The Wild Story of How Micronauts Keeps Getting Canceled

Micronauts is a toyline created by Mego in the late 70's just before Star Wars swallowed pop culture and not long before Mego went out of business.
Micronauts, the toyline, was very successful but the numerous attempts at animated series, comic book series and movies since have definitely been less successful.

Man, the original Micronauts comics by Bill Mantlo and drawn by the amazing Mike Golden were some of my very favorite comics when I was a kid. And, of course, I loved the Micronauts toys. My best friend and I had a deal that we would give each other Micronauts toys as birthday presents every year and that way build up an amazing collection between us.

This movie will be drastically different than anything you’re familiar with in the toy line and will be wildly different than the comic or the cartoon. They did, but that was a blip in history since they had quality control issues. Takara brought the Microman series in America with the wave inspired by the Journey to the West novel; they were exclusive to Kaybee Toys. However, unlike the Japanese version, they had issues with the plastic cracking. Other than that, there were no difference other than the boxes being translated.

I met Ken Kelly a couple of years ago at a Rock and Roll convention where I had a table selling what I call art. He was a featured artist there and was being treated like royalty for his work on the Kiss album covers. He came by my booth very early in the first day of the show and was completely enthralled by a plastic skull I had painted, pretty convincingly, to look like dirty, rusted steel. We struck up a conversation about the piece and he said he had 16 skulls in his studio and this would be the 17th. Then for the rest of the weekend he would just randomly show up at my booth and we would chat about lots of things, even to the point of giving me crap for not being set up to take credit cards. Anyway, it wasn't until we finalized the deal for the skull that I found out that he was the artist for the Micronauts, which was much more exciting than his album cover work to me. He is a kind, friendly, gracious gentleman who even re-tweeted my tweet about selling him the skull. A treasured memory for sure.

intzbk1 Yeah, the Micronauts met at least the FF, S.H.I.E.L.D. Mentallo & The Fixer; and I particularly remember Rom acting as Galactus' herald, and working with Mystique's Brotherhood ("Sisterhood actually, being her Rogue, & Destiny), against his Dire Wraith enemies. Both were pretty well integrated into the Marvel universe. In addition to occasionally still seeing Marionette, Arcturus Rann, and Bugg; I remember Marvel once brought back Rom and some of his fellow cyborgs, with their human bodies restored, in a new series, The Space-Knights of Galador I think it was called. It used only Marvel created material from the old series so I thought maybe they'd be an ongoing part of Marvel's intergalactic community, but haven't seen them in a while.

Re: the movie: If you're not going to follow through with a movie that is either based on the toys lore (though that seems to be very very thin) or on the comics (preferably in my opinion the original run of Marvel books), then don't bother. How many flops do they need to endure before they understand you need to be true to the story, lore and characters? Look at Jem and the Holograms? A huge flop, because they didn't even try to adapt the story. If JJ Abrams, or whoever ends up writing the movie, wants to do something "really really cool" but is not based on the comic...then call it something else and don't slap the brand name on it in a lazy attempt to get that nostalgia. Or...do right by the story, the characters, and give the fans of this property the movie they deserve.

Technically “Bug” corresponds to the Micronauts’s toy “Galactic Warrior”. The one most often found in green that came with the spring missile shooter. The confusion that Bug was a wholly Marvel character and not tied to the toys caused some problems in recent years when James Gunn wanted to use him for Guardian’s of the Galaxy and found the licensing and rights surrounding him too complicated. (Marvel can still use Arcturus Aran, Marionette and Bug, rebranded as the “Microns” but only in comics. Not movies.)

If there was ever an argument for monopolizing media, it's that it would simplify all this licensing garbage...then again...if we had Copyright/trademark/yaddayadda laws that actually made sense, most everything would eventually make it to the public domain so we wouldn't have to worry about it.

