You can nit pick all day about "the world's Largest Airplane" If you feel really strongly about it, put it in the comment section.
This Antonov An-225 Mriya Landed at the Oakland international airport (runway 30) on September 9th 2018 at about 4:30 PM
I believe the aircraft was hired by the US Government (FEMA) to pick up relief supplies in Hawaii and deliver them to Guam for the Super Typhoon Mangkhut relief effort. It stopped in Oakland California for fuel on its flight from its base in Kiev.
The Antonov An-225 Mriya (Ukrainian: Антонов Ан-225 Мрія, lit. 'dream' or 'inspiration', NATO reporting name: "Cossack") is a strategic airlift cargo aircraft that was designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union during the 1980s. It is powered by six turbofan engines and is the heaviest aircraft ever built, with a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes (710 short tons; 630 long tons). It also has the largest wingspan of any aircraft in operational service. The single example built has the Ukrainian civil registration UR-82060. A second airframe with a slightly different configuration was partially built. Its construction was halted in 1994 because of lack of funding and interest, but revived briefly in 2009, bringing it to 60-70% completion] On 30 August 2016, Antonov agreed to complete the second airframe for Aerospace Industry Corporation of China (not to be confused with the Aviation Industry Corporation of China) as a prelude to AICC commencing series production.
The Antonov An-225, initially developed for the task of transporting the Buran spaceplane, was an enlargement of the successful Antonov An-124. The first and only An-225 was completed in 1988. After successfully fulfilling its Soviet military missions, it was mothballed for eight years. It was then refurbished and re-introduced, and is in commercial operation with Antonov Airlines carrying oversized payloads. The airlifter holds the absolute world records for an airlifted single-item payload of 189,980 kilograms (418,830 pounds)] and an airlifted total payload of 253,820 kg (559,580 lb). It has also transported a payload of 247,000 kg (545,000 lb) on a commercial flight.

@@veeglover - in the documentary I saw they transported a fuselage to the U.S. there was no hanger large enough for them to pull to, so the unloading was coordinated at the end of an empty runway. It was cold and icy where they landed - seems like it was Chicago, not positive. Very interesting plane! The crew walked around the entire plane inspecting for any broken parts. They do an inspection every time they land. Every. Time.

I am 91 now a retired TWA capt. I got your email thank you. I never thought I would live this long to see such a remarkable machine. I flew the 747 in 1969 then my true love the Tri-star. At that time in 73 when she rolled in to service I thought I would never see a plane as sophisticated as the Tri Jet. Is it my imagination or am I hearing a buzz saw aft lab noise that could be heard with her center mounted duct air inlet that she had embedded in the tail ? my hearing is not that good and it may be a auditory hallucination to me. I here that sound with this plane.

I turned 91 and The Tri Star was my girl. She and I went places you could not get to. I started my career with TWA in 1958 and had a life time of memories with the Tri Jet as she flew her self and me when I napped. In 1991 I was forced in to retirement and wanted to stay with her so I engineered her and let in 93. I had a life time of memories with my wife who passed away and my kids and grand kids. I was a lucky man. I lived for her. The 747 I flew from 1969 to 1975 took me all over but I fell in love with the Lockheed legend and I was forced into retirement and took the engineer spot on the 1011 in 92 , it was not the same. I still take trips American is nice to let me on, I can still fly as a PAX all though my doctor told me to slow down. I lost Rita she passed away on me in 2003 - Flying on a 74 and Tri Star also brings me close to her but they do not operate any longer. I take rides out to the AC grave yard to spend time with the the love I lost a while back,as so be it - the planes sit dismantled and I sit and keep her company hoping for one more run in the left seat.

Oh, Drat!! Had I known, I might have made the 3 1/2 hour drive to see "Mriya," in Oakland, the one -of-a kind Antonov AN-225, literally resurrected from a weedpatch, and not only the biggest real airplane ever, but one of the most beautiful. Great video!

@TiernanWilkinson
@TiernanWilkinson 5 жыл бұрын
Phil S I saw the C5 as well, awesome aircraft and only second in size after the Antonov. Both fail to surpass the Spruce Goose's enormous wingspan, but outclass it in general size and capacity. If successful, the vast Stratolaunch will surpass both by a considerable margin, but until it does the AN225 is the largest object currently in flight, the largest to take to the skies since the days of the Zeppelin.
