@@greatwuta I agree it's improved, but I like Dr. No because it's a very raw form of James Bond that I like. It's not too over the top, it's just James Bond doing his job. It just has this classic spy look to it that I like. No gadgets from what I recall, all he had was his ppk. Instead of using gadgets, Bond utilizes what he can for any situation he finds himself in. For example, bond uses a strand of his hair as a way to see if someone was snooping around his room. He also uses powder to see if anyone tampered with his suitcase. You get to see Bond use more of his smarts like when he goes to pour a drink, he thinks twice that it may be poisoned, so he opens a new bottle instead. Cool little stuff like that, I like that kind of stuff, you know? Another good example is when Bond knows someone is on their way to assassinate Bond, so Bond then decorates the room to make it look like he had a few drinks and is in bed, clueless. Only to find it's a trap for professor Dent that leads to my favorite scene in the movie; "you've had your six." You get to see Bond without the gadgets. Then you still get that classic "over the top" look towards the end of the film in Dr. No's secret lair. I really love that film!

After seeing this video, I watched the movie for the first time since it came out. It was far better than I remembered, and I think definitely Brosnan's best turn. It had all the classic Bond elements, good music, great skiing scenes, excellent script with good lines, a unique villain, and a formidable female character in Sophie Marceau. In hindsight, it felt like the last classic Bond film with all the right elements. Also, Brosnan himself was finally seasoned and confident in this one, and more worldly than he seemed in other films.

Btw i totally agree with the points in this video, both the good points and the criticisms, especially the lack of payoff with Renard and the excessive gun pointing by Bond (something I've noticed in all the Brosnan films). Great job gents. A balanced review. Which is rare, as I often find the vitriol expunged on TWINE perplexing. Sure, it has its flaws, the execution isn't always the best, but I would much rather watch a Bond film that experiments and arguably fails, than a formulaic Bond picture.

Great discussion as always. I have a fondness for this film. I'll admit it's because of what it wanted to be and not so much how it was executed. It wanted to be a FYEO and Daylights with plot twists and character development. Brosnan is great. All of the cast overacts at times. The bullet in the brain story goes nowhere and wasn't needed. Although the script let him down, Carlyle is a strong actor and is a decent henchman. Despite its flaws, I really enjoy this one.
@AllardRT
@AllardRT 3 жыл бұрын
I felt it tried to be more of a dark reprise to OHMSS, what's with the title, the skiing action scenes, the plot about Bond falling for an emotionally messed up rich girl. As for Renard, the bullet in the brain does give us a great moment of insight into his character - his intimate scene with Elektra shows that he's deeply disturbed by being unable to feel anything and living on a borrowed time and he is very conscious about Elektra wanting Bond to be his future replacement, but he can't do anything about it, having fallen for Elektra. That is what made him such a fascinating and even somewhat tragic character for me, even if he is a horrible person.

I went to both Premieres but nothing could beat the experience I had with Goldeneye. That's a special film. Agree about the opening sequence of TWINE it's almost too good. It's so good it builds up your expectation for the film that follows and the film that follows doesn't quite live up to the opening but it's still a great Bond movie and Pierce really did come of age as Bond. Nothing surpassed Goldeneye, I’d argue. Martin’s superb direction, it both honoured the past but felt genuinely contemporary, not least with that synth led awesome Serra soundtrack to help. It had a fresh innocence, but confidently knew what it was trying to do and I’d say that is was always his best by some way. However, TWINE is certainly his other truly great solid Bond film and a close run second to me, or even on a par, albeit with Pierce being more established and what that brought. It also has that OHMSS or Casino like element or retread to the dynamic with Sophie’s character. That said, with Pierce’s charisma and effortless charm means even the slightly weaker ones are still great and enjoyable.

Not even close to being on par to me. Goldeneye doesn't really have a weak link. The only thing people regularly bring up is the score, but like you I think it's great. TWINE has Denise Richards completely ruining one of the main parts, a villain who feels no pain which is never used, and the visual direction isn't close to the beautiful work Campbell did on Goldeneye. I'm also not a fan of Judi Dench in the field. Just always feels silly. And Goldeneye's pre-credit sequence is leagues better. That boat chase on the Thames should be thrilling, and it's just tension free. In fact, Brosnan's films in general after Goldeneye substituted tension for bombast. David Arnold's relentless scores didn't help with their constant blaring horns over 90s beats. On the plus side, Brosnan and Marceau are both great. But that's about it for me.

