The Wood Common - a legendary UK CARP

This month see's me back on the historical Spitfire Pool in Norfolk, home of one of the finest carp in the UK, The Wood Common. It hasn't been on the bank for two years, but luck is on my side when it trips up at 9am on the 16th April. Weighing in at a lake record 53lb 4oz, it is without a doubt one of the finest carp of my career. The film features footage of the days leading up to its capture and the tactics I used to bank it. It also shows it being weighed and photographed, before being returned to its wonderful weedy home.

Well Simon. I have watched this before and loved it. I put it on again this morning (Boxing Day) for my 79 year old Mam and she absolutely loved it. When you lifted the Wood Common up she was flabergasted. So...thanks for entertaining me Mam!!!

I bet mate, taken back by its beauty and colouring. One of the nicest carp in the country, without doubt!! Still doing a little bit now and again, so still keeping my eye in mate, even if most of my fishing is done in the sea. Best wishes to you and yours. 👍

I noticed that in the video you filmed a few seconds of a full moon then caught a huge common... I have had so many experiences and so have my fishing pals where big commons have been caught on a full moon. Too many for it to be a coincidence... do you think there is anything in this ?? Great catch btw

Mattie Mclean Thanks Mattie, I need a bit more theory with moon phases. I’m not writing them off but I’ve not seen conclusive evidence they have an effect on carp in Lakes 👍

@@SimonCrow Yes I'm with you in that sense... no conclusive evidence as such...I think either Rod Hutchinson or Tim Paisley wrote an article on it once (?) but I cant remember which book/publication it was in! All the best.

Superb fish! Just a quick question, when casting your supple rigs.. do you use a foam nugget or pva stick to straighten your rig out on the drop? Ive found that the bait drops on top of the lead myself using foam!

What did you catch it on I would use maggots or casters on a lake like that with that many naturals learnt that from Terry Hearn

Depends if the fish is known too come out on bait or naturals some will love a boilie some will avoid them at all costs that’s part of the puzzle you need too find out in that water or for that fish