Andrew Taylor : Marvel/Bill Mantlo occasionally had Bug referee to as "a galactic warrior" but nothing about him was based on the figure. That's why they can still use him; Marionette- who doesn't correspond to any Micronaut figure I've ever seen or heard of; and somewhat surprisingly Arcturus Rann - who was was clearly a Space Glider, slept in a sarcophagus-like time chamber similar to Pharoid, and whose subconscious "created" the Time Travelers - but like Bug and Marionette, Mantlo/Marvel did create the Arcturus Rann name/identity. Of those three characters, I liked Bug's IMAGE comix counterpart, the proto-Antron insect humanoid, the best. A meeting between them might be fun to see, but highly unlikely since the new guy (whose name currently eludes me), being officially based on Antrons is more legally bound to the figures.

@@anthonyhero9605 This wasn't the first time Marvel had a "who owns it" crisis. *Circuit Breaker* , a regular human "villain" in the Transformers comics, is technically owned by Marvel because she appeared ONCE in a cameo in Secret Wars II before her other 1st appearance in Transformers #9. Marvel UK's Transformers gave us *Death's Head* . Death's Head was introduced as a robot bounty hunter hired by Rodimus Prime to search for any sign of Galvatron after their battle inside of Unicron. After much activity in the years 2005 and 2006, eventually he gets downsized (to human proportions) and spends time in Marvel's Doctor Who books before getting his own Marvel Universe series(-es). What makes DH a Marvel character and not a Transformer/Hasbro Bradley property is one appearance in a Marvel UK anthology prior to his Transformers story arc.

Jay Smith : yeah, he *tik* and Acroyer were my faves (yeah I know in the Japanese prototype-toys Acroyers were the enemy, but with Bugg we're talking comix here). I luaus wished MEGO had released a figure that was based on Bugg, or at least better approximated him. Closest I ever got was customizing/creating a figure to be him. The green Galactic Warrior or an Antron seemed the best choices for customizing.

I was too young for the toys, but I was given the whole run of comics by an older friend in the late 80s. They are unexpectedly great, and New Voyages ends in an epic fashion.

I absolutely loved the Micronaut toys a child and I have to say that the Micronauts Marvel Comic was extremely well crafted and written. When I heard that the new film by J.J. Abrams Badrobot Productions has nothing to do with the original Marvel Comic series, not only did that make me pretty sad but very skeptical as well ! Like everyone else, I haven’t been too impressed with Abrams’ recent work and output so I don’t know how I feel about his Micronauts treatment. If the film gets made It will be a miracle. I just hope that the Micronaut toys will one day live again! Great video as usual and I look forward to seeing the next one! Cheers!

Great vid! Didn't know there was some much backstory to the Micronauts brand, lol. I remember my brother had a few along with the tube things. I got the bigger Karza & Force Commander figures but that was about it. I do recall the original Marvel comic being really good though and always wanted more of those representations of Bug & Acroyear. The new IDW comics were pretty good. Would really love for Hasbro to find the secret to having all those properties exist together. Great pieces, just got to find the right glue.

Just a little clarification on the Image Comic series. That series was also by Devil's Due. It was just while the studio was under the Image umbrella. They left Image about a year or so later and went into full publishing mode. So at this point only three publishers have existed - Marvel, Devil's Due - under Image and then solo,, and IDW. Great video btw. Love this franchise. Just wish we could see the property back at Marve for comicsl where it was handled the best.

Just want to say almost everyone I talked with from high-school to first job, if the subject of childhood toys came up (which oddly happens a lot with me), they had no idea what on earth a Micronaut was and I was always a bit disheartened. (Same with Brixo Blocks that I thought were Brix o Blocks) I only had the toys as the cartoon never aired in our region. I was so excited, joyful, dumbfounded and grateful when my parents got me those guys. A prayer of thanksgiving went up to God I recall. I loved the idea of the modularity as I explained it in seven year old speak and that they moved as vehicles when combined. It was such a great time filled with possibility and fun. I never knew why no one else ever heard of them. Same with Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors or Ziv Zulander and the Bots Master. Toons & toys lost to time. Thanks for bringing the knowledge on the backstory - and a smile to my heart. Thank you, Thank you - I love this series. Subscribe Accomplished. DJ xSUBn ({^_^ })
