During the search for the missing law student Lauren Giddings her friend and classmate Stephen McDaniel gave an on air interview for local news which immediately drew suspicion upon him. Police began to suspect a murder had taken place...
Later when McDaniel was questioned by police his interrogation was one of the most bizarre in history. This is the case of the murder of Lauren Gidding by Stephen McDaniel.

Implying people like this were not in control of their own faculties when they did whatever they did, is to provide excuses for them, in a way. There are people just as mentally ill as Stephen that have the opportunity to harm people just like he did, and they never end up doing it. The difference between them is one of them CHOSE to harm people, and the others chose NOT to.

My city..I watched this unfold over the weekend. You do not know HOW LUCKY the police were that morning. Her friends had been searching for her all weekend. The police arrived early that morning and parked in front of the garbage cans by the street...not 10 minutes later the garbage truck pulled up but couldn't get to the trash so it pulled around and went to the next house. On the way back to his car the cop smelled something and looked in the trash and found the body. Steven thought the trash had been picked up when he gave his interview....that is the shock you see...

Seen from Stephen's perspective, that's such a fucking bummer. He even timed the murder so the dump truck would get the remains the following day 🤦.

there was a similar case in boston in 1996 when a homeless man discovered an upper half body(which had been cut in half) in the trash near fenway park. but there was no connection to anyone that night, she was a swedish nanny who was partying at night in downtown boston and then disappeared that night. the murder is unsolved to this day.

So part of his act is him trying to act insane. He actually filed an appeal on this in 2018 alledging he wasn't defended properly due to being "mentally unsound" at the time, this was thrown out. And then in 2020 he filed a habeas corpus appeal which again was denied. Now in May 2022 he's filed Yet Another Appeal!! I hope when he has his probation hearing in 2041 these appeals show up as proof that he just will not accept responsibility and therefor has not reformed & should not be allowed back out into society.

@@mikesully110 The guy obviously has a superficial understanding of the law. In reality, insanity pleas aren't any better than traditional murder convictions. In fact, it could be argued they are far worse. You're institutionalized for life with no one but nurse ratchet to strap you down to your bed all day. For anyone who is sane within their cognitive abilities they would probably prefer the death penalty. It just goes to show you why a lot of third rate lawyers coming out of the wood work end up working at Kinkos, which would have probably been Stephen's true career.

I have a case suggestion: Claudia Aparecida Lopes - bizarre case in wchih woman goes to hospital for c-section, and when doctors open her, they realize that she was never pregnant. It seems like phantom pregnancy, but she had two scans before, that showed that she was indeed with a baby. The second one showed that it was in a breech position, what was the reason for c-section in the first place. Theories are: She, her husband and medical staff all had Folie à deux. The baby was killed due to error, and staff cover it up. The baby was stolen by the staff. That's one weird case. I would be glad if you'd analise it from top to bottom. Just an idea.

I've heard about this case in the past and I was always confused as to how they knew he was being suspicious as when I look at his reaction, to me, he seemed shocked and upset about the possibility of the body of a classmate and friend being found. I appreciate the dissection of his reaction and the explanation as to why it alerted authorities. As always very informative and always enjoy the effort! The Fire place in a study/library was great tho I think between Campfire and Study Fire place, Campfire is best fire 😁 (either way it's still a nice touch!)

His reaction looks like shock that the body was found and it also looks like panic that he may get caught. It doesn't look like someone who is sad that a friend was found dead. Also, when he sits down, he turns away with his back towards the camera. I would think a person who has just heard that a body was found that is likely a friend would want some comfort and not turn away.

It's kind of strange how these psychos end up in the very positions they could harm people in. The police, nurses, doctors, lawyers, psychologists. Of course not all of them obviously. I respect most people in those professions, but look at the Moscow Idaho case. Seems they're pretty lax on their screening methods.

Wonderful video as usual, I saw a lot of JCS' influence which was GREAT (he's a favorite too). I liked the breakdown of Stephen's body language on camera. I do wonder if Stephen had been able to set aside his ego and have a lawyer present, how the case might have turned out. Maybe exactly the same. Maybe worse. Maybe he wouldn't have seen jail at all. But the self control in the interrogation room was INCREDIBLE to watch. Innocent men don't have that level of self control when they're having the screws put to them. Not to mention, knowing which question was meant to be incriminating and which one wasn't. Those are usually VERY unclear. Thank you for covering this hell of a case.

Using such techniques on someone in an interrogation is pretty fucking risky. They may just as well recieve a confession from an innocent person. Sleep and food deprivation, that's some stasi type shit, and all they had at that point was that he acted strangely on TV when given the news they found her body.

I one time got interrogated for a stabbing because someone had used same style pants as I did. as a nervous person I was a nervous wreck at the interrogation, all shaking and could barely talk. I was so sure they thought I was guilty but the one who did it had criminal background with drugs and violence. Interrogations are scary, they really push the questions with more questions questioning if you're sure about your answer once you answer one. I "knew" the guy, used to be on a different class back in elementary school

it was found on internet forums that he had stated if he ever killed someone he would fake being in a disassociated state and therefore avoid jail due to insanity. if there was ever a case for beating a confession out of someone....and I'm not joking. You can't maintain an act when you are getting beaten. Obviously, you can't do this because police would abuse their authority, but in this one situation, I think it's obvious it would work.