Goldeneye is my favorite Bond film with Majesties. World is in my top ten. But love Brosnan in Goldeneye. But this film is great. My favorite pre title with Living Daylights and Octopussy. Elektra King one of my favorite villians, Trevelyan still my obsolute favorite villian. M is very well done in this. My only blemish was Christmas Jones, and Rennard a let down, after the championing him up. There was little build up with Brad Whittaker, yet i love his confrontation with Bond. The whole obbsession with war strategy, and how he would have won wars, was so cool. And confronting Bond with strobes, various weaponry was great. Rennard on sub was anticlimatic. But love Brosnan as Bond. But, no GE is his best. Best Bond villian in Trevelyan, tied best henchman in Onatopp, tied with Oddjob. General Orumov is great. Boris is great as comedic villian. Coltranes Zikovsky is great ally. Only blemish is lack of score. Tank scene score is great.

I remember prior to Desmond Llewelyn's death that it was reported that John Cleese was hired to be Q's assistant, and in later films replace Llewelyn, when he wanted to retire from acting (he was 85 when he died). I'm not sure if TWINE was intended to be Llewelyn last, but it seemed like it was set up to maybe be, or suggest it. I think Llewelyn may have made DAD his last. Funnily enough, with the series rebooting after that, Llewelyn and Cleese wouldn't have come back. Even if Dench did.

Love TWINE, I think it is Brosnan's best. Love the PTS "I am giving you the opportunity to walk out with your life", villain Sophia Marceau and Renard the henchman are great, I love how they send off Q, really great soundtrack, always enjoy seeing Valentin in the Bond films, I also do not think Denise Richards is as bad as some people say. When Bond first meets Christmas, that scene in the underground site is very good. TWINE is a top ten for me.

The first Bond movie I ever saw was License to Kill (Licence?) because my dad would watch it when it was on TV. I saw GoldenEye when we rented it from Blockbuster Video and I liked it, but as a kid, I feel like the N64 game overshadowed it with my friends (again, as a kid). The World is Not Enough was my first Bond film that I saw in theaters. I loved it when I saw it even though it was a little more plot-heavy and soap-opera-ish than I was expecting and I admit I didn't fully understand the plot at the time. The theme song is my favorite of all the Bond movies. And 28 year old Denise Richards was the most beautiful woman ever to my teenage self.

Hard disagree on Zukovsky in this movie (23:42). He's one of the series best Bond contacts/allies. 1. He was excellent in GoldenEye too but in TWINE he's better incorporated into the story. 2. Unlike Xmas Jones, he provides just the right amount of levity (to a film with an undeniably dark and serious undercurrent). 3. His final scene is terrific. Had Bond never shot him in the knee (as we learn in GoldenEye), Zukovsky never would have been in position to save his life via the cane gun.

If this movie has soap opera moments then the Craig era is almost entirely soap opera. Even if Renard could not feel pain he could still get physically fatigued. Even though I loved Brosnan as Bond, his thin size made these fights less believable (one of the few things I like better about Craig....and yeah, I know, Bruce Lee was skinny, but he still has defined muscles and he was a clear master of a martial art). I agree the ending kinda pestered out. I liked Sophie Marceau and Robbie Coltrane. Denise Richards brought the movie down if being critical (when I watched it initially and years after it didn't distract me from the movie too much, but reading all the criticism maybe has me wincing when seeing her scenes now). I thought the Garbage theme was forgettable, but not awful. Overall I think it's a really good Bond movie. I still prefer it to rewatching the dour Craig films.

I just re-watched "The World is not Enough" again last night on blu-ray, and I actually really enjoyed the experience. I had more fun with this film than I ever did for some reason. Brosnan was a very good Bond. Robert Carlyle's Renald is the weak spot in this film. The character wasn't thought through by the writers or director. Renald really isn't even needed in this story and the movie may have been better without Renald completely. I actually think Brosnan is at his best Bond in Die Another Day, however, even though the rest of that movie pretty much stinks, Brosnan is great in Die Another Day. But Pierce Brosnan's best Bond movie is definitely "GoldenEye".

