Todays video will be discussing the little known story of an unlicensed surgeon in california named John Ronald Brown who performed hundreds of illegal black market transsexual surgeries and mutilated hundreds of marginalized transgender people in the process.
It also explores the circumstances and social attitudes which led to this surgeon going mostly undetected for almost three decades.
Historically transgender individuals have been very vulnerable in society due to the prejudice, this video explores some of the ways that happened while also telling the chilling story of a rogue surgeon.

It hurts me that someone would take advantage of vulnerable people like this. He likely knew that his patients wouldn’t be able to hold him legally accountable for fear of outing themselves as Trans and he took advantage of them. Makes me physically sick that someone like this was ever allowed to practice medicine.

It’s equally disturbing that for some time the community he was actively playing “Operator” w/ saw him as a renegade doctor rebelling against the main stream medical orthodoxy. At the same time I have seen that type of anti-hero status given to people in other areas of life (i.e. Dr. Kavorkian, Jon Dillinger, Bonnie & Clyde etc) who are behaving in violent and criminal ways so it seems to be a somewhat common phenomena.

He definitely isn't unique. A few years ago I had to have spine surgery so I was doing a lot of research on the subject. Apparently there was a neurosurgeon in Texas named Christopher Daniel Duntsch. His story for one is incredibly fascinating. But he was taking patients with serious spinal issues and making them worse. Took a few years for him to get caught, but man he was butchering people. Kind of scary that people like this can end up in medical professions where often times they get away with it for quite some time.

“The SCALPELS were so BLUNT that dr. Brown had to put immense pressure back and forth to cut the skin” - I had to pause the video this legit made my stomach hurt. It’s crazy to me how people can be so trusting of someone just because DR. In front of their name. I’ve worked with a few Drs and especially here in the US the majority have a god like complex or incredibly arrogant which is terrifying. This dr just seemed pure insane and evil. No concern for those people who looked to him for help when they had no other options. So sick.

Same, I was in the hospital post-gallbladder surgery and I was in agony the whole time. They flat out refused to give me adequate pain relief. I was literally scream crying 24/7 and they just said "sorry, we're giving you all the medicine we can". I had a few hours in that hospital where I wasn't in terrible pain, before the surgery when I initially came to the er they gave me an injection of Dilaudid. Which to be fair may have been a bit more than needed (I admit I got a little rush when it first went in but it was far from overdose territory, I was completely awake and alert). But it did get me out of pain, I asked for it after the surgery but they said they could only give that in the er. At first after the surgery they were just giving me Tordal (which is an NSAID, so basically just extra extra strength Ibuprofen), they did relent to giving me morphine but that didn't touch the pain either (at least not in the amount they were giving me), and even at that they were pushing me to get off the pain medicine and let them discharge me. Even though it hurt so much to breathe that my oxygen levels dropped to where they hooked me up to an oxygen machine, which wouldn't have been necessary if they had just treated the pain enough.

It reminds me of when I had my first rhinoplasry. I went under the knife back in 2017, for purely aesthetic reasons and to fix a minor breathing issue. It was okay for a while, and then my nose started to shift. One nostril went far up, and I couldn't breathe at all. There was a sharp pain on the left side of my nose bridge, up to my eye when I touched it, so I finally went to a doctor when I lived in Korea. This was 5 years after. I got a scan of my skull, for free, and they showed me the results. I did not have a nose bone anymore, there was some unknown tissue in my nose, which they couldn't identify even after they removed it. They also had to inform me that not undergoing surgery again would very likely kill me, since an infection of my tissue had started spreading towards my eyes and brain. So of course I decided to undergo surgery a second time. And it honestly was the best thing I could have ever done. After my first visit it was scheduled 4 weeks after, due to my uni schedule. During that time some rotten smelling fluid started leaking from my nose and the stench of rotten flesh did not go away until after surgery, my nose also got so red, hot and swollen that I was scared it would burst. The second surgery went super well, it's been around 5 months now and I can finally breathe again! My nose turned out super pretty, but I'm mainly happy to not be in pain anymore. The scariest thing about the story though was that my original surgeon had a very good reputation, was in a very well known hospital and was actually recommended to me by the chamber of doctors. (A German thing I suppose). Later he got his license renounced because he disfigured many, many women. One even died after she had a liposuction done by him. He was sued, and me and my family plan on sueing him too. It was very scary to go through something like that, and I hope all the other victims are able to find some peace in their life. The doctors name, if anyone is interested is Sebastian Voigt, he was a German plastic surgeon, and here in Germany he was on the news a while back. It should also be noted that during the time of my first surgery I was 15 years old, which means not only did he willingly risk someone's life, he willingly risked the life of a child.

