My idea: Get rid of the stone off. Instead top 2 are in the finals and 3rd group place is awarded with an automatic invite to next years WSM. So there is an incentive to fight. That also means that top 3 of each group are the 15 guaranteed participants of next year, leaving 15 other open qualification spots for tournaments like OSG and Giants live. And also: Create a list 2 months before competition with all the possible reserves and of course inform them about that ;) If someone drops out, the top of this list is the automatic replacement. The next athletes on that list are invited to the comp as back up reserves or equipment tester or just to be there and get some experience with the comp.

2 weeks notice for WSM is a total joke, being mostly in America these days it takes a week to get used to the time difference. Stone off needs to be replaced with anything tbh, it’s not right to put that on an athlete who is already behind. Top 2 auto qualifying with the 3rd automatic qualifying for next year or have the groups bigger and top 3 go through. I want to see it as it happens not on a spreadsheet and I would be happy to pay good money for a year’s subscription

I hated the Thor v Eddie thing. Love strongman, love boxing, I never watched their fight or pressers and unfollowed both of them. I even generally skip watching 2017-2018 when I'm binging WSM just because of the lack of sportsmanship. I sincerely hope I never see anything like that again. The only thing I can even think of that was like that was 1996 when Nathan Jones stomped off and wouldn't shake Magnus Ver Magnusson's hand when he qualified for the final. I love that strongmen are cool people and get along well and cheer each other on, even when it means their opponent wins out. It's one of the things that I've always loved about the sport.
@antoniocenteno1483
@antoniocenteno1483 14 күн бұрын
@@PhillipCalvin627But we learned a lot from that rivalry, specially the kind of people they've become, also a lot of corruption in the sport, whos side Giants Live is and so many other things. Personally it changed the way I saw strongman for the dirt it has on, Wich is good, turning the blind eye is just harmful and not right for the sport and atlethes, Wich would never happend if Thor and Eddie stayed nice. Strongman is like life, not all of it is nice, but aknowledging it helps you to become better... Sadly a lot of people quickly forgot all that because "it hurt the sport". Also, the actual Thor vs Eddie Rivalry in strongman saw no unsportman moments between them for all the years it lasted. Thor threw tantrums in 2017, but, aimed at Colyn, not Eddie. The real moments of tension between them never happend until 2020
@PhillipCalvin627
@PhillipCalvin627 13 күн бұрын
@@antoniocenteno1483 in WSM there wasn't any shade directed at Eddie, you're absolutely right but when Thor challenged Brian's reps in 2018 that really rubbed me the wrong way. I can't think of any year from 1977 onward where an athlete actually tried to squeeze out more points by directly challenging another athletes performance specifically out in the open like that. There have been moments where they challenge a judges call, in particular on overhead pressing events interestingly enough, like natural stones and the Viking press, especially in the Douglas Edmunds days. (Jamie Reeves, Flemming Rasmussen and Gerrit Badenhorst come to mind) But what corruption specifically are we talking about? Thor knew he double dipped before they even held the event in 2017 and Colin even specifically talked to him about it before he ever even went out. He did the same thing in 2014 and laughed it off when I was rooting for him to win, no less. Colin called out Elbrus Nigmatullin for the same thing in 2005 except he didn't warn him or award him any of those reps, so he's been consistent with that rule and even gave Thor slack when he hadn't for others in the past. But 2017 Thor had a problem with it and he felt like he was being treated unfairly. If anything it should have been worse IMO. As for the events being stacked in Eddie's favor, 4 out the the 6 events were the same as 2016 when Brian won his 4th title. The events in Thors winning year in 2018 could be argued even favored him specifically. Loading race, deadlift for reps, bus pull and overhead press were all events Thor slays. Mind you, I prefer those kinds of events. It just kinda sucked because I really wanted Thor to win WSM finally. No one deserved it more, ever, but when he finally did it, I didn't even really enjoy it. I guess I should say I didn't really have a problem with Eddie until 2020ish. I was never a fan of his beyond his crazy drive to push through on static events but the whole beef definitely soured me towards him for a while. I actually like the more athletic events and years, so he was never my cup of tea. These days I do think he's a pretty funny guy on social media. At this point, in fact I don't necessarily have a problem with either of them as it's been a while and they are both incredible athletes but at the time I didn't want anything to do with either of them. Not trying to argue by the way, you are absolutely 100% justified in having your own opinion but just wanted to explain what I felt about all that mess.

