This Populele was the ukulele recently featured on the Today Show! I think as more people learn about it, more will want to talk about the instrument's features.
A follow-up review will be posted in early April ;)

Bernadette Teaches Music , Hi Bernadette, couple of questions, does the app and instrument have updates , so it can add more songs also would be easier if the Populele had numbers 1-4 to tell you what finger to press as opposed to the dots ?

Hello Bernadette, when I read the title of your Video I thought it is a joke. I could not believe that it is a real Uke and it is more a kind of a Gimmick. But after I look your Video I am surprised that it is a real and not so bad sounding uke with this interessting learning features. Did you use it in you classroom and what is your experience with it. What is the Price for this uke? Like your cat :-) and the way you are presenting your Video!! Thanks for sharing this with us!!

Hi Bernadette! My 6 year old son Juancarlos and I, discovered your videos last month. I purchased a ukelele in the summer in the hope of learning to play ukelele through KZfaq tutorials. I learned a few basic chords and things, but your channel was the one that taught me basic musical fundamentals and playing for enjoyment at the pace that I set. Which is why when I found your 30 day challenge and saw that you even differentiate or scaffold for those that feel ready and comfortable, I knew with confidence that I could learn to play an instrument. Even as an adult and never having played an instrument before. I would share the ukelele with my Kindergarten aged son. Him watching me learn has inspired him to want to experience learning an instrument too. However he is a lefty and I am A righty so I know he would benefit from a ukelele with the strings placed in the opposite way. Watching your videos together has helped him to be more comfortable with music, to sing more and be more playful with music and for just creating sounds.

That's insane! It's so high-tech and I can really see how it helps beginner students who struggle with chords! I can't wait to hear about your and your students' experience with it. It does makes me a bit sad to think about beginners out there getting this and abandoning all human teacher contact tho, even if just with KZfaq teachers. I think with instruments like the ukulele there's so much to explore and the app can only provide a very rigid programme and there's noone the student can turn to for questions. I feel like the instrument is too lively to be taught like that, if you know what I mean. But I absolutely see the benefits especially of adding it to classes like yours to help out students who fall a bit behind, but I can really only see it as an addition to a bigger learning experience. With app-based teaching tools like that I always feel like they teach a no-mistakes mentality and leave people striving for perfection rather than fun and experience. So I just hope people who use this truly fantastic tool (can't deny what it is) don't forget about the heart and soul of playing and learning. Tho I don't know how far the programme goes, does it only teach the basic chords? Or does it teach up to an advanced playing level? (Sorry for the long comment! This is just a really fascinating thing!)

I want to come back to this and give a more thorough response because you bring up GREAT discussion points. I tested this ukulele on my students today (after posting the video) and saw where it is helpful and where it can't replace human contact, as you brought up.

I'm a 41 year old disabled veteran with anxiety and PTSD. I bought one of these last week and its great. I see it as a tool for disabled people who don't like going in public and want to learn in the privacy of where ever they are at. Myself, I don't like dealing with people much so I can learn something without the hassle. With kids I think it's an extra learning tool for when they aren't at lessons or school.
@11jokerchen11
@11jokerchen11 6 жыл бұрын
Jason Ragon Thank you for sharing your story, I didn't consider that at all, which was very short-sighted of me. I only thought of kids etc that, like you said, could use it additionally. I do think that even if this is someone's main tool of learning it's always good to break away from such a strict, impersonal programme even if just with KZfaq tutorials tho. But I can see different reasons now for not wanting to interact with people as part of the learning process.

Six months since i bought my Uke and they finally release a "smart uke." But it does lead me to a question that's been on my mind. I'm still practicing to master holding the neck and placing my hand and finger tips to play the C, Am, F, G7 and G chords...trying to build up muscle memory and the ability to change from one chord to the next. While practicing moving from chord to chord, I'm working on some strumming...combining the two kind of makes music and that's pleasing to the ear. I've been getting some pressure to play some relevant, modern songs to play the chords for and sing along to. But that's kinda where the chords and strumming begin to fall apart. Add singing and normally I lose the strumming pattern. They rhythm is still there, until I have a chord change that's not smooth. (G is proving to be my current nemesis) it just seems to fall apart when i try to sing along. Long story short, what is the proper procession for learning the Uke? Chords first? Strumming? I haven't even given consideration to picking yet. I'm starting to feel like I'm hitting a wall working alone with only the internet for guidance. Thanks for all your lessons and reviews.

