From July 1, India will have a whole new set of criminal laws. The Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act will be replaced by three new laws drafted and passed by the previous Union government. The Wire's Jahnavi Sen speaks to senior advocate in the Supreme Court Sanjay Hegde and The Wire's national affairs editor Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty about concerns that have been raised about this overhaul of the criminal justice system - from the chaos that we are likely to witness to what it means for civil liberties. The three also discuss the raging entrance exam scam in the country and what this means both politically and for students' futures, and Arvind Kejriwal's bail - granted by the trial court and stayed by the Delhi high court on Tuesday.

Being a Lawer for more than 23 years, i am very unsettled with the new Laws for the same reasons as enumerated in this discussion; beside that i am unnerved because of lack of any upgradation of the whole system before enforcing the new Laws & lack of any thorough analysis. I am also shocked rather depressed for not finding any voices in the legal fraternity for or against this critical milestone in our legal system. @sanjayHegde

Not only Judiciary but almost every independent constitutional agencies like EC, ED, CBI, IT, etc have saffronised by Sangh Parivaar to implement Manusmriti by the centenary year of RAJYADROHI Sangh Parivaar. But, people realised the threat of the antinationals and start reacting appropriately to save constitution and democracy.

An accused person cannot be anyhow kept in police custody more than 15 days, I personally think, 15 days is too much if not established crime , in many cases that can be reduced by considering different circumstances

These presentation is very much educative informative and may even educate Policymakers who initiated this misadventures to: Rename them into Hindi terms which is unfamiliar to the entire 2/3 of India except Hindi Belt. Law enforcement agencies are not familiar to enforce these 3 New laws in 1st July 2024, which may create a Chaos confusion in Criminal justice system in India. Hope good counsel prevail upon all those involved in this matter .

This is with reference to Adv Sanjay Hegde's reference to Pathalgadi movement, we should refer to the courage of the adivasis there and to Stan Swami who constantly was writing and talking about it and one of the 'real' reasons for his arrest and the subsequent custodial 'death'.

If during emergency Indira Gandhi had access to the new criminal laws including PMLA and UAPA enacted by BJP then she could HAVE ARRESTED all BJP leaders and put them in jail and they would have remained there till today without bail. Thats the difference between declared and undeclared emergency.

Modi in 2014 said "yeh committee vamitee sabh bandh", to speed up Good Governance as it was seen to hamper implementations. 2019 committee s introduced thru the back door to duck allegations. Come 2024, committee's formed and introduced from the front door to camouflage bad governance. A failed decade of chaos and confusion in governance.

Can you please do a piece / interview on how the laws wef 1/7 will impact the common citizen. There was talk of some broadcast laws where freedom of speech will be impacted, for voices of dissent, you tubers, citizens etc. If we write our views as posts on social media can there be consequences n repercussions and if yes , what can they be. As a citizen what shud I be aware/ cautious or careful about , esp visavis freedom of speech and expression.

India is being changed with two major goals in mind. Change constitution and all laws to make the country a Hindu state based on patriarchy and feudal practices. Pave the way for a fascist government in Delhi run by auotocrats and take away all powers from regions and states. These forces are studying various models like Russia and North Korea. Gradually elections will be discontinued and the next generation of autocrats will arrive. After this PM there will be ten more even more aggressive ones waiting to take over.