Cases of medical malpractice like this always give me the creeps. It's also incredibly sad how those people were driven to the point of desperation where they went to a shady "clinic" like this just so they could get the procedure they needed, but then they wake up and realize that this doctor just straight up mutilated their body. That would be my worst nightmare. Reminds me of the story of that sketchy back alley abortion clinic.

@@rudemaminsynek5925 I love Burroughs as a writer, but when it came to medicine, he didn't really know his ass from a talking hole in the ground. Sorry, no disrespect to the man but it's true. He knew a lot about opioids from personal experience, but when it came to brain chemistry, he knew a lot less than neurologists at the time, who already didn't have a lot to go on. It's also noteworthy that at the time he was touting apomorphine, he was trying to convince everyone he was clean when he was in fact, not. So its possible (we'll never know for sure) that he was just using it as an explanation for why he was seemingly doing so well off the junk.

How is no one talking about the amount of effort put into the cut scenes in this video? The "awake in surgery" at the 20:12 mark feels like a legitimate cut scene out of a horror video game. The props. The voice overs. The accent in the opening interview. The music. The POV placement of the anesthesia mask like some sort of anti-ASMR pov video. The dramatic swig of whiskey. The mood-lighting. The WIG. His wig snatched MINE. He put so much theatricality into these scenes, and I seriously appreciate the extra effort and KZfaq artistry so much... I was listening to this while I was doing uni hw, at first I thought it was an actual audio recording of the surgeon when the surgical promo began. My eyebrows climbed all the way up and I had to do a double take and switch back to the KZfaq tab just to see the visuals and realize that it was not in fact the true-to-life ad put into the documentary. The topic is obviously really dark and morose, but the cut scenes don't detract from the horrors of these crimes OR make light of them, which is a really hard balance to strike. This was handled so epically. I subbed two videos ago, but I turned on my bell notifs after going back into the channel and finding this gem.

Hey Lee, great video! I enjoyed it for the most part evan though it was kinda hard to sit through given all the scary and gross things he did to those people. That fearful feeling of disqust was cemented even more in me via those interludes, but it was definitely worth it to hear the story and if you meant to disqust and scare the viewer you did a great job!

@@PeakedInterest You definitely did a great job at that. It was chilling to be honest and I'm sure not far off from the reality of the situation. That's one thing I love about ur videos that sets u apart from other "real crime" type mystery channels. Your video skills and skits add a very human aspect that is missing from other creators just talking about their research into the camera. And the reason I said u would get hell is just because it's a sensitive topic that is hard to talk about without pissing SOMEONE off. Lol. I think a lot of the case's points carry over into the way trans people are treated today. It honestly feels like science has abandoned truly helping these people and are putting them on a conveyor belt that isn't good for anyone. I am glad that SOME people can more easily get the help they need but the conveyor belt moves so quickly that many are not treated properly. This was just a very extreme case of a horrible person. I am NO expert by any means, this is just such a complicated issue these days. Keep up the good work. As always, I am looking forward to ur next project.

I'm following now. I did have that worry when I picked this story, that some of the more....conservative viewers might take offence and send me hate. Then I realised, the story and the issue is more important than whatever small negative impact it has for me, also it's no real loss if those people unsubscribe. Some other true crime/mystery channels seem to just cover what will get clicks but I decided if I can I want to say something about the state of society with the stories I tell. I won't always be able to do it but it is always my aim.