The bottom line with the stone off is that it's a spectacle for TV and some fans love it but not fair or balanced for the athletes specifically. Which is also sort of representative of WSM as a whole. They have not adjusted to the fact that Strongman is a legitimate sport and still treat it as a circus sideshow. If they really cared about making the competition the best it could be they'd get rid of the stone off and rotate the last event in the finals so the entire show isn't eternally biased slightly toward good stone lifters.

Totally agree about the stone off, I don't like it either. You can be much better than the guy in third but they can beat you on the stone off and go into the final? That's just wrong. Furthermore, I think the stone off makes the final worse because then you have 5 athletes more fatigued and not at their best. How different might this final have been but for the stone off? We'll never know! I'd much prefer the old system back whereby the top two progress to the final! 👍👍

The stone off seems like a good incentive to not come in 2nd in the heats. If 2nd place automatically made it to the final, then the heats would be about trying to place 2nd and save energy for the final. The stone off adds incentive to come in 1st and adds incentive for the guys in 4th or 5th to struggle into 3rd place.

First thing first. Remove Colin Bryce from WSM and you remove the dark clouds hanging over the event, and everyone knows by now why this has to happen. Second: The stone-off is the most stupid thing ever. If the qualifying events aren't in your favour (and we know Bryce' exploitation in this regard) you'll have to do an extra strength endurance event... this just screams out loud that we don't like fair play and/or we know nothing about human physiology. Coming up with another qualifying system is easy, but it makes you wonder why it doesn't happen 🤔

And rightfully. Is no a thing against WSM though but Giants Live organizers that for years threw shade at him and finally tried to stomp over his reputation with the build to his fight with Eddie the crab Hall. Thor had already cuted ties with them before retiring in 2020, after all they did after that there is just no way Thor comes back. And nevermind WSM is by far the weakest of the big shows nowadays, Thor knows there is not much prestige on it anymore, only sponsors and he already have them... So, yeah, he is better without them.

The hard part with the top 10 finalists getting an auto invite is it’s a whole year out vs seeing how they do through the year. Also the last champions like licis,novikov and Thor(not likely but possible) can just participate since they’ve won. Then one person said the 3rd place in every group should get an invite. That’s 17/18 places off the bat and the rest of the year people fighting over 12-13 spots 😅

2:00 Here's a random idea: giving a lot of the guys at OSG an immediate spot at WSM might be a bit much but the comp could be used for reserves. So the highest placing athlete from OSG (if they didn't qualify) would be reserve no. 1, next no. 2 and so on down the list. In general, they could come up with some rules concerning where they get the additional athletes from after filling the spots for direct qualification. Maybe look at the top 5s of Giants Lives, going down the list for each. At least something. And if they want to, they can still keep 5 or so spots for wildcards, if they feel someone truly exceptional deserves the chance despite not qualifying otherwise. Would have the added bonus for WSM themselves that if you have a clear system that people know the workings of, there should be much less complaining from all of us on that front ^^ 5:40 Maybe that's just my perception but in the past it at least felt like yeah, the podium might be diverse but the final spots aren't necessarily so. This year had finalists from 7 different countries. Since after 2010 (also 7), it's been fewer than that for every year except 2018 (8). 7:45 Ask and you shall receive :D As far back as Strongman Archives goes (I'm way too lazy too look up earlier comps), Big Z has never not won a log lift at WSM. If you look at athletes' careers in general, there are certainly others who have almost never lost a certain event (or at least not in their prime) but they are few and far between.

Hot take... unpopular opinion........ WSM is just the worlds strongest athlete. For years its has become more about moving and speed and timed events. Strength shouldn't be timed. You can either outlift everyone or you cannot. You are either stronger or you are not. Who can throw the heaviest thing the farthest or highest? Who can deadlift more? Who can squat more? Who can pick up the most heavy things and put them on top of this or that. Speed and time should not play a part. This is my opinion. I am aware that it wins me no allies and will likely end in every other armchair strongman telling me why I am wrong. Strength is strength. Speed is not.

