In the increasingly disconnected, busy and demanding world, Jennifer asks for everyone to discover the benefits that come from being selfish. In her talk, she talks about the value of taking time to connect with who you are and to find your joy each day. She tells her personal stories about the costs she experienced of giving too much and how she discovered the value of being selfish.
Jennifer is edgy, funny, and a little sweary. With over 20 years of tell-it-like-it-is leadership in public and private organizations, she climbed the corporate ladder to discover her passion for coaching and leadership development. She is a professional accountant by trade and inspires intentional joy by passion. Her biggest lesson has been that when we lose the connection to ourselves then we can no longer connect with others. In finding her connection to herself again, Jennifer is redefining what success looks like through her company, Intentional You. There, she challenges individuals to question their stories, their capabilities, and their judgements of themselves, to give them the platform to jump beyond what they thought was possible.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

When you experienced absolute joy watching the sunset, it's when you realized the miracle of nature, at that instant you become one with "existence ",you experienced "presence " you remove the toxic power of your thoughts, you live in the moment, ie. here and now,my joy is hiking, it's so magical, I learned that from Eckhart Tolle's book "The power of now ",everybody must read this book, it's on utube, audio book.God bless.

I think selfishness can be a little beclouding, because we’re all told that selfishness is a horrible thing, because it means we only care about ourselves instead of caring about others yet we’re also told to do a lot of great things for ourselves like taking care of ourselves, defending ourselves and standing up for ourselves as well as being a lot of “self” things like self-assertive, self-confident and self-reliant. I think young people need to be told that selfishness, like a lot of things in life, has its pros and cons. I think parents need to tell their teens what those pros and cons of selfishness are or let the teens figure the pros and cons out for themselves (which is better).

@@youdonotknowwhoiamlol Thanks! I also like to add that - in my opinion - it’s not so much people need to be more selfish, but people need to be more stubborn. Stubborn means that you don’t give in and a lot of times you can’t give in…you gotta draw your line in the sand, stand your ground and I think stubbornness gives you the power to do just that. You gotta give in to yourself a little more (which is how stubbornness and selfishness go hand-and-hand)

From past few weeks, I have been trying to become more selfish in a healthy way. I have a tendency since childhood of people pleasing, trying to fix others and I figured out it was due to unhealthy parenting style. I realised that in order to take care of others and help others properly I need to take care of my own self well. I have started prioritising my own needs, my own physical and mental health properly and it takes time to develop that pattern of thinking, feeling and behaviour but it's all worth it.
@youdonotknowwhoiamlol
@youdonotknowwhoiamlol Жыл бұрын
I need to work on that too. People need to get that being selfish (like you said in a healthy way) has it's benefits for people who want to become more confident and assertive. I also grew up with people pleasing, being overly self-conscious and caring too much about what other people think of me and never, ever standing up for myself. Hopefully you and I will reach a point in our lives where we can proudly and happily say "I made it."💪🏻

Selfishness is also a form of isolation. This loneliness comes about through our daily action. We are self-centred. What has meaning is to observe our own selfishness, your own self-centred activity, your constant, endless occupation with yourself, as a man or a woman you are occupied daily with yourself. And where there is self-centred activity, it must inevitably lead to isolation. You may talk of co-operation, working together, being together, but as long as this self-centred movement is going on in the form of nationalities, groups, sects and all the rest of it, that self-activity must inevitably lead to loneliness and isolation. So to merely observe the fact that one is selfish and not make a single movement not to be selfish, because any movement of the mind which has been living with deep unexamined selfishness, self-centredness, any act of the mind with regard to selfishness will not only strengthen selfishness, but will change the pattern of selfishness and you will think that pattern is unselfishness. So to observe without any movement of thought or action, that is, to observe your self-centred occupation in the name of god, in the name of all the rest of it, etc , to observe it without the past interfering, just to see your face, as it were, in the mirror, you can't change your face, probably you wish you could but there it is. It is what it is, and to observe it purely without any distortion, without any pressure, just to observe, that very observation exposes the whole consequences of selfishness and that observation cleanses the mind of selfishness. Do it. So if you could listen so entirely to the fact that all self-centred activity in any form must inevitably lead to isolation and therefore division and therefore strife. That's a fact. It is like gravity is a fact. You can't do anything about it. But if you observe it very closely, minutely, precisely, without any distortion, then that very perception is immediate action. So where there is isolation in our relationship, and we are isolated in our relationship, you may be married, you may sleep with another, you may hold his hand, you may say, my wife, my husband, my girl friend, whatever - we are isolated in our relationships, because each one has an image of the other put together by thought, through days and years and time. Those two images have relationship; images put there by memory, by association, by remembrance, and that is not relationship. That's why if you observe it, the image that you have about another, to see it actually, what is happening, that your relationship is based on memory, a remembrance of another, which has built an image in yourself of the other and the other has also an image about yourself, these two images are the factor of division. . And as long as there is that division there will be isolation, loneliness, pain, jealousy, anxiety, anger, hate, strife.. And loneliness is the consequence of our self-centred occupation. If you hear that and see the truth of it, instantly, immediately, then you will find that self-centred activity comes to an end. It is like ending something which you have been carrying for a thousand years. So there is an ending to sorrow. And there is the sorrow of mankind; man has borne, has made, has brought about sorrow. Killing each other, dividing into castes, nations, groups, sects, ashramas and so on. Dividing, dividing, dividing, fragmenting and as long as there is division between nations there must be war, as between people. We know all this, perhaps logically, intellectually, verbally, but we never apply, we never say, test it out. And so sorrow never ends.. So one asks, can there be an activity which is not centred round oneself, because as long as man is lonely through his daily activity, sorrow must inevitably continue...

On the positive side: "...greed, which is to demand ever more, is a praiseworthy quality provided that it is displayed under the right circumstances. Thus, should a person show greed in acquiring science and knowledge, or in the exercise of compassion, high-mindedness and justice, this would be most praiseworthy." ~ Baha'i Faith

I don't agree with her completely. Stress is a body reaction to danger. When we feel danger, our body reacts and we become stressed. So logically speaking, in order to remove stress we need to remove dangers from life. That is the ultimate solution to the stress problem. Employees are stressed as a reaction to the danger of being fired from job and stayed unemployed. Can we say that the solution to this is to ask employees to become selfish?? seriously ? No the utlimate solution to the employee stress problem is to put huge restriction to abusive firing and adopt company management strategies that push all employees to cooperate and not compete to achieve the best goals for the company.

We are more stressed despite facing less danger than our ancestors. I think what we perceive as danger isn’t entirely objective as some people have disorders like social anxiety.