I have been learning uke for a little less than a year now and I am actually able to play some blues progressions already, before this I never played any I instrument. What has worked for me is to make both really easy and SLOW. I.e. I start with the same progression you mention (C Am F (or Dm) G7) but doing just 4 down strums every chord, (count to 4 between a strum and the next) then pick up the speed, once you strum fluently start over but doing down then up. It is hard to make the strum of an actual song when you are not familiar with the chord progressions, and to sing and play is an entirely different skill that means that you can separate the melody (the song lyrics) and the harmony (the uke strumming). it takes some practice to go there (there are some songs that are still a challenge for me) Other important thing is to play something you do love, I started with blues almost immediately even if I couldn't understand very much what I was doing, just later start learning songs so I can share with others 😄, is less than a month since I start trying to play and sing, and I love it. (Even if I make to start raining when I sing lol) Once you can do several progressions (G Em Am D7 is another good one) you would notice that a lot of songs are simply that ( i.e. la Bamba, Guantanamera and lava you use the same chords and just slightly different strums) then is gonna be easier to learn a lot of songs I have learned just with youtube tutorials and right now I'm going through the Beatles challenge from Bernadette and some are resulting challenging for me which is great because help me improve my playing and gives me a lot of new ideas. I hope this was useful and no too boring. Love from Colombia

Hi Bernadette. That's Kike, from Spain. Thank you so much for that cute and sincere review (not sponsored one). It was a so nice surprise to find you. I used to play piano and clarinet over 20 years ago but, because university first and them because of long working days, those instruments got (sadly) out of my day a day. I was wondering to "go back to music" and thanks of your review i´ve decide to do it with an ukelele bellow my arms (and then... someday, catch again the clarinet as well... but in future). At the moment, I still don´t have much free time so the Populele idea sounds great. I´ve just ordered one and I can´t hardly wait for it; I´m so exited. I´m, a music enthusiastic, in all the ways and i´m guessing that the ukelele i´s going to be pressent from now to ever in my live. I must confess that not knowing much about ukelele, as an idea, I found it great to start trying skills, improve habilities and then use it as a first steep to then "change it" to a guitar. However i´ve completely change that idea. The ukelele it´s great!!! it´s not "the first steep for nothing". It´s fresh, with warm sound (what a paradox, fresh and warm at the same time!!!), it easly carried on, brings full por possibilities and transmit such good feelings. Morever, all that in so little size! Thank you for your enthusiasm, sharing your time and knowledge (and for letting your cats appear on the videos :))

Hi Bernadette! This was such a great review, I purchased this for my son for Christmas! I thought this was a wonderful way for him to get started, especially since there was an app he could use on his phone. I ordered one and received it over the weekend. I wanted to test it out in case there was any thing wrong with the Populele before I gave it to him. I am SO glad I did, the bluetooth and part that lights up the fretboard STOPPED WORKING after I left it to charge and after I had connected it to the app! Apparently, this has happened to quite a few people as evidenced by the small forum they have on the Populele site. I am not sure if this happened to any of your viewers or even to you, but just wanted to let you know this might be a growing issue with the Populeles. Thank you for all you do to teach us the ukulele - I am so excited to keep learning with you myself, and I hope my son can join me soon (if his Populele gets fixed). Keep up the great work!

I'm thinking of buying the last one in a shop being sold for discount because they said the charging cable isn't working. It could just be a bad cable but if it's inside the uke it will be hard to fix. If it's still under warranty can't the Xiaomi service center fix it?
@QuerkieGal
@QuerkieGal 5 жыл бұрын
@@@jjryan1352 - it depends on where you buy it. Populele informed me that it will not fix any Populele that is sold by vendors like Ebay etc (check out their list here: popuband.com/pages/unauthorized-populele-sellers) which is where I bought mine. They said there are a lot of "fake" Populele's out there and they don't help with those purchased from those sites. The box looked pretty legit to me. Funny thing though, I was about to film a video for the vendor I bought it from to prove it wasn't working AND, my Populele started working again! I tried everything last night to fix it (ie change cords, chargers, jiggled the cable I saw inside the hole, nothing worked. I pressed the power button several times even. Now, tonight it started working - weird. I would purchase it from Populele if you're concerned about issues that happen down the line. I would probably not buy the one with the faulty cable, unless you now a thing or two about electronics and how to fix them.

The sound is ... different. Seems less soft. Anyhow, how are the lessons from the app? I was thinking about subscribing to yousician, but this seems like a better deal.

Thanks for the review! I think I see a Christmas present here. :-) The only thing I would add (unless I missed it) is how much it costs.
