The Wicked Bible

At Exodus 20:14, the so-called "Wicked Bible" contains the strange commandment, "Thou Shalt Commit Adultery". The "not" is nowhere to be seen, giving perfideous readers the divine green-light to cheat to their heart's content. It was not the work of a secret society, nor a version of the original text, but a typo; and a pretty bad one at that.
In this video, let's look at the collection of "Bible errata". Or as I like to call them "Biblical Bloopers". From the "Unrighteous Bible" that favours the sinners to the "Owl Bible" that speaks of a group of owl husbands. All the product of an unfortunate lack of proofreading. I'll also take you though what "bloopers" scholars believe have been preserved in the text since ancient times; exploring Jesus was actually called Joshua and why robes, not camels, were more unlikely to be threaded through the eyes of needles.
As my term starts, I'm going to have to upload less frequently unfortunately. As much as I enjoy making videos, I've also got to get my degree! That said, I'll keep uploading and so continue Season II. I've got to balance my commitments for the time being.
On the cusp of 200k subscribers. Thank you all so much :)
H.

@@darcy3439 the problem is then it become subjective to decide which passages are literal and which are not. Even bible experts can't agree on the exegesis of certain passages, and with the amount of sects within Christianity, it's hard to find an authority which will agree on the exact meaning without being biased towards their sect's beliefs. That's why I always found Christianity in America especially as diverting from the original message. Nowadays you have certain churches doing mime acts during funerals with full on face paint and dancing, something which Jesus never said to do nor did. Paganism has infiltrated the original message of Jesus and corrupted it

@Pingwn
@Pingwn 2 жыл бұрын
@@barney1942 connecting those two spastic things is kind of random, typically there is some connection, some context to the metaphor and not just a random example of something. Granted there is an Aramaic phrase from the Jewish sages about passing an elephant through the hole of a niddle, which makes a bit more sense since if you want to use an animal that represents something big you are more likely to choose an elephant rather than a camel. The point still stands - this is kind of very random example for something Impossible to do where it would have been easier to choose more intuitive examples of impossible tasks.
@Greggery
@Greggery 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think he was arguing whether or not the camel line was right or wrong he just meant that a rope would have had better context in the metapor since we use string for needles, and a rope is an exaggerated form of the string which still would have the same outcome as you stated which it's an impossible task easier than the rich being righteous
@DevinBradleySmith
@DevinBradleySmith 2 жыл бұрын
The needle was slang for an arch in Jerusalem that just barely fit a camel! So the camel had to be stripped of all of it’s baggage to pass through. So the meaning becomes “strip yourself of worldly things to enter the kingdom of God” :)

And depending on which branch of Christianity you can have somewhere between 66 and 82 books of biblical canon (plus the Mormon church add in The Book Of Mormon and I think another few texts). Speaking of the Mormons, they believe that most versions of the Bible are full of mistakes- whatever made them think that.

Yeah it's like a really well written story with intricate details that are easily glossed over but can serve a really important purpose even though I'm an atheist too

@@jesseskd04 Then you can read the Roman Messiah...or how Christianity was formed by the Roman Emperor, Titus Favius, employing Josephus to "marry" the predictions of the OT to the man just crucified as the Messiah..It was to convince the rebellious Jews, that he was..The Jews would've had none of it, as their Messiah was going to be a Warrior, to take them away from under the Roman rulers..

For the camel and the eye of the needle, I think the end meaning is the same. To become rich more often than not (overwhelmingly more often at that) means you have to give into the sins of greed, lust, and pride. The vast majority of the rich become rich off the suffering and extortion of others, so it would be about as easy to pass a rope or camel through the eye of a needle, as it would for them to get into heaven (which is to say, impossible).

A similar metaphor about the camel going into the eye of the needle is mentioned in the Quran (bible of muslims), ["Surely those who receive our revelations with denial and arrogance, the gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until (a camel) passes through the eye of a needle. This is how We reward the wicked. "] -Surah Al-A'raf Verse 40. Here the word camel in Arabic can be pronounced in two ways according to scholars. First, as "Al-Jamal" meaning camel the animal while others pronounced it a little bit differently as "Al-Jommal" which in Arabic doesn't require the changing of letters, meaning the big ropes used aboard ships.

I recon when they say, “it is easier for a camel to go though the eye of the needle” (a sewing needle) ,they are implying that doing that impossible task would be easier then someone rich getting into heaven. As normally wealth has nothing to do with going to heaven. At least that how I take it. Quick edit: I don’t think it’s meant to be taken literally and it could have been a figure speech back then.

6:37 In Croatia we have saying "pokušavaš provući slona kroz ušicu igle", translated to English: "you try to put elephant trough the eyes of a needle" when someone is trying something impossible The reason why we chose elephant specifically is beacuse something as huge as elephant is compared to go trough something so tiny as the eyes of a needle So that story with camel is not as obscure in my opinion

In regards to the eye of a needle story, don’t you essentially get the same message with either version, being that the thing in question has too much to enter/pass through and should rid themselves of excess?

So I get asked a lot about why I’m not a Christian anymore and honestly it can be summed up to one single verse in Revelations 21:8 (KJV) “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” This doesn’t sound like a god… this sounds like a very angry human who is basically trying to scare his subordinates into believing that if they simply lie, they will burn forever… this sounds very human to me, this doesn’t sound like a father talking to his children, this isn’t how a groom talks to his bride, this doesn’t sound like a Shepard talking to his sheep, this sounds like a sadistic priest who got tired of his friends getting laid.
