Qatar's winning bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup in 2010, ahead of Australia, Japan, South Korea, and the United States, shocked the entire world.
Qatar is a tiny country in the Persian Gulf which had no football pedigree, no football infrastructure, insufficient transport and accommodation facilities, a dreadful human rights record, and where it is far too hot in the summer to play a World Cup.
Twelve years on, the bad news is that Qatar have proven to be even more unsuitable and shameful World Cup hosts than even their biggest critics anticipated, but the good news is that their $220 billion project has failed on its own terms before the World Cup has even begun - as HITC Sevens explores in this half hour documentary.

I like the way people are saying just because the world cup ended up being a success in terms of entertainment, qatar should be praised. Literally every country got involved with construction, all qatar had to do was pay them. And the best part is that Qatar ended up being the WORST host technically as they lost all 3 games on home soil, never done by any host before. So in truth, the world is to praise and not qatar.

Concerning the topic that host nations don't make money by hosting the tournament: I actually think when Germany hosted the 2006 World Cup it made them as a nation money because of the good reputation. And also for the people itself it was a great time. Something that united them and gave them something to build an identity on
@chrislouis7913
@chrislouis7913 Жыл бұрын
I think for the countries of Germany and Russia it would’ve made them some money. Germany wasn’t a country many were planning to visit or study in before 2006. Atleast not like France, america, Italy. Russia probably the same (at least for 2 or 3 years before the invasion turned the country to shit) as many fans or tourist probably assumed Russia was full of skinheads, hooligans and thugs. Wasn’t really the case even before 2018, but considering that most people from the west were too scared to visit russia, the World Cup in 2018 was probably the only way they were ever gonna break those stereotypes and invite tourists over.
@justinstoll4955

I think that really had to do with the fact the infrastructure (stadiums, internal travel accomodations, hotels, etc.) where pretty much already in place. Places that already have a significant amount of infrastructure (like stadiums it other facilities) for things like the Olympics and WC have made money like when LA hosted the Olympics. Places like Brazil, Russia, and Qatar have had to create everything from whole cloth, therby just sticking the public with a huge tax bill.

This KZfaqr is deliberately ignoring the fact that the $220 billion budget is for a long term development of the tourism industry in Qatar after the world cup. Only $12 billion of that budget goes to the World Cup 2022. To top it off Qatar did not build permanent stadiums. Several stadiums are temporary and will be dismantled after the World Cup. Lastly the tournament is still ongoing but this guy not only lied but managed to predict the future without any research on how Qatar will handle the tournament and to distract everyone he then rambles on about other countries because his bullshit needs to sound credible within any relevant research.

Good causes! The clown yapped for half an hour and did’t address his title, “the world cup already failed “. He spent like 20 minutes talking about previous controversies, who cares! then when he talked about Qatar his main point was OMG what are they going to do with all this infrastructure after the world cup. Also who cares. We want a great tournament, do you have anything to say why it will not be? There are 4 Arab countries competing, let Qatar host it. And as for human rights! That really cracks me up, who is here believe genuinely that the west cares as a whole about human rights? Only when it’s convenient yes. Here is the proof, China hosted the winter Olympics and the US, UK, Australia etc participated although they said they are committing Genocide against the Muslim Uyghurs. I didn’t hear this clown say anything. Or how about the occupation and apartheid system perpetrated against the Palestinians for the last 74 years! Heck two weeks ago Israeli media Haaretz confirmed Israel used biological warfare during the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and not s single liberal or conservative western media said a thing about it. Please consider all Palestinians as gays, maybe you will start having some sympathy to them or at least boycott their soccer team like you did with Russia, although unlike Russian occupation to Ukraine there is actual UN council resolutions about the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories including East Jerusalem and Syrian Golan heights ( ex 242). And I am not even trying to visit the colonization era. This world cup will be the best, actually I feel bad for the next country to host it, the bar will be too high.

As a South African, I have to say almost everyone was supportive of our world cup domestically and throughout many other countries. It was considered nation building and in retrospect quite cheap to host ($3bn or 3% of our annual budget). The feedback was all positive both internally and externally. Also a lot of people displaced were staying in informal or unsafe housing. I know about the bribes but it was Fifa's m/o to expect favours for hosting. We used our own labour for the infrastructure and created lots of jobs in the process. I'd say it's the last great thing our govt has done before draining the kitty. It's unfair we get paired with such controversial hosts. e.g Brazil public was against the WC and they were full of disasters. Our preparation went as smooth as possible (except for UK tabloids clutching at straws) and some say it was one of the best WC ever

@@waseemrajab1658 there isn’t any hate, at least from this community here on KZfaq. The vast majority of us are happy to see a World Cup in an Arab country, we just wish a better Arab country was picked, and that it was achieved without human rights violations. Stop trying to cry about racism when you know that’s not the case, you just blindly support everything that Qatar is doing whilst ignoring the obvious facts. There are many other countries in the region that would have been a better selection for a World Cup, both logistically and morally
