older every day). The Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac, Paul Mccartney, Rush, U2, Eagles, Rod Stewart, (and others I can't think of right now) all sell lots of tickets and merchandise and generate huge sums of money. These bands give their audience what they want: Nostalgia and the illusion that they are not REALLY as old as they are. Rock and Roll is big business and the lure of big money is too much to resist, so these bands go out and play the same stuff they have been playing forever. There is definitely no danger or rebellion with any of these bands (which was the whole point way back when). The baby-boomers are such a huge demographic that they have dominated every phase of culture that they have gone through, from the 60s and on till now. I agree that there is something pathetic about the whole thing (do they REALLY need the money...still?) Capitalism engulfs everything it touches, and there are good and bad points to it, but you are right about the clinging to old glory. Peace Bro, Steve.

+steviea427 : Zak is absolutely great. Kenney Jones only got the job because he had been around helping the Who out in the studio during rehearsals for the Who Are You album on the days that Keith wasn't well enough. Upon Keith's death, Phil Collins - major fan, major drummer, phoned Townshend and offered his services as he was prepared to leave Genesis to join The Who. Townshend told him that Jones was going to get the gig. Simon Phillips was also very good in that late `80's tour.