Absolutely fantastic video! I love your thoroughness. Just a few points I'd like to mention... With regards apotenophilia, or body integrity dysphoria, it comes as a great surprise to me that John Money was one of the first to describe the condition. I first heard about this condition on an episode of the National Geographic Channel's documentary series, "Taboo". That episode featured a man who had successfully got doctors to amputate his leg after inducing necrosis in the leg by placing it in a bucket of dry ice for hours. The impression I got of the syndrome is that it's not so much the desire to live as an amputee, but rather the experience of the undesired body part as something alien and repulsive - an ever-present feeling that it should not be a part of oneself. The individual in the documentary reported being very much happier and satisfied with his life after losing the leg that since childhood he has suffered through feeling like it was something alien on his body. I don't know if this was Money's understanding of the syndrome, but I'm sure you know that Money is another highly controversial figure - his forced gender reassignment of David Reimer as a child, after he was a victim of a botched circumcision that destroyed his penis, is now generally believed to have resulted in Reimer's death by suicide, as well as the suicide of his brother. With regards the Krazy Glue - this may not have been as (no pun intended) crazy as it sounds - some studies have shown that similar cyanoacrylate glues can indeed be successfully used to seal medical incisions, and in some cases may in fact be preferential to sutures. I once watched a documentary which suggested that in a post-apocalyptic situation, it might be feasible, in the absence of other options, and no possibility of medical help, to seal wounds with superglue. Of course, this is NOT something you would want to try in normal life!!!!
@PeakedInterest
@PeakedInterest 2 жыл бұрын
I agree to an extent on apotnophilia though were essentially saying the same thing in different terms. I maybe mischaracterised it a little by describing it as a Desire to live as an amputee (as though they're festishizing the condition) when really the desire is to remove the body part though the outcome is the same in both cases. Also agree on John money is he is very...difficult character which is why I tried not to mention him too much but he is there in the genesis of the term (even if the condition was described slightly sooner) With regard to crazy glue it isn't really that crazy for superficial lacerations (army medics sometimes use it) but you wouldn't use it for invasive surgery at all as it carries too many infection risks. They do use a type of glue in surgery (seem this first hand) but it's a glue that's comprised of plasma and other elements of your own body fluids then it can both be absorbed and the risk of infection is much lower.

Well you have to remember that originally people wanting sex change were considered mentally ill, as we're gay people it's only with the advance of society and a better understanding of psychology that conditions became more widely accepted and more understood. Anyone can cut off whatever they want, but a society can only drag along so many people who contribute nothing. How many of them end up being productive members of society who pay taxes and keep medicare funds up? Enabling people to form a new caste of victims who have to be taken care of and pandered to 24/7 spells disaster, that's basically my only issue. You're self sufficient? In intestinal Vaginoplasty, an intestinal segment will be used to create a Vagina. Bowel segment vaginoplasty can be performed in transgender women for different reasons: Insufficient penoscrotal skin or when penile or penoscrotal inversion technique has failed.

@@We_Are_All_Vultures I genuinely appreciate the info. Somehow, I don't think these reasons were the impetus bc behind this surgeon's actions, though.

I really like the acting scenes throughout this video. It's a really unique way of telling this story. And it helps you feel even more empathy to his victims, because you're seeing through their eyes. Not sure if you're gonna keep doing acting scenes like this in other videos, but I really like it (well, I mean, it's horrifying, the real details of what happened, but you know what I mean, it's just a really good way to tell this story)

@@PeakedInterest Oh no worries, you crafted a really well made and unsettling documentary. It takes a lot to genuinely frighten me. I should be more careful about what I listen to at night anyway haha. Losing a limb seems to be deep rooted fear of mine for whatever reason, it's one of the most recurring themes in bad dreams I have. Makes it all the more shocking to me that there are people who have a deep rooted compulsion to seek it out.

As a trans person with a fear of medical things this was super hard to watch, but I had to because of how well you made it and how morbidly interesting this was. It's infuriating to hear about this man taking advantage of such vulnerable people. Can't even understand why. Was it just the money? Some sort of sick satisfaction? Probably both. Thank you for this video and all the care you put into it! It's super well made, and anytime I see such clear support for us it makes me incredibly happy. It's exhausting to see all of the hatred trans people get, so thank you for showing your support. Apologies if this is all jumbled, it's very late, but I wanted to say what I was thinking. Thank you for this video

Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave such a well considered comment. I try to find stories which not only are interesting but also say something about an aspect of society. I'd like to cover more trans and LGBTQ stories in future.

I've seen a documentary about John Brown, but this was much worse than I remembered. I've had the reassignment surgery, it took years of psychologists and hormones before going under the knife. And even then the overall care was extensive (Finnish health care system is one of the world's best). Scary to think that had I lived in 1970s perhaps I would have been desperate enough to seek that butcher, especially in my stupid 20s. Glad he was caught. Good video by the way. Well researched and respectful for the victims despite satisfying a morbid curiosity.

I can understand that, the story is a tough one for someone in your position and there are also some first perspective surgery sections to illustrate the ordeal too, that could be difficult for you. Video aside if you ever need to talk about stuff my twitter and insta DM are always open, I know there isn't much I can offer in the way of advice being a cis person but I can definitely listen.

You're very welcome, if people talked and listened more we'd all fight less. Part of my aim here is to use stories as a vehicle to change perspective on things, people and issues..last video was racial issues and justice this time round it was trans issues. I find if you hide the message behind a story it tends to resonate more with those that normally remain ignorant.
