I watched a documentary of why a woman died, ended up frozen to death on a winter snow covered mountain in New Zealand. One of the contributing factors was that she was wearing top and bottom base layers with 100% cotton. The expert findings was that the base layers once wet with moisture, draw away her body heat. Cotton is most def a no no, in such extreme conditions! As for midlayers, a top mountaineer explained that he goes high end with base layers, soft outer shells, and hard shells; other than that he uses cheap insulating mid layers that just do the job of making himself comfortable. The odd time I look on Ebay for those high end products at a 1/2 to 1/3 price from those guys who used it once or twice and gave up! Love a good deal!

Thanks for watching Emily, I appreciate it 😊 I have my own preferred brands, we all do, but the trouble with pushing one brand or another is that videos can become non-inclusive as price is a barrier to lots of people. If it works, use it 👍

Another clear helpful video. I find a merino buff extremely useful in winter. It's cosy around my neck while I warm up but light and easy to stuff in my pocket if I get too warm. I also use it to keep my ears warm in a cold wind (with or without my hat depending on conditions), or over my nose and mouth in very cold conditions. I use buffs in summer to stop sunburn on my neck. Really handy in lots of ways.

We're new to this stuff so, since April we have been collecting layers (costly for 2 when you like Rab) We have put them to the test a lot and they work very well! I have hyperhidrosis so, a sweatband is also a must have! We've found that we need a smaller rain shell for summer and a larger one now, to go over the layers! I found you this morning and i have liked and subscribed! Great content and i love Petra!

From a Canadian point of view your information is very accurate in presentation in regards to effectiveness and cost. My only other preference is the addition of a hood to protect you from the wind. Turning your back to the wind with the hood up gives your face a chance to warm up when temperatures are extreme. I personally prefer some wool as a comfort factor as well as it’s ability to insulate even when wet. When you have no other options you just adjust layers as required. Bring one extra layer than you think is required because it does you no good hanging in you closet. Before you start your expedition start with a good meal to provide fuel for the stove in your body. Your body cannot burn what it does not have plus it is easier to carry by consuming rather than carry. Then you focus on enjoying the day.

Hi Shamus, another great video of yours. Like you I am a paramo lover and I think it would have been great to include that brand in your layering video. Of course it is not about the brand itself but more about its technology/design which as you for well, reduced the need for layering. I am a pro photographer (and fellow youtuber) based in Scotland and it took me over 10 years to find my perfect system with the Halcon jacket and dbh long sleeve neck zipped 200 merino base layer. The velcro system of the jacket lets me ventilate when in motion and the whole system shelters me from the scottish wind. I do have Rab Alpine light down jacket that I use in combination when in stationary for a while to retain heat. That is my long testimony. Any keep up the good work and if you ever come up to Scotland, I’d love to meet you.

I love the way you explained this and normally I do wear a cotton t shirt although I'm slowly changing that and with that I wear a cheap mountain warehouse thin flees thing and that normally does me until it gets very cold😁👍

Thank you for your clever insight. I’ve been resisting the purchase of technical tops, pretty sure it isn’t my best look, lol! But we went for a walk the other day, and the weather changed into a pretty blowy rain storm. We quickly realised my ordinary thick clothes weren’t up to the job, so we sat in the car and watched your video over a flask of coffee. Convinced, husband marched me off to a retail store! i’m now the proud owner of a long sleeved base, mid layer, rain coat, hat, gloves and boots. ( how lucky am I? ) I’ve worn them twice already, first for a cycle, then yesterday for a walk, what a difference it makes, thank you for giving us the nudge, there’s nothing stopping us enjoying a good walk now. P.S I love my old cheap water proof trousers too 😁👍

I've definitely picked up on my error. The base layer, it is rough on my nipples 😳 so I put a t-shirt under it.🙄. So I have a fitted t-shirt, base layer. Down jacket, gillet and outer jacket. I'll have to rethink that. Missing that Rab instead of the t-shirt but in the right order. The trousers. I'm new to this so I bought baselayer for under the trousers. Or as my wife calls it, tights without feet!!! But the interesting and important thing you did say was sizing. I bought large for everything. I think I need to visit 'GoOutdoors' with the layers on and try stuff on. Really appreciate this. Seen your bio. Incidentally years ago I worked at RCC Pitreavie Castle where all rescues from 52:30N and above were coordinated. We worked closely with the MRTs as well. Great guys. Much respect to you. I suspect that you worked a lot with our counterparts in the Southern Region at Plymouth before it was disbanded and handed over to civilian RCC. Worked at Pitreavie from 79-84. Lucky Prince Andrew......... not needing a base layer. Add a 'w' to 'layer ' is probably what he needs more. Another great video Shamus. I use the Montane Terra Trousers also. Amazing what difference the air vents in the side can make. Also handy to loosen them off when walking up steep hills. Just gives that bit more movement in the leg/knee area. Another great video Shamus, always look forward to your videos.

Shamus, just came across your channel courtesy of KZfaq's "random videos you might like". To be fair, I do watch rather a lot of outdoor related material. I have to say, it's was refreshing to watch a video on such an important subject, put across in an easy to understand way, by someone who clearly knows what they're talking about.

I love the way that you talk sense. There is so much crap spoken about kit but the essence is that you get what works for you. I always emphasise when I am training that should get the best kit that you can afford. So many times I see DofE parents buying stuff that their children don’t need. If you are only going to use it the once get the stuff from the DofE kit list. If you are going to do this bad a hobby get the best stuff for you. When I started out, and to be honest for a long time I became a gear whore. But over the years I have discovered that I go back to the same kit every time. Keep up the good work.

Absolutely, Ian 👍 Although I may use 'nice' gear, I use what I think will suite me. The outdoor market has a strong 'fashion drive' and unfortunately that never stands still 😊🐶

Thank you 😊 I take long johns and a long sleeve T to sleep in my bag. That's a fairly common practice. Your bag and mat should be your insulation and the tent / shelter is the shell. Wearing more clothes will help if you are feeling the cold, provided they aren't restrictive or damp.n👍

Big thumbs up, great video on the layering system. I always feel alittle pressured to buying the dearest and best gear but your right it's not all about the cost. As a landscape photographer I struggle sometimes finding the right clothing for the situation.

Thank you Karl 😊 It's a much underestimated activity, you have to carry quite a bit of kit in with you, so you are exerting quite a bit of energy, and then suddenly having to switch to a sedentary activity while you watch, adjust and wait - layering is so important for you, isn't it 👍

Exactly the system I use on the school run, often look very uncool but I’m cozy and dry so winning. I have to tell myself to put on gloves though, I never find them very comfortable so don’t tend to bother with them but always regret it when my hands start hurting.
