The 1993 FIBO trade show in Cologne, Germany, was the location of one of the most intriguing yet underreported contests in the history of bodybuilding. It featured IFBB bodybuilder Tom Platz, facing off against powerlifting legend Dr. Fred Hatfield in a squat competition that would be informally dubbed “The Great American Squat-Off.” Tom went on to win with 23 reps at 525 pounds.
Today, we're going to see if I can set a new record.

@@thechumpsbeendumped.7797 The bar positioning, one is across the upper traps (high bar) and the other is across the rear delts, on top of the scapula ridge, one is more quad dominant and the other incorporates a bit more hip extensors, ie more glutes (because it tilts your torso over more) generally most people can squat more weight with a low bar position assuming they aren't new to it.

It is insane to just casually load 525 and squat it for 24 reps, 3 weeks into squatting again. Well done Moose! Joe Sullivan and Jake Benson trained specifically for the Tom Platz Squat Challenge and got 20 and 17 reps respectively iirc but to do it casually is a whole new level. Additionally Matt Wenning did 520lbs, so you have him beat. Also notably David Ricks (IPF powerlifter) squatted 525lbs for 8 at the age of 62 which I think is really cool

This was truly an awesome achievement. I’m not trying to diminish it in any way, but consider that Tom Platz weighed probably 75-100 lbs less than Mitchell when he performed this feat. Brian Shaw, Big Z, Martins and JF Caron all did 13 reps in the same comp. I'm sure all these athletes can do what Mitch did today. Strongman as a sport has a lot of events where they have to rep out squats and deadlifts so it stands to reason that they would be good at it. What we just witnessed is an absurd level of strength and ive shared the video with several friends, but I wouldn't call that a narrow stance OR that low of squat depth; several wouldve been questionable as far as powerlifting standards call for. I would not nitpick this at all if it weren't for having seen this comment, lol.

Respect for squatting 525. Let’s focus on the depth. Tom Platz squatted hams touching calves on every rep. Major difference in a full squat and a powerlifting depth squat. Not taking anything away from your feat! Impressive. Comparing it to another’s feat without recognizing the depth….misses a BIG factor.

Very impressive. Both Mitchell Hooper and Matt Wenning are ridiculously strong. That being said, their depths are not the same as Platz. Who did it high bar, not low bar as stated. Again, this guy is the worlds strongest man winner, a beast! But, there is no comparison between these squats and an Olympic ATG squat. They're just not the same, that's all. IMHO Of course Tom Platz is a lot shorter, so he had a definite leverage advantage. Just some observations, all the these lifts are incredible.

Incredible work Mitch! I feel like ranting. The most impressive squat I have ever seen was Big Z doing 329kg for 15 reps on the WSM axle bar. Hooper casually did 235kg for 24 reps Broscience time: In a 1rm calculator, Z's comes to 493.5 kg. This feels about right for peak Z. In a 1rm calculator, Hooper's comes to 429 kg. (probably below Mitch's peak squat) If we reverse the calculations, Z's 493kg squat should be equivalent to... something north of 30+ reps. the calculators online don't go that far up and probably aren't accurate after 10reps. In conclusion, younger Big Z would eat this record for breakfast. P.S: 2 years ago, Z did 320kg for 12 reps in the gym. which comes to about 448kg 1rm. Perhaps he could still beat it if his knees allow. It could be a fun collaboration to see if either of you can break it.
