After watching you I got into sharpening myself. I could never achieve a sharp edge until watching your videos. I now sharpen for all my friends. I have a cheap hardware store low grit (didn't say which grit it was!) for rough grinding, two Naniwa stones (1000 and 5000) and a slate stone. I hope to get some more before long. Thank you so much for your teaching. You are a good teacher, even though you may not be teaching professionally. I look forward to your future sharpening videos!

I'd like to get a 12k Shapton eventually. The 10k Chosera/professional is a Stone that needs to be experienced by anyone who loves sharpening. Its so smooth and buttery with great feedback. It leaves a great finish if you took your time and went through your stone progression. Not for every steel but for vg10 and 154cm class and under its a pleasure to use. I'd like to try the 5k Chosera too but the Shapton 5k fills that need. One if their best stones alongside 1k and 2k imo. Not a fan of the 8k and I just go from 5k to 10k.

Hey kyle. Local canadian knife maker, sharper and restorer and just picked up a 320, 1000 and 5000 shapton and was wondering if you had any issues with you water stones getting moldy, musty or generally stinky afyer awhile.. ive taken to soaking them in vinegar diluted water every so often,(not the splash and go stones, just the soaking ones) but still am having issues. I always let them dry before storing.

Shapton Pro 12k is my least favourite stone to use but edge of it is awesome.. Screaming sharp , no stropping needed.. But 10k chosera/pro/arata is the most beautyfull stone to finish on.. Elastic, soft feeling , no loading at all... But price difference is brutal.. 250-300$ vs 70-80$

Sharpening stones are a waste of money. I've been into knives for well over 25 years and the best way I found to get a knife hair shaving sharp is by using a 400 grit diamond sharpener and finish it off with a ceramic honing rod (5-7 min tops!). I just saved you 30 min of torture and money at could have been wasted on a fancy rock which costs an arm and a leg! And just because a knife loses it's edge doesn't mean it needs sharpening, it just needs a few passes on a honing rod, this gives your knife a longer life.
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 4 жыл бұрын
I use diamond then polish on some ceramic and finish up with a charged strop. Good enough for my chisels and plane irons. If I can't get back to work in a couple of minutes it is not worth my time.
@dp1381
@dp1381 3 ай бұрын
5-7 minutes isn’t particularly fast, and shaving hair is not particularly difficult. If you’re woodworking it makes a huge difference to have a polished edge vs one that is merely sharp from something like 1-2k grit. A simple 3-4 stone progression can get a tool from too dull to work to as sharp as one could ever need in about 2 minutes and the investment in the stones is well worth it because the stones will last at least one lifetime.
