They took a long walk, after which the man accompanied Clea home and asked, "Clea, will we see each other again? I absolutely hate to part with you! But you must promise that tomorrow you will allow me to meet you from work again and agree to have dinner with me!"
That night, the girl had trouble sleeping as her thoughts were consumed by her new acquaintance. Clea, experiencing these emotions for the first time, didn't yet realize that she had fallen in love.
She wished she could fast-forward time to the next evening, just to meet Eric sooner. It wasn't until early morning that she was finally able to fall asleep with a happy smile on her face.
From that day on, Eric started meeting her after her work every day in his expensive car, causing whispers of disapproval from Clea's colleagues at work.
No one could believe that a poor girl from an orphanage, who lived in a small room on the outskirts of the city with no money, was involved in a relationship with a mature wealthy man purely out of love.
People speculated about the girl's ulterior motives, accusing her of using Eric for personal gain. But they couldn't comprehend that Clea couldn't bear to go a day without seeing Eric. She was willing to spend the entire day just listening to him, taking in his expensive perfume, and feeling the touch of his hands.
After a month of dating, Clea visited Eric's beautiful country house. The rooms were light, cozy, and featured huge floor-to-ceiling windows.
As she looked around, she couldn't help but wonder how much time it took to clean and wash all of those windows. Unfortunately, quite soon, she was able to figure it out by herself. And it happened right after they got married!
A couple of weeks after their wedding, Eric embraced his young wife and said, "Darling, I've been thinking. Why do we need a stranger in the house? And besides, it's an unnecessary expense. So I've let go of the housekeeper. You're young and full of energy, especially since you're not working right now. I believe you can handle everything on your own."
Blinded by love for her husband, Clea didn't even consider the possibility that Eric had married her for certain purposes, except for his love for her.
But the ugly truth was that he needed a young and beautiful companion by his side to elevate his status as a wealthy and family-oriented man in high society. Moreover, he knew that a girl from an orphanage wouldn't have high expectations or demands.
And so it went. If before the wedding Eric showed Clea some signs of affection, like giving her flowers and gifts, after the wedding she became nothing more than a cover for his successful life and also a housekeeper and a cook, all rolled into one.
And when Clea finally mustered the courage to mention this a year into their marriage, Eric coldly dismissed her, saying, "What more do you want? You're living in paradise!
A beautiful house, a renowned husband, and all the clothes you could dream of. If you're not satisfied, feel free to leave with your belongings. I've been married four times, and finding a fifth wife won't be a problem!"
That night, Eric was drunk and Clea cried all night, but convinced herself that it was the alcohol talking. She desperately wanted to believe that everything would be okay between her and Eric.
There were moments when he was tender and gentle. There were evenings when he would come home from work and say, "Darling, tonight we won't be having dinner at home. Put on your best outfit, let's go to our favorite restaurant."
On those nights, they would look at each other affectionately, just like before. They would drink champagne and dance to beautiful slow tunes. In those moments, Clea was willing to put up with her husband's occasional bad moods, blaming them on his demanding job.
During the first years of their marriage, Clea held on to hope that she would give her husband a child and complete their family. But then Eric suddenly confessed, "I'm sorry, dear, but we can't have children. Well, I can't. But it's okay, right?"
