Awesome video. Quick question. In my area I’m not doing much restoring. But I’m coming across a lot of pre-stained fences that are 5-10 years old and people want them “re-stained”. So what’s the best process to strip the old stain off? I’ve tried so many chemicals and strippers and just not sure which one is the best and easiest for me the contractor. I’m spending a fortune just trying different things out.

Do you need to clean the new fence somehow before staining? For some reason I can't find a clear answer anywhere, some advise just to powerwash, some to apply a fence cleaner before powerwash, some seems like don't do anything, just brush off w/huge brush and then stain. It is cedar fence I just put, but not sure about the question above. I would appreciate your professional opinion on this matter. Thank you for the great film.

Hello Everett, just a quik question about the Oxalic application. After applying the brightener I've always rinsed it off after 10 minutes or so. I was reading a article from Ready Seal and they recommended to not rinse off the acid at all. To leave it on to dry. What would you recommend?
@wizardofwood

Hello Chris, I always tell folks to always follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Ready Seal would speak for their products and you should follow their recommendations if that is the product you are using.

@@wizardofwood No it wasn't about using their product. I've used their stain in the past and do like it for an oil based stain but I prefer water based paints and stains over oil based. I was just looking over their sight about their cleaning and brightening practices. I go on tons of different sights with paints and stains just to view their products and application methods and saw where they said about cleaning and brightening. They said when brightening to always leave the oxylic on and Never rinse it off no matter what stain you're going to use. I questioned them by writing an email message and they responded with a huge letter back explaining why you should never rinse off the oxylic when brightening. That it will never lower the pH and brighten properly if you rinse it off even after 10 minutes, which by the way I do all the time and it works perfectly. I've always been taught that and every company I've known does that. Maybe they know something I don't lol. I was just wondering what your thoughts are on that matter. Thanks.

Hello sir I live in San Antonio Texas, And would like to start purchasing your products. Your videos have been extremely informative and I have a question… Have you found a way to remove sprinkler water stains before applying a transparent/semi transparent stains? I’m having issues on cedar fences that are only a few weeks old and have white sprinkler water stains, after restoring the fence prior to staining by using an oxidized bleach via your method. For an even finish I’m not sure if Im stuck using a solid stain or not. But on a brand new fence I sure would like to stay with a transparent, or semi transparent stain. I greatly appreciate your time, and if you offer classes regularly I would like to attend one.

Is the brushing always necessary? Also, what would be the ideal pressure to use on wood to prevent furring/fuzzing? Would it be best practice to just use a garden hose to rinse? Awesome vid. Subscribed and liked.
@wizardofwood
@wizardofwood 4 жыл бұрын
You do not always have to agitate with a brush. Only in cases with heavy growth ideally the chemicals should be lifting everything off. This goes right into pressure. Again it should be the chemicals doing most of the work and following up with high volume and low pressure to rinse. You can absolutely use a garden hose but usually we use a pressure washer with the white 40 degree tips keeping the pressure under 1000 PSI. Thank you for subscribing! more videos will be coming soon!

With Sodium Percarbonate, is there a maximum water temperature you don't want to go beyond when mixing to dissolve it?
@wizardofwood

We usually just mix it down in warm water doesn't have to be really hot. Just warm enough to help dissolve the powder. You want to avoid hot water when restoring wood as it raises the grain and makes for blotcy and inconsistent coverage when staining or sealing.

Could you imagine sanding down an entire fence!? I've done a couple decks before that someone spilled some paint on and it is a pain in the rear. Any place that is sanded looks different to any of the other deck even when new and it is a lot of sanding pads and a lot of work to get an even finish with your stain. Wood is one thing especially old I've had some trouble with in the past and look for a way to get a good even finish when staining these old decks and it is pretty difficult. The customers do not understand the amount of work that goes into that most if the time...it's not just spraying on some stain lol but if that's what they want...🤷‍♂️

No, you would apply and allow the proper dwell time for the product. Then you rinse off at low pressure with a pressure washer. We recommend under 1000psi on all wood. Specifically though 600 or less on a cedar fence. PT can take a little more but, rule of thumb is just enough to get the job done.

You can.... if you watch the video he says that. The way it's done here is for demonstration and that he's in a hotel parking lot to show the differences. SH only bleaches what it contacts and turns a white ish bleach color and longevity is not where it needs to be as it will become spotty after a few months to a year....pressure washing to rinse this requires you to "dig" in more of you want to break that surface junk free and get rid of the bleached surface you just created. Otherwise you're leaving it looking "white" and the customer will see it start to change to ugly again not that long after you leave. SM strips those layers of by Chem means and allows them to be blown off with a fast pressure washer rinse..... and leaves behind the wood's color and not a white bleached surface that will continue to change after you leave. Scrubbing would only be needed if you're Chem mix is weak or in tight slots that would need hand scrubbing no matter what process you're using. You will need to rinse... not "let it dry and stain" because you want to remove the surface junk the chemical broke up and get rid of it before brightening and staining.