You're describing power lifting. The roots of strongman are functional strength (Husafell stone carry) and circus (spectacle). But set aside history. What feats of strength will get the largest television audience in the year 2024?

@@aarons3014 what television? WSM isnt even on TV or id watch it. everyone else streams. Strength is strength. you're either stronger than the other guys or you're not. and no im not talking about powerlifting. that sport is boring AF

@@djrmonix weight classes exist for a reason. no, timed events are just boring imo. sure if youre strong and fast you win but what if a guy is way stronger but not as fast? he is punished for being less athletic. but hes stronger, so you found the fastest strong guy... not the strongest guy.

They physics involved in several events favors the taller athlete, atlas stones is one of them. The same is true of the stone-offs. I would also say that a taller athlete has a longer distance to accelerate the bag/keg toss and a higher release point; therefore, an advantage.

Also, in terms of rivalries, this occurs due to a lack of competition that is on par with the two or three athletes that are supposed rivals. Bill Kazmaier and Geoff Capes, and Magnus ver Magnusson and Jouko Ahola seemed to me more about actual rivalries (i.e. based on grudges). Whereas, Mariusz and Zydrunas, and Brian / Zydrunas / Thor seemed more about athletes far ahead of the pack. I feel the same is true of Tom and Mitch. They drive each other to become better athletes, but there is simply no animosity in it to consider it a real 'rivalry''.

Tom just looks absolutely fecking huge this year. He embodies what I think of when I think Stromgman. Tom appears to do well in the format of Worlds and I would love to see him win Brian’s show and win a couple of Arnolds so he has a balance in his career as I honestly think he’s going to be the GOAT. 3 WSM at 28 is crazy and I hope he stays injury free and learnt from the time he took off as he needs to be consistent in his growth and it’s a pleasure to see him do well. I started watching when Capes was competing and I loved watching Terry and yourself and obviously Eddie. For such a small country we have had some great competitors throughout time. The only thing I didn’t like this year was that we didn’t have Brian in the show and I know that he is going to continue to grow the sport for the better and I am a huge fan of his as well as our athletes. I wonder how far Bish would have gotten if he was injury free, he looked strong and fit to me and I think he would have placed quite high if he was 100%. It also has to be said that Eddie did a great job reporting on the show, I would of loved to see Brian with him doing this but I understand that Brian needs to concentrate on his comp and the businesses that he has. Strongman is in a great place right now

I think the stone off to make it to the final. However, if they were to have all 10 do it against one another to determine who the top five to go to the finals would be......that would be interesting. (I still hate the idea that half of the final competition had to do an entire event more than the half.

Great video, thanks, with some great points. I 100% agreed that all should qualify, my main point is that many time Mateusz is invited sometimes after not competing for a long time and being very poor like last year. Stone off wise is that the first time it’s happens as I think Tom maybe have been top 2 after a stone off? Massive props to the top 10 guys, it’s alway great to see the camaraderie behind the scenes on all their content, no excuses from Mitch and no quarter given from Tom.. I cannot wait for next year

A challenge to promoters who invite new people instead of "has-beens" is the attitude of some fans that World's Strongest Man is boring because there's no one exciting to root for. I see this as a marketing issue that both promoters and athletes need to improve on. Example: there should be Tristan Hoath trading cards -- a snappy meme-like image that provides reasons to root for him. In fact, I think there's an opportunity for a designer who wants to become the professional strongman trading-card-maker, the way some people specialize in making KZfaq thumbnails. The days of posting a reel to IG and then getting back in the gym are almost over.

Mathematically that’s probably correct. If he doesn’t tear his hands open, he probably gets second in the Giant’s Medley (Evan was blazing fast), and that bumps Tom’s points down. The next three events are probably unaffected, but on deadlift, Mitch would likely win or tie for first, and get second on stones. That puts Mitch at about 55 or so and Tom about 51. The catch is that injury is part of the game. Everyone else did the same event and faced the same risks. Mitch said himself he probably needs to do some more yard work to thicken up those callouses. While it was unexpected, it’s something that was unplanned for, while others one way or another (intentionally or not) were prepared for it. So my point is, while Mitch is an exceptional athlete and COULD have won had the hand injury not happened, Tom’s experience and prep were the difference makers in a battle between two gifted strongmen, and he earned #3 unquestionably.
