I feel the most bad for the dad. Like he's already grieving the loss of his daughter, he tries to do something nice for her friends, and then some random group comes to attack and kill his daughter's avatar in the middle of it all. That must have been absolutely awful!

It wasn’t her dad. He might have been there, but he wasn’t logged on her character. The guild contacted blizzard and they put her character there. It was basically an npc.

This is so true. Had the funeral gone by, it would have been a small factoid that only the people there and a few players knew or cared about. This way, it's got a great story behind it, and can be told to our grandchildren. Like a mobster hit at a funeral, it has mass appeal (to us nerdy kinds at least)

Serenity Now were pretty much screaming basement gremlins, and the shrieking from them after a huge chunk of the server not only decided to go after them for this, but even their own faction actively avoiding assisting them, was so good to see. Red is Dead on a PvP server, but this is the kind of thing where you take a step back and walk away. Somebody died. This was somebody going out and letting people who knew their child say their final goodbyes in the medium where they first met, something they did not have to do. I played on PvP servers from Vanilla to about the middle of Wrath and, for the most part, PvPers showed a lot of respect and restraint. Don't square up to a lowbie unless they step up to you. Don't gank a Hunter while they're taming a rare. Don't kill Quest-Givers unless its a life or death situation, that kind of thing. You're there to fight other players and prove your skill, not be a dribbling shitstain bullying the weak. Serenity Now was the pinnacle of the worst aspects of WoW's PvPer community, and I still get annoyed when people say they were 'justified' because it was a PvP zone. If you walk into a smoking area and I walk up and purposefully blow a lungful of cigar smoke into your face, you deserved it because you walked into a smoking area?

You know, ironically, it's probably lucky the crashers did this when they did. Not because Blizzard would take harsher action today then they were willing to back then, but because if happened today the name and address of the crashers would be uploaded to the Internet inside of an hour. I'm not saying that the crashers would deserve to have their lives destroyed by the combined might of the Internet, but the world has changed since 2006.

Their lives? no. As much of a bunch of jackasses these people were ... just being a dick to people isn't justification for ruining lives or death threats. But I certainly wouldn't be adverse to the idea of hackers nuking their accounts and just erasing the guild from existence. or an organized griefing of them that lasts so long they all quit because all their doing is watching their dead body all the time.
@ObadiahtheSlim

It's a PVP server. What they did to crash the funeral was 100% justified and in spirit of what a PVP server is. Also since it's a PVP server, guilds are 100% justified in enforcing civility. That too is in the spirit of what a PVP server is. You do a dick move like that, then bounties to ruin your game are also justified. Taking anything outside of the game is not justified.
@jamisonosborne
@jamisonosborne 9 ай бұрын
@@ObadiahtheSlim So if the trolls had crashed a funeral IRL would that have also been part of the game? If it is ok to crash a funeral in a game, then is it ok to crash a funeral IRL? Why not? What's the difference between the real world and the virtual world? The problem with the "it's just a game, it's not real" way of thinking is that it justifies any virtual activity simply because it is virtual. Undertale made that point perfectly, when Sans berates you for doing something not out of any sense of moral compass, but just because you can. "And because you can, you have to." SAO, for all its faults, also made that point. Just because something is virtual doesn't mean it isn't real. The pain that the parents and friends of the dead player felt was real pain because of the real actions the trolls took in the virtual world. To say nothing of what they did in the real world afterwards. The book "The Cyber Effect" does a great job of pointing out why online actions are real world actions and why "it's just a game" is a very dangerous sentiment. Long story short, if you wouldn't do it IRL then you shouldn't do it online, and if you are able to do something to someone online you are equally able to do it IRL. Since the only real difference between the real world and the virtual world is accountability.

@@jamisonosborne It's a PVP server. Being a dick and suffering the in-game social consequences for being a dick are part of the PVP experience. If you find that unacceptable, don't play on a PVP server. All of that is enumerated within the PVP server's terms of service. Now I wouldn't crash an in-game funeral because I'm not a dick. I would also gladly go kill and camp some dick who my group of friends had declared to have broken the code of civility that we abide by.

One fun addition for the video: At the start of the fight, you can see allot of AoE (area of effect) spells used by mages. One mechanic in wow is that, once engaged in combat you cannot change your gear, so people using cloths were unable to put their gear on and fight back. I can't talk about the etical stuff but the planing? that was something else entirely

One of my favorite stories about World of Warcraft is that when they introduced WoW:Classic (game servers where you would play on the vanilla version of the game) it was sold and heralded by many as a return to form and the olden days when the game was good and made to be played carefree with your friends. And yet, somehow, the players themselves turned Classic into just as miserable a grind as the retail version, to the point where Blizzard had to add a new item to the 15 years old version of its game to alleviate some of the worst issues. Because the past is dead and can never be resurrected. The game was the same as back then, but the players... the players had changed.

I stopped playing before they actually added Classic, but before that whenever someone asked for early mode servers, I argued that early WoW wasn't actually hard, only that nobody really knew what they were doing and nostalgia was kicking in. The way Classic servers turned out, I'm pretty sure I wasn't wrong. (The way current WoW looks from other players, I'm not sure I could enjoy a raid ever again).

Yeah, as someone who has no will to go back into MMos and who was a runescape player way back when this does kinda show me blizzard at least respect the rules of the game, you build the mechanics and then leave the world to use them as they come, trying to enforce something as subjective as morality as a law is retarded in real life where there are actual stakes, in videogames it's a sign you have nothing but soup in between them ears... the fact this made history in the game she loved is kind of the best sendoff she could have wished for.

Man I'm loving this series with every new episode. I am curious as to if you think the Salome incident in Elite dangerous might be worth a video, since I heard about it when it happened despite not playing the game.

Correction: Cold Blood, in Vanilla, was a cooldown which guaranteed a critical strike on the next damaging ability. Many rogues, especially in this situation, would combine it with Ambush for a strong burst opener. Depending on gear, it could one-shot a cloth-wearing class.

I recall first learning of this by fibding the SN video. "Yes, we know we're a-holes." Was posted at the end. Also where i heard "I'm the Scatman" for the first time.

It's kinda sweet how this resulted in such a hardcore bounty that it actually resulted in some of the offenders quitting

So much to love about this. The RPG plushies on the floor. The growing hat. The B-reel footage. Commendations to all concerned.

This event, Tainted Blood, and others like it are the reason I started playing WoW around 2007/8 during TBC. I was quite the menace and earned many rivalries...

I was a Tauren Warrior (Sader) in the guild with Fayejin. An Orc Warlock (Yanoa) was her boyfriend that posted on the forums about having an in-game funeral for her. Our guild name was Malediction. So glad to be a part of WoW history!

Fayejin has been immortalized by the funeral crashing event thanks to Serenity NOW. She loved Fishing, Snow... And PvP.

Oh, THIS story. I read about this in a Cracked article about legendary dick moves in video games. Props to Frost for giving it a Spaghetti Western spin on it. And now I now where "Serenity Now" comes from; I always thought it was a "Firefly" reference. Was that Seth Green, and that other guy from Robot Chicken? Why were they being interviewed?

I played WoW pretty much from the start of the game. I never played PvP servers but everyone heard about this story. Being reminded of it now almost, aaaaalmost, makes me want to pick up the game again. But i've been clean since cataclysm and i'm not dipping back into that now.
