I raise Southdowns, the smaller variety are called Babydolls in the states. They were the first sheep I ever owned. We moved to the larger American Southdowns for different reasons but the personality is the same and so delightful to work with

We raised Southdowns in Texas Hill Country - performed well - nice wool crops, pasture rotating with Angora goats and Herefords. Land sustained nicely.

These babies are incredible. I cannot wait to see this group mature.

I come from place very close to the south downs where these sheep are farmed .There is a big country park on a place called Butser hill at queen Elizabeth country park .It is an educational centre and a place of scientific interest . The sheep are wonderful gentle ,slow, not afraid great for visiting school groups .I come from a county called Hampshire where these sheep are popular .

i have 90 percent shropshire and 10 percent katahdin sheep mix, they dont eat tree bark either but will eat leaves. they have good temperament , even my ram is very sweet and gentle. im also cart training them and also pack training them. they are very strong for their size and actually make decent draft animals too

Over the border in Hungary, I think that Racka Sheep are the best breed. For the same context here (1:14). For one thing, they have been here a very long time, and do not need to be imported, and being rather common that gives them a ready market, so helps out economically when smaller businesses need to find markets. Rare sheep breeds (or highland cattle) in an area where they are uncommon and not traditional may result in problems marketing, processing, selling and earning income.

I love spinning southdown wool. It's so springy! If you want to sell fleeces, please don't dump their feed over their heads. It gets all in the fleece and makes carding rather unpleasant.

Love the fact you"ve decided to keep farming after your move from Sweden...good for you. Perhaps a note to help you improve your soil is to look at "Dr, Johnson-Su Bioreactor. Making a brewed tea with the finished product really helps the soil microorganisims grow and is great for your crops..keep up great work...

If you want meat-sheep these breeds are very robust and perform very well: St. Croix, Katahdin, Ile de France, Easy care, Tarasconaise.

to add to your discussion about sheep eating bark and the height - its all down to upbringing - and starvation/set-stocked grassland allocation - rather than a rotation and diverse food options. and height - you can teach sheep to reach the higher branches to aid in pruning.

On our farm in Australia we used to use Southdown rams over maiden ewes to make their first lambing easier but we were penalised at the market for these smaller framed lambs so now we just use Poll Dorset ram lambs over the ewes instead, but they are a good breed of sheep, just didn't meet our market needs.

Very interesting, never heard of this breed! Do you have any opinions about the Dorper Sheep? They are also known for being hardy and I personally like the fact that you often don't have to sheer them. They aren't as calm, small or carefull with tree bark though, but since we don't have fruit trees I am okay with that.

It good you do not cut your sheep's tail's, get all the wool you can. The best garden I've planted we put fish 4 inches under in each row then used a hand seeder to cover with chicken dung. Not too much it will burn crop's. Good luck and good days ahead.

I raise gluten-free sheep on a diet of no-till hydroponic lotus blossoms harvested by solar powered drones. They knit each others wool into Colorful ski hats and unicorn socks as it grows. Their pre-composted poo smells of strawberries, their flatus of jasmine and my feet and ears are never cold. Maybe you should ask local farmers for help instead of the internet. Then you could have sheep like mine.

I don't really get the point of buying 5 rams and no ewes, especially when these rams are already mature. Growing out some young wethers for their meat and for experience in keeping them might make sense, but buying rams just to have them on the farm doesn't seem beneficial, since all they can do is eat your forage and require care and attention that could otherwise be directed elsewhere. This many rams will be able to sire about 200 ewes, so unless you already have a contract with someone to provide you with a huge flock of ewes next year, what's the point? The market for South Down ewes in your area may be just as tight in 2021.

Southdown are far from the best sheep in the world. They can be good for cerain situations but in other conditions they will simply not work. They were bred in the Southern England with its mild climate (no severe winter), on chalky grass hills (called downs). If you take the same breed to the Highlands of Scotland or Wales they will have not enough nutrients in its poor pastures and harsh weather. In central England they will get way too fat. They are mostly kept as "terminal sires" in the UK - i.e. males are crossbred with highland breeds ewes to produces faster growing meat lambs. All down breeds grow fast but are born with large heads - i.e. often get birthing complications, and get very fat if you grass is too rich - but cant survive in very poor pastures - they would have too be fed expensive concentrates in winter - not what you want in permaculture system. Every breed of sheep is good - but often only in specific environment. e.g. Dorper do very well in drylands of Africa, but in UK they get problems with feet etc. You cant keep merinos in the UK for similiar reasons, but in Germany or New Zealand they are fantastic (drier climate, although colder).