On the subject of Renard and his "superpower", around the same time that this movie came out there was a Dateline spot about a child that was born with a rare genetic defect that he couldn't feel pain. And I remember seeing this in the theater and had mentioned that to my Dad afterwards about the condition, and asked him, "In a James Bond world, if say, the Soviets had child with this rare genetic disorder, would they have trained them and harden them to some kind of super soldier?" He gave a long winded answer of how the Soviet system would use any resource to their advantage... Blah, Blah, Blah, Yadda, Yadda, Yadda, basically Yes they would. I asked him "Why didn't do that instead of some bullet wound to the head?" He said, "I don't have a clue"

There's a deleted scene where they go more into Electra's background story. The lack of payoff for Renard's pain thing is disappointing, and the final fight in the sub along with Denise Richards in general really bring this film down. I completely agree that there are certain elements that hold it back from being truly great. Unfortunately the script as well as shooting were super rushed for this and TND; so much wasted potential! Brosnan openly complained about how these films were handled in an interview for this movie, he seemed quite frustrated with Barbara and Michael! This was not supposed to be Desmond Llewelyn's last appearance as Q. This film's score is great, and I think it has the best pre-title sequence of the whole franchise!

for me the best Brosnan's Bond is 'Tomorrow never dies'. - good plot - MacGuffin bringing to mind the one from 'For your eyes only' - chopper chasing motorcycle - great (underrated) villain toying with the trope of 'world domination' (he even uses this phrase!) - great garage chase - diving scene it cleverly used known Bond tropes, referred to them and brought interesting stuff.

I have always had a soft spot for Goldeneye as it was the first new Bond film to come out when I was a kid and able to go see them. I geneuinely thought it nailed the tone and action. Plus it had Sean Bean and the fantastic tie-in game. Every subsequent Brosnan film felt worse at the time. However, it's so long since I've seen any of them that I certainly wouldn't be surprised to find it hasn't aged well at all (I started watching through all the Bonds failry recently but gave up at the first Moore film - wow, did i not like his style).

I always thought they could have made more of Robert Carlyle's imperviousness to pain. Having lost everything, we should have had a scene of him walking toward Bond, fully in the knowledge that he was done, and good for all but death. Bond could be seen to shoot him in attempt to stop him, but it would of course be ineffective. Renard just keeps walking. Bond lets off more bullets and all it does is slow him down. As Renard creeps to a slow, soon-to-be-dead stagger, he could have said "I can't feel any of this. But then, neither can you," as an obvious reference to Bond's cold, assassin-like mindset, having just put down Elektra. The point wouldn't be that Renard all of a sudden gained a conscience, but that deep down maybe Bond is even more impenetrable than he is. But, y'know, a fight on a submarine is cool too.

the script was filled with fresh/unique ideas it's just the writing clunky in some cases. also I think the director didn't knew how to shoot these kind of big franchise movies. before this, the director Michael Apted was mostly known for documentries or soap opera (which is no surprising, since as you said, this movie featured some soap opera elements). the action scenes are kinda lackluster because of his lack of experience in action movies. I mean don't get me wrong, most of the action isn't that bad. it's just some of the stunts feels pre-orchestrated, like something straight out of some stunt show in universal studios.. with that said this movie is definitely the best one from Brosnan, his era should've had been ended with this movie instead of that garbage Die Another Day. and as for the Bond girl Sofie Marceau, so I don't think she gets enough praise. first of all she is a fantastic actress (she saved the movie from being a abomination in the hands of Denise Richards) and her character was very interesting as well. the film tries to show it as Renard is manipulating Elektra. but it turns out she *was* manipulating him. she never had any stockholm syndrome, it was all staged, she did it so she could use his power to take down everyone in their way, and in the end she would take him down, so she can get a monopoly on oil in that region. she is definitely one of the greatest Bond girls ever in my opinion.

Certainly a curate’s egg of a movie. It has some great ideas but many tended to get sidelined. Whenever they put the better ideas in the forefront they were the best parts of the movie but whenever they forced in aging formula and cheesy jokes it felt at odds with what they were trying to accomplish with this movie. Although it could attributed to poor editing as well. It’s like they go between great moments and lesser ones to good to weak to great to bad. It was like they let the air out of the balloon every time they went from a great moment to a lesser one not long after. Definitely Brosnan’s best performance but Goldeneye is his best film.