@@thelog86 just because you do your fence doesn't make you an expert. Actually this is very technical and understanding your chemicals and how they react is IMPORTANT! Not only for the saftey of your employees and clients but also your bottom line. And your slight toward guys educating themselves about the business their in so they can do it right and provide expertise to the work they are doing is really insulting. Fact of the matter is that there's all different surface types and tons of different wood and ages of wood that is worked with by us pros..... having a firm grasp of the actual capability of the chemicals you are using ON SOMEONE ELSE'S BELONGINGS is NOT a bad thing. Learning how to do things faster with a more desirable end product is also not a bad thing. Having a business and training someone how to do it and offering them the supplies they need to do it is also NOT A BAD THING. There over a dozen people standing there, on just this one training, paying for this info and probably hundreds ordering chemicals from him and your tone suggest they are all fools for spending their money with this guy so they can educate themselves on alternate process other than what they already know, learn ahead of time without experimenting on their actual clients belongings or from making a possible huge mistake that could cost them thousands to rectify and deliver an end product that they want for their business and clients. You have no idea how many different wood and finish combos we see every week, nevermind, every year. Any info that is learned to save time, not make a mistake and cause damage, save money, save supplies and materials, deliver superior results, or learn a process you didn't already know and know WHY you are doing it the way you are is worth its weight in gold. You're very bitter and close minded for a same fence once every 3 years guy. Some questions if are able to answer: 1) You named the chemicals in the demo, but your website shows product names. Which chemicals are in which products? 2) The demo seemed to be oriented from least to best, left to right. But, it seemed like everyone was focused on sodium metasilicate. Is that the best, or is it the lye? It was difficult to tell from the video. 3) Does the wood restoration manual sold on your website talk about all these chemicals and show exactly the mixing ratios needed (if doing it from scratch), or does it reference using only your products by product name? 4) If there is one of the demo chemicals that is primarily used in your cleaning products, which is the go to one? Or, are there different level products that use different level chemicals shown in the video? 5) What is the difference between the cleaner and the stripper products, chemically, referring back to the demo? Not asking for any formulas. In all, I'm just trying to connect the dots between the chemicals referenced in the demo video and your products. And, if it's all covered in the manual, I can look at getting that to get all my answers. Thank you!

1) In the 2lb DIY products the Cleaner is a sodium percarbonate. The Cleaner/Remover is Sodium Metasilicate. In the 5Gal Contractor grade. The Restorer is sodium Metasilicate and the Stripper is Sodium Hydroxide. And the Brighteners are oxalic acid 2) We also show demos as good, better, best. The Metasilicate that is our restorer tends to be our most used. However no job will be the same and there is no perfect product for all applications. 3) The manual is not product specific. It doesnt go to far into dilution rates but helps you get an idea of what can mixed together and what strengths to use 4) As stated before our most used would be the Deck & Wood Restorer which is sodium metasilicate. However no product is perfect for every job. Wood restoration isn't always as easy one product. It changes job by job. 5) The Restorer is a strong cleaner and a mild stripper when diluted less. The stripper in some instances can be mixed weaker and used as a cleaner as well. Again back to the knowing your chemicals and using them the way it makes sense on a job.

Are you saying to hand scrub the whole fence?
@wizardofwood
@wizardofwood 4 жыл бұрын
mowerdog, certainly not! This was for the demo and to further illustrate that products restore wood not pressure. Use a pump up sprayer, 12v sprayer, or a good sprayer to apply chemicals and products. Then a low pressure rinse and you will be good!

Certainly not a TWP expert but I believe they have different series. I believe some use linseed oil and others do not. This is not dissimilar with other manufacturers who have different product lines.

So you have to scrub the fence ? That would take forever doing a whole back yard .. inside and out ? Lol working 2x as hard if you were just to put some soap on there and hit it with low pressure .. bet $100 I could do it my way and let him do it his way .. and I’ll be done way sooner than he would and would look exact same lol

It is mentioned the different methods. This was merely for a demonstration on chemicals and the differences and how they work. No one would scrub an entire fence.

@@wizardofwood I've noticed that many people who "watch" these videos get absolutely hung up on your demonstration method and neither actually watched or listened to the video where you very clearly explain the process which doesn't include a hand brush and a 2gal bucket. Some of us inevitably listen and pay attention though so thank you on our behalf.

Why restoration? This could damage a bit the wood and grey is not bad. You just want it to look new because the standard for new is brown so you buy something that is basically useless as it fullfills an imaginary restoration...

Actually organics and gray wood not protected, shorten the life of the wood. This is “why” restoration.

@@wizardofwood Sh there is no scrubbing and you get the same if not better results than are in this video. Way too many low quality internet trap stars running around spraying bleach on everything, pretending to understand chemistry, and spouting lousy business and marketing slogans.
