Basil of Caesarea was a bishop in the early Church who served in what is modern-day Turkey. Known as a Cappadocian Father, he instrumental in shaping the language some churches use surrounding the Holy Spirit. Bridging the generation from the Nicene Creed of 325 A.D. and the Council at Constantinople in 381, it was Basil’s language, possibly more than that of any other Christian leader, which helped produce the expanded confession on the Holy Spirit in the Creed of 381.
In order to defend orthodox belief, Basil was forced to confront his long-term mentor, Eustathius of Sebaste over his failure to worship the Holy Spirit as divine. The heart of the issue was the prepositions being used about the Holy Spirit. Eustathius and his camp claimed that Basil was giving too much glory to the Holy Spirit and that ultimately the Holy Spirit should not be worshiped alongside the Father and the Son. For Basil, this was unsatisfactory because it denied what he saw in Scripture and the earliest teachings of the church.

St. Vladimir’s is producing the best English translations of many of the Fathers. It’s always nice to have a brief introduction and footnotes on ancient texts. I deeply appreciate the work they are doing

Thanks for the feedback! It’s an interesting transition from leading a small group or preaching on a Sunday to sitting in my basement talking to a camera. It’s always good to hear from the live humans on the other side. :-)

You’re welcome! Thanks for taking the time to comment. My knowledge of Orthodox Christianity is limited. I’ve studied the church through the first thousand years in East and West. My specialization is in renewal movements. John Wesley and the early Methodists are the focus of my dissertation. I’d love to know more though!

So, Basil helped to begin the first hospital? I see this as an amazing example of being "salt" in the world. The pagan Greek culture to my understanding would "weed" out the incurable from entering treatment at their SPA's and accept only those that had a chance of recovering through human efforts and able to afford treatment. I will be replaying this video again. I must try to catch you when you're "live".

There were spas and shrines where the sick were prayed for or cared for, but Basil is widely credited with the first place where medical treatment was added to that physical and spiritual care.

@@UBU41God A Ph.D. in Christian history should be good for something. 😉 The degree title will be Renewal Theology, but my concentration is Christian history. I definitely can’t know everything, but I should be able to at least point you in a helpful direction.
