Some women stayed and set up a peace camp outside the airbase which expanded to thousands at its peak and remained for 19 years. Ann Pettitt explains why she and other women were prepared to leave families and jobs to sleep out in the cold to try to stop a nuclear war.

And didn't the government microwave these heroic women, causing neurological damage? It would be interesting to find out how their health proceeded following

It affected some womens thyroid glands and we had to warn women who were pregnant or wanting to conceive to not come to camp. Some got terrible headaches. It also affected the squadies who lived beside us, albeit on the other side of the fence. I was at bloo gate, mostly.
